Does anybody else dislike Pride?

We have one in our town for the second year running, and it's just really off.

Now before I get the "don't be homophobic comments" I am very much live and let live.

It's just that it can be very adult in the middle of the day.

I wonder if we live in the same city OP as ours sounds very similar.

I took our young kids last year, it was a fun family day out, live music etc. I fully support the cause.

There were some men (of course men) dressed in some gross bondage gear in the middle of the day. Could have done without that. But to my mind that’s reflective of those couple of individuals being wrong uns. It’s not the fault of Pride in general.

Slightyamusedandsilly · Today 13:22

Nope. I love it. I also love the Mela, Christmas festivals and markets, the lunar festival, Eid al fitr Iftar, Easter fayres, Carnival.

Any celebration is a good celebration. Coming together of happy people. Makes life worth living.

I am happy to say it's not outing, I am in Windsor.

Love Pride!

Threads like this are why it's more needed than ever.

Hate pride events now. Often very sexualised and can be very lesbian unfriendly. even to the point of being banned

Because parents don't want bondage gear around kids?

I don't like ours - it's very gay-man/trans woman-centric and they've bullied out the lesbians. Pride is great if you're a flamboyant, camp, person with a penis but if you deviate from that they don't want you involved.

This. My closest friend is a lesbian and she and her wife won’t attend anymore. They definitely don’t think it’s suitable for their children. It’s a real shame.

Slightyamusedandsilly · Today 13:23

coulditbeme2323 · Today 13:19

No, it's not live and let live - when it comes to children seeing sexual outfits in the middle of the day! That's just wrong.

What do you do on the beach when women are topless and in thongs? Or men in tight trunks?

Jesus Christ, it’s once a year OP. Get a grip.

There are lots of things I don’t enjoy, but I just don’t go. In fact I haven’t been to Pride many times as I’m not brilliant with crowds, but that’s a me issue.

Pride is an inherently joyful, non violent event. You don’t hear of riots, crime and arrests at Pride, people just go to enjoy themselves and to be visible.

LGBT people still encounter a lot of prejudice, and it’s on the rise again with the likes of Reform becoming more prominent. Companies who once loved jumping on what seemed like a safe bandwagon to advertise their product are dropping off - they were only allies when it was safe. I would say it’s needed more than ever.

Excellent post and totally agree.

It is not even remotely the same is it.

Ive seen more tits on the ham faced men who take their shirts off in a heatwave than I have at Pride.

I usually find if I dont like something I dont go. You should try it.

How? Middle of the day. Nudity. Is it because one is near water? Because you're also wearing swimsuits? Because you're expecting it?

Lots of people either naive or disingenuous here. I'm assuming OP is talking about such child friendly delights as this

I do think generally that weird sex people (mostly men) have hijacked the movement, to its detriment.

You aren’t being discriminated against because you’re not allowed to dress like a pup or with a collar round your neck or whatever in public in the middle of the day. Thats just forcing your fetish on other people. It has nothing to do with being gay or lesbian really, and it does damage the cause somewhat. But some people just crave the attention.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · Today 13:26

coulditbeme2323 · Today 13:16

Yes, last year it was held in a public park in our town and spilled out into the town itself.

There were some extremely adult outfits, bondage etc, and I didn't think it was appropriate for the middle of the day.

Thanks. For comparison, how do you feel about the kinds of revealing outfits often worn at Carnival?

Comeonelieen · Today 13:26

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · Today 13:18

Oh Lord save us from adult outfits!

So much worse than the actual violence that takes place at right-wing events.

It’s not of course. But even so it’s not appropriate for a parade during the day.
Late evening would be ok as less young kids about.

A bloke in slightly tight swimming trunks at the beach is not even in the same ball park has a bloke in full bondage walking another bloke on a lead.

I'm fine with Pride. We used to go to Brighton with friends when we lived in London, and it was always great fun.

What pisses me off, and which has become far more mainstream both within Pride and within mainstream culture in general, is the misgynistic blackface that is drag. Wear your bondage gear and a gimp mask on the High Street at lunchtime, and snog the face off your boyfriend/girlfriend, and I am genuinely happy, but stop lampooning women as bitchy, screechy, superficial and hypersexualised while you retain the societal privilege of being men.

Yes. All this. Isn’t it great that people have so many differences but everyone enjoys a good party!

I’ve taken my kids to ours a few times if we are free. So much glitter! I’m in Scotland and there’s a group of rainbow kilted bagpipers that make me smile every time.

I have avoided my city centre for 2.5 years every Saturday due to the hate marches (my kids and I are Jewish) so I think it should be easy enough to avoid one thing on one day once a year. Just go in the opposite direction - they won’t chase you!

I have to say, I sort of enjoy the idea of a huge pride event amongst Windsor’s royalty and Lego.

I shouldn't be able to pop to my local high street because I don't want to see men in leathers walking on a lead?

You sound creepy.

Been a while since I saw someone dressed in full on bondage at the beach which I believe was OP’s primary concern. False analogy.

MrCollinsandhisboiledpotatoes · Today 13:28

I quite like it, it's usually a nice atmosphere but I do find that's its become very trans centric and LGB people are being pushed out a little.

I'm working on pride day this year so won't be attending. I'm not relieved to be out of the way, but I'm not gutted either.
