AIBU this is NOT a moustache

My son (age 13) has been given a Saturday morning detention for having a moustache (not allowed at his school).
I have attached a pic, I don’t think this is a moustache and certainly not enough to shave.
Interested in what everyone thinks before I challenge the school.

That's what we used to call bum fluff. Totally ridiculous.

I sincerely hope that the teacher who gave him a detention isn't responsible for teaching biology or PSE.

Yes, complain, in person and in writing.

That’s not a moustache.

I think some days I have a better moustache than that!! 😭😂

I was thinking that about myself too. 😀 Sometimes it suddenly appears from nowhere. I am quite pale skinned, with dark hair so more noticeable than that when it appears.

Anonyhouse · Yesterday 17:38

This is ridiculous. Who are they to tell people what naturally growing hair to remove from their body?! My son has similar, he did shave it once and broke out in spots and has left it well alone since. Awful to embarrass teens like this, as if puberty isn’t hard enough.

hallenbad · Yesterday 17:40

Bloody outrageous Op. how dare they dictate when a 13 yo starts to shave!

SelfSeededAsh · Yesterday 17:40

Maybe the teachers need to learn about personal space.

I agree with others that this is a crazy rule.

ChristmasStickDaddy · Yesterday 17:41

Firstly, that is a ridiculous rule anyway! I’ve known girls/women with more facial hair- would they punish them?!
Secondly, even if I agreed with upholding that rule, he has no moustache there worth shaving anyway! My 8 year old son has about the same amount, and mines not far off 😂
How absolutely absurd!!!

Talkingfrog · Yesterday 17:43

If there is a requirement that pupils have no facial hair, does it also apply to the staff? I am guessing it doesn't.

Where as wearing a uniform isn't a requirement all jobs, it is in many. My guess would be there are more jobs that require a uniforn to be worn, than would say you can't have a moustache.

Riflesandmess · Yesterday 17:45

I can't understand how anything which occurs naturally on the body can be part of uniform. It's awful.

Detention for having flared nostrils? Blue eyes? Curly hair?

Ethelspagetti · Yesterday 17:46

I personally wouldn’t allow the detention on that basis! I’d want to talk to
someone at school. I’d even go so far to say that he isn’t starting shaving until he is ready.

grumpygrape · Yesterday 17:47

Sorry if this has been said before but I hope they don't come across any Sikh boys.

FuriousInventions · Yesterday 17:47

Legally he’s not allowed to purchase a razor for another 3 years. School are BVU.

Boomtiara · Yesterday 17:48

Saturday morning? How is this enforceable?

BreadedChickenLips · Yesterday 17:48

Absolutely definitely not a moustache. My goodness how precious was the teacher about a bit of darker facial hair?!

Yes without doubt mine is more fullsome than this.

How shaming of schools.

Boomtiara · Yesterday 17:49

The school I work in we have Asian boys aged 15 up with full beards! I don’t understand why this school is telling this boy to shave at all. I’d be doing more than just not sending him in to the (Saturday morning?!) detention

Delphiniumandlupins · Yesterday 17:52

I think the school could (and should) have spoken to him privately before going to Saturday detention. But I can't see a tache in your picture.

Slightyamusedandsilly · Yesterday 17:52

I've got more than that now (thanks for the waxing reminder!).

InterestedDad37 · Yesterday 17:55

As adolescents we called this 'bumfluff' (because it looked like... etc).
Some growth, but not strong enough to merit shaving. So no, that isn't a moustache.

IPM · Yesterday 17:55

If that tiny bit of bum fluff isn't allowed, what on earth do they do with Asian, Greek, Turkish boys?

Some of them have naturally thick, dark hair growth from age 10/11.

Do they expect them to shave at lunchtime too incase it's grown back since the morning??

Do you think the dress code should be the same for teachers and students then?

Stade197 · Yesterday 17:56

I would absolutely bot be sending my DS to a Saturday morning detention for this! How can they discriminate against a teen for hitting puberty?

It's definitely not a proper moustache but I can't even believe a school can have a policy requiring them to remove them! What if children don't have access to or money for razors? We teach our kids about consent over their bodies and how they need to love and accept themselves etc then force them to shave body hair at 13!!

Selfseedpoppies · Yesterday 17:58

Our school also has 'boys must be cleanshaven' in its uniform rules but I've only known it enforced when a year 11 returned from summer with a full beard. My dd18 has more of a tache than that and has no desire to remove it.

Alwayswonderedwhy · Yesterday 17:59

That's absolutely awful. Poor lad. They're basically trying to make going through puberty more difficult than it already is.
As for a detention on a weekend, I wouldn't entertain that under any circumstances. Weekends are not school time.

Fizbosshoes · Yesterday 18:01

DS is 16 and has got slightlymore facial hair than this and I still dont consider it a moustache, nor do I think his 5 chin hairs constitute a beard however much he tries to claim they are! 🤣

Im amazed a school would consider such a thing and id feel aggrieved for a teacher (and the pupil of course).giving up a Saturday morning to facilitate a detention for that!
