AIBU to tell you that I’ve known many people who gone onto to become famous (lighthearted)?

Just musing about the number of people Ive known that have gone on to become famous and wondered if others have experienced this?

I was very friendly with a girl that became a very well known page 3 girl.

I had a retail Saturday job when I was at school and the owners son (who I flirted with) has become a household name actor.

A manager I had in one of my first jobs became a successful sit com writer

I have a distant cousin who has written a lot of celebrity biographies.

One of my children’s friends is now a well known footballer

Someone in the village where I live is now on the telly giving lifestyle advice

Obviously their fame is nothing to do with knowing me 😆 but I’m not sure if it’s common to know so many random famous people without being in the same industry/circles as them ?

I will add that most of these I’ve lost touch with over the years.

My dad shared a house with David' Attenborough. My mother said he was a dull little man (David not my dad!)

TheChosenTwo · 04/06/2026 19:35

I don’t know anyone that’s ended up being famous. What dull circles I move in 😭😤

I suppose the reason I’m posting is not to stealth boast over who I know but to ask if it’s at all usual to know so “many” different famous people from many walks of life without being in any of their industries. It really is just random.

I’ve remembered another one, a bit more tenuous, but someone I know well once dated a pop star, for quite a long time.

I think it depends where you live! Everyone I know who grew up in London knew a fair few more famous people than me, who grew up in the middle of nowhere

I once escorted a pleasant man to our company hospitality tent. I knew he was vaguely affiliated with the event we were schmoozing clients at, something senior in the organising committee I thought.

Lovely chap, very friendly, I had a few minutes on the walk to ask if he'd been involved in the sport long, did he participate in it, how did he like the event etc. He was perfectly amiable and chatty, said he was "quite good" and all that.

When throngs of people threw themself at him on arrival, I finally thought to ask someone who he was. He was one of the top people in his field and had won Olympic and World medals. Nice chap.

Lived next door to an actor
Worked with someone who went on to be very high profile in politics.

I know loads of people through work, but the only time I’ve been impressed was a boy from school who went on to become a drivetime radio DJ, which obviously carries a middling public profile.

He was the quietest, nicest kid in the class, but his show was in a different part of the country so I’ve never been able to check it out for myself and find out whether he’d acquired a David ‘Kid’ Jensen accent or anything.

Yes, me too. Also in London. It is actually starting to grate. Like everyone is getting famous or an award except for me! I think I need a career change and start writing or something, I do have plenty of quirky ideas.

Araminta1003 · 04/06/2026 19:59

The other group is all these techies becoming multi millionaires overnight.

LOCOJDS · 04/06/2026 20:16

When i was 14/15/16 I hung around with a group of lads and girls, Craig Charles was one of them, haven't seen him since 16 though.......thats it.

My best friend toured with the band Puddle of Mudd and had an affair with the Grammy-winning guitarist Victor Wooten. She also went to school with the founder of Hello Fresh.

My daughter went to school with the footballer Ethan Nwaneri.

That's as close as I got 😂

Now that's a real claim to fame - what a shame your Mum couldn't come up with some better stories! Grin

I know! And the mad woman didn't even mention this until about 2 years before she died! The kids and I were just 'er.....what?' 'Well, he was! Quiet and dull'. We could get no more from her Confused

I am 60 and I think he is too . He lived near Broomfield Park .

I lived on the road where his primary school was. My friend went to secondary school with him in Muswell Hill.

Spidey66 · 06/06/2026 13:47

Oh as well as my famous classmate (Tamsin Greig, if you’re interested) David Baddiel grew up down the road from us. I remember the family vaguely but not him in particular.

Tcateh · 06/06/2026 13:48

Barrymore has moved to our town and it's f ing annoying.
A very small town and you can't avoid him 😂

Staffygirl · 06/06/2026 14:05

My friend attended a secondary school in Teignmouth and was class mates with someone called Matt Bellamy, who later became famous as the lead singer in Muse.

I went to a Grammar school in Devon, our headteacher was Mr Parsons and his son Andy was also at this school, a couple years above me. Andy later became a well known TV comedian and writer.
