Why so much hate for Landlords on MN?

Who do LL's get so much hate on MN?

It seems so much more hate than there is any real life.

Maybe David Attenborough?

😆 🤣 this thread reminds me of the scene in Dr Zchivago where rich people's houses were taken over by commies.

If a property is on the market who does it cost more to buy it?

  1. A Landlord
  2. Somebody who wants to live in it?

It costs the LL more as they have to put down a minimum of 25 percent deposit.

Hedgehogs?

Unless you're a slug, of course.

Nope. There was a thread on him - I was surprised to see some hate there too.

OMG, is nothing sacred!

Gosh, I hope he's never rented out a property. He did use to travel a lot...

StandingDeskDisco · Today 11:58

UniDaysAcoming · Today 11:53

All the hate seems to be towards the individual landlords not the institutional LLs. (Is it Lloyds who is now the biggest landlord? No mortgage issues there!) I doubt that they are better than the individual landlords. It's not LL Vs council - it is really individual LL Vs institutional LL Vs council/social housing.

I don't get the 'morally wrong' thing either - is Tesco also morally wrong for making a profit from food - an even more basic necessity?

Food is not economically scarce, and there is huge competition in the market.
If Tesco were making profits in a situation of scarcity, such as war-time rationing, that would be wrong.

Housing is scarce.

Landlords hate hedgehogs then 😝

Do you agree with anybody making money at all?

I have no problem with people working to make money.

You don't sound a very competent business person if I am being honest.

Just as well I don't see it as a business then.

How dare you. Sir Dave would never.

The private units they have in many of the large hospitals absolutely do. And in some specialities (not all) there are lucrative private practice opportunities.

I don't agree with that either.

So why not become a home owner so you don't have to give "morally wrong" people your money?

Just become a home owner. Of course! Why did they not think of that? It's so obvious when you put it that way.

They are so generous with their wisdom

Why don't they... Just get a job? Then they wouldn't have to get other people to earn their money for them.

If it's not so easy, why are you shying away from telling us what's so hard about it?
All you've offered is "it's earned, it's not easy, but I can't tell you why"

Of course it's easy. And it's not earned.
The only people earning are the tenants.

I have explained in a previous post all the work we do.

Landlords need to buy insurance, safety checks and certificates, maintain heating and water supplies, pay mortgage or other fees, advertise rental, legally contract, arrange check in/check out etc etc

A lot can be outsourced to letting/management agents but at a cost, not all can be. landlords don’t sit idle - there is work

edited to add that there is more work when a tenancy goes wrong, such as non payment of rent, damage caused, both happen.

Why do you think landlords don't have jobs? Genuine question.

No you haven't. You said there was no point telling anyone because they wouldn't believe you.

I have, but I will copy and paste for your beneift.

I disagree being a LL is unearned income. I suppose if it's fully managed there is an argument it is.
But what both myself and my husband do.

  1. Make sure gas and electric certificates are up to date.
  2. Carry out minor repairs.
  3. Book and instruct tradespeople.
  4. Attend AGM's and quite often sit on the board.
  5. Deal with debt enforcement agencies.
  6. Transport furniture from one property to another dependent on tenant's requests.
That's not unearned.

Fair enough, but it is reality.

Yes I’m serious. Idealistic but serious 😎

Your ridiculous views are dangerous. The UK is already on the verge of bankruptcy thanks to RR and her astronomical borrowing. The answer would be for social housing to charge a bit more so that they could use the profit to build more houses but they can't because they are not for profit. So we are left with some people getting massively subsided housing and others paying full market rents.

So do you understand why private landlords are hating for over charging ie charging market rent, as much as they can, not reflecting the cost of supplying the product.

Oh you don’t understand supply and demand 🫣 it has nothing to do with how much someone pays to supply, and everything to do with how much a person is willing to pay.

The rental market is fair, one of the fairest markets there can be, because ultimately there is no one supplier who can control it, people have a choice. You pay what you are willing to pay, and that determines where you get to live.

Also, I’m not a landlord really…but I do have a second property that I rent to my in-laws at cost. It wipes its face on income vs expenditure, and I’ve only raised rent once in 12 (I think) years. They get housing that is about 2/3 of market rate (115 a week) and I get my mortgage paid so I have an asset and my net worth increases. More people should do this for family.
