AIBU to tell you that I’ve known many people who gone onto to become famous (lighthearted)?

Just musing about the number of people Ive known that have gone on to become famous and wondered if others have experienced this?

I was very friendly with a girl that became a very well known page 3 girl.

I had a retail Saturday job when I was at school and the owners son (who I flirted with) has become a household name actor.

A manager I had in one of my first jobs became a successful sit com writer

I have a distant cousin who has written a lot of celebrity biographies.

One of my children’s friends is now a well known footballer

Someone in the village where I live is now on the telly giving lifestyle advice

Obviously their fame is nothing to do with knowing me 😆 but I’m not sure if it’s common to know so many random famous people without being in the same industry/circles as them ?

I will add that most of these I’ve lost touch with over the years.

My DH 😁 obviously not going to say who he is or what he does but he’s been in the public eye for many many years and travelled the world

ajandjjmum · 04/06/2026 16:13

How boring! Names or there's no point reading!!! Grin

RaraRachael · 04/06/2026 16:24

Nope. Never known anyone who became remotely famous

MesonBoson · 04/06/2026 16:49

I am Michael Caine's grandma and Prince Harrys' sister.

And I live next door to Una Stubbs

Saturdayisthebestday · 04/06/2026 16:57

These posts are always so pointless if no one names the celebs.

dinosaurjigsaw · 04/06/2026 17:06

I suppose the reason I’m posting is not to stealth boast over who I know but to ask if it’s at all usual to know so “many” different famous people from many walks of life without being in any of their industries. It really is just random.

I’ve remembered another one, a bit more tenuous, but someone I know well once dated a pop star, for quite a long time.

My first fiance became famous while we were together.

I guess it depends where you live too, I spent my teens in North London, so it wasn’t unusual for a gym friend etc to also be an aspiring actor, singer etc.

NinjaTurtle7 · 04/06/2026 17:11

I went to school with Alexandra Burke and Drama school with Belinda Owusu! That’s my claim to fame 😁

B1anche · 04/06/2026 17:16

Literally none ☹️. Met a few through work but no-one I would describe as a friend, and none of my school friends have become famous (except for a couple porn stars if you count that).

FeliciaFancybottom · 04/06/2026 17:19

You're obviously the fame version of good luck Chuck.

MrsMoastyToasty · 04/06/2026 17:20

Most of the "famous" people i know/knew in the past are/were eminent in their field of expertise rather than TV/film famous.
For example I was a classmate 40 years ago with someone who became a double Olympian, but unless you know which sport and its history you probably wouldn't have heard of them.

Lomonald · 04/06/2026 17:26

I went to secondary school and in most classes h a now retired Scottish footballer, he comes up on people you may know on Facebook! My cousins Dc has been in a music video in the early 00s. I know all the greats 😀

devongirl12 · 04/06/2026 18:44

Do you live in London?

ThesophisticatedJY · 04/06/2026 18:50

I went to school with Dexter Fletcher , he was in Bugsy Malone and I remember him taking time off to film it .

Newsenmum · 04/06/2026 18:52

These posts are only interesting when you find out names

TeddyWllowAndStorm · 04/06/2026 18:55

My friend from childhood plays guitar with a famous singer.

Another friend is a fairly well known author. I didn’t meet her until we were both adults and she became successful later on.

I went to school with someone who became ‘known’ due to an incident. He did something stupid at a televised event which got attention. Not sure that counts and he is a total dickhead. 😅

Isn't he a director now? I remember him in press gang had a huge crush 😍

My brother's best friend was Marti Pellow of WetWetWet fame. He was such a gorgeous man and so funny and cool. I was very popular at high school as people knew he was a family friend.

I’m similar op, I don’t think it’s that uncommon, for me it’s friends of friends mostly and I’ve dated an actor (before I met dh) who was the opposite, once famous no longer other than panel shows occasionally and panto. Dh on the other hand knows many more people in the public eye due to the school he attended, one of the famous ones, not in touch of course but they are properly influential businessmen, arts management, politics, civil servants - at the old boys day many came and was really weird for me, comprehensive educated, as I wouldn’t attend an event at my old school, hated it.
