Does anybody else dislike Pride?

We have one in our town for the second year running, and it's just really off.

Now before I get the "don't be homophobic comments" I am very much live and let live.

It's just that it can be very adult in the middle of the day.

How can anyone dislike pride? Such a strange thing to dislike. Not for you? Don't go, very very simple.

Hasn't a pride festival somewhere just been cancelled because of aggression? A twat or two ruining it for the rest seems to be the way in the UK.

Naive. Shockingly naive.

WhatNoRaisins · Today 13:38

I think they vary a lot. I've seen both good and bad atmospheres at different ones depending on how they were managed. I do agree that they aren't always family friendly too.

Pootles34 · Today 13:37

Meh, one or two that may raise an eyebrow but not much different to the stag and hen parties we get running around town with inflatable willies in the middle of the day.

Also naive.

Patronising. Shockingly patronising.

I love it! Great festival atmosphere, nothing more adult then any other carnival event if you're talking about costumes? Our local one is really family friendly. Lots of facepainting and story time stuff too. Colourful and wonderful and I know it helps alot of people. Xx

Naive. I despair.

scatterolight · Today 13:39

I love how mumsnet itself has put a "sensitive content" warning on my images so you have to click to view them. Yet these are the things on show in your local town Pride parade while you're doing your shopping with your kids.

Kind of proves the point.

xino · Today 13:40

It seems a total anachronism to me. It’s a bit like having a parade to campaign against children having to go up chimneys. We’ve moved on, surely?

CalmTheFuckDownMargaret · Today 13:40

Happyjoe · Today 13:38

Patronising. Shockingly patronising.

It would only be patronising if I was replying to a poster who knew what they were talking about and treating them as if they didn’t know.

The post was the very definition of naive.

Our local pride has definitely changed over the years. I used to take DC when they were small, live music, maybe a drag queen. That was about it.

Now it's all about trans, misogynistic "comedy", last year they had a kid up on stage as it was her birthday. The stall next to the stage was proudly flying the flag which apparently is for "minor attracted persons". Major ick. The drag queen that was on stage at the time was encouraging her to twerk. The parents didn't seem to have an issue with it. But yuck.

In terms of pride month, my G/B DC hate it.

TheWineoftheChicken · Today 13:41

It’s not my thing, so I don’t go.

No, please tell me you are lying!

I think we are miles apart when it comes to the protection of children.

Not sure it's worth us engaging we are that far apart.

Tell me where your other posts are about the protection of children and I will believe you that this thread isn't about gay people and your dislike of them.

vezesez · Today 13:42

PauliesWalnuts · Today 13:18

I don't like ours - it's very gay-man/trans woman-centric and they've bullied out the lesbians. Pride is great if you're a flamboyant, camp, person with a penis but if you deviate from that they don't want you involved.

This!

ThatCyanCat · Today 13:42

Slightyamusedandsilly · Today 13:31

But what sort of bondage? Mask? Chains? Leather? PVC? Ball gag?

Most of the above can be part of any alternative clothing. I've had kids turn up at the front door at Halloween in gimp masks.

If you don't explain it to children, they won't know.

I'd be a lot more concerned about randos on the high street burned red, sweating, arse crack on show with their man boobs out around children, than a few blokes dressed as extreme versions of the YMCA leather dude.

If you are offended by a shirtless man with sunburn perspiring on a hot day, there's no way you're not offended by a man in fetish gear in public in the middle of the day (and you're a bit too chill about children in gimp masks too - you must realise that's inappropriate).

This is performative crap.

I don't dislike them, what an odd thing to say.

It’s seems like it’s now used a platform for people to flaunt their sexual fetishes. I have no desire to see that.

GinaandGin · Today 13:43

coulditbeme2323 · Today 13:16

Yes, last year it was held in a public park in our town and spilled out into the town itself.

There were some extremely adult outfits, bondage etc, and I didn't think it was appropriate for the middle of the day.

Away and clutch pearls
I have more of an issue with churches and their disgusting conversion therapy

MermaidMartian · Today 13:43

I think it's great that bullied and misunderstood people get one day a year to celebrate their community, feel accepted and that they belong. How they do that is none of my business. If I'm in town at the same time as Pride I just enjoy the vibes and cheer them on from a far.

I think you really need to relax. As long as it's not indecent exposure, leave them to it.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · Today 13:43

coulditbeme2323 · Today 13:20

Are the two connected?

Can't both things be bad?

Well I don’t think “adult outfits” are an issue, unless people’s genitalia is showing.

Which wouldn’t be allowed anyway.

But if you’re going to focus your ire on something I wouldn’t pick a peaceful parade.

There we go. Flying a flag for paedophiles. Exactly what I’m talking about. Some people on here have no idea at all about what Pride has become.

That's what my adult DC told me it was for. I haven't verified it and can't remember what it looks like to check!

My DC were disgusted by it BTW.

Some of the outfits relating to the bondage aesthetic/lifestyle do make me uncomfortable, and I can understand some people wanting to avoid such things with children as it is quite confronting and could lead to questions they find awkward.

But then isn't that basically the whole point? Overall I think the event is overwhelmingly positive.

What is the whole point? Talking to children about bondage?
