New neighbour has asked us to stop construction on new home until daughter has finished exams.

This is such a tricky one for me. We bought a house that needed a complete overhaul a year ago. We've finally gotten through architects, planning permission and trying to find affordable builders etc. It has been stressful.
We broke ground this week and the neighbours have asked us to stop until dd has finished her exams in 3 weeks.
I really feel for the family and can't imagine how upsetting it must be for them at this crucial time (we had no idea they had a child sitting exams this summer). My husband has offered them an office at his work around the corner to facilitate study. I wouldn't mind postponing if it wouldn't cost us 30k to do so as builders are working to a set time frame. I wouldn't even mind the extra costs we'd incur through having to stay in our current accommodation for another month if it weren't for the builders' costs which we simply can't afford.
I'm worried now that we're going to start off on a terrible note with our new neighbours which would be such a shame considering my current neighbours are like family.
Are we being unreasonable to continue with the build in these circumstances?

yANBU. If say hypothetically, you halt until exam ends, then they’ll be unhappy that she can’t relax after a months study marathon due to noise, and so on. That’s life. Get on with your build, maybe send her a card with’wish you good luck with your exams’ and may be a gift card for take out or Amazon.

Then you’re not in the property or building industry
It exists as a standard term for completely ready to move into

Where did I say that I was in 'property' and 'building' specific jobs? I'm not an estate agent or builder.

Yes, my app keeps auto correcting

🤔

Noshowlomo · 04/06/2026 17:39

You are not being unreasonable. You weren’t to know when exams are and with builders, things can drag on and on. It’s a bit shit but it’s just noise and there are alternatives.

Why would I want to be neighbours with an inconsiderate and reactive person.

Sorry, your post makes no sense in response to
mine? Did you quote the wrong post?

You mentioned you had experience of this many many posts ago

I’m not checking, There's just too many

Nevertheless
Its a standard term

They will hate you forever and you will deserve it.

You've been faffing around for a year from their perspective, then suddenly you want to make their daughters life harder while you live elsewhere so the noise and disruption doesn't bother you.

This is a joke. Right.

Farawaytreemagic · 04/06/2026 17:47

WhatsAWeekend · 04/06/2026 17:33

If you read OPs posts they will be at home revising

Yes, I saw that. I’m sure the school would allow the child to use premises to revise ifn these nightmare circumstances

OP is setting herself up for some revenge on her if the exams go badly because of this

Yes of renovations. I am not a builder and it is more a builders term or Developers. £550000 is categorically loads for an extension on a semi.

Cavycrazy444 · 04/06/2026 17:48

I think if you explain the cost and the benefit of her using an office, they should understand. She should be without distractions there and could take breaks like people at work do. Too many temptations to go off task at home. Good luck!

Why is it more a developers or building term, you’d never heard the term five minutes ago.

Why have you brought up the cost again in responce to the term turn key

The term turn key is used when buying property aswell
Estate agents often use it

We use it as Architects. Our clients ( not always developers ) use it in their contracts to us
Its not the niche term you seem to think it is
It’s just a term you haven’t heard of
🤷‍♀️

good point @Witchonenowbob

Smilingthroughtears · 04/06/2026 17:51

No. You aren’t. It’s a huge amount of money.
I have a daughter doing GCSEs and work in a school with year 11s currently sitting their GCSEs.
My suggestion would be a basket full of gifts and a card explaining the amount you will lose. Top of these gifts is loop headphones-look on their website for the best option. Then lots of snacks and some pampering stuff. Maybe a gift card. Shows you care but doesn’t cost 30k.

If she's like most teenagers she will wear headphones when studying anyway, your Dh is very kind to offer an office

🤔

I know how to spell as I have an education- luckily for me, I was able to revise for my qualifications in relative peace.

So you're an Architect but don't think £550000 renovations on a semi is reasonable- yeah right!

So pretty much wouldn’t understand the term ‘turn key’ then ?

Mcoco · 04/06/2026 17:55

You are a very caring person OP and unfortunately there is little you can do. Your husband has been so kind to offer his work space. My daughter sat her GCSEs last year so I feel incredibly sorry for the girl. However you are trying to offer solutions it wasn't delibrate. I personally think the office space sounds an ideal solution.

Ariela · 04/06/2026 17:55

I would a) find out exactly which days and times her exams are on - and see if the builders can concentrate the noisy stuff to the days when she's out of the house
b) buy the nicest trendiest noise cancelling headphones

ThreadGuardDog · 04/06/2026 17:56

As I have heard it come to think of it but only by builders. Not young ones.

Thank you. Over the last year we've had several requests from these neighbours. We've had to hire people to deal with our joining hedge, pay for a new fence and told that we'd have to consult them on our access lane as the current cover has been providing them with cover and they don't want to lose this as their bikes might rust so 'we'll have to agree on your plans for sheltering this space'.

Is this a shared access lane? If not, you're not under any obligation to ensure their biles don't rust! Are the bikes in the lane? What needs to go through the lane eg dustbin? Again, depending on ownership, this may be really cheeky of them. If for example, they are storing their bikes their without either permission or agreement and blocking the access they need to be more amenable to you. I might have picked up their tone wrong from your report but they sound quite entitled and pushy.
