AIBU this is NOT a moustache

My son (age 13) has been given a Saturday morning detention for having a moustache (not allowed at his school).
I have attached a pic, I don’t think this is a moustache and certainly not enough to shave.
Interested in what everyone thinks before I challenge the school.

YANBU @ChocHotolate there is barely anything there. How ludicrous your son's school is!

Mischance · Yesterday 17:10

It's just a bit of bum fluff!

It seems pretty cruel to jump on young men's pride in their masculinity.

trendysetter · Yesterday 17:10

That would have been called a little bit of bum fluff in my day, you'd have been laughed out of school if you tried to say you had a moustache with that.

Definitely not a moustache and ridiculous that you can get a detention for facial hair.

CandidRaven · Yesterday 17:12

What a mad rule! So boys have to shave their face to go to school now? Madness

Zov · Yesterday 17:13

I wonder if they would say the same to a girl who had some facial hair on her upper lip? 🤔

Shrinkhole · Yesterday 17:16

Wow my DS has more than that and he doesn’t want to start shaving yet. I don’t think it’s defiance or a fashion statement just not being ready to enter the world of daily shaving as yet. I would be very upset if the school forced this decision for something as minor as that. As has been said many women and girls have more than that!

BauhausOfEliott · Yesterday 17:16

Good grief. That's barely bloody visible! I'm pretty sure there are 13-year-old girls out there with as much of a 'moustache' as that. He certainly doesn't look like he's at a point where he'd need to start shaving.

(I also think banning boys from growing their facial hair is bad anyway. It's not like a moustache represents some sort of catastrophic failure of hygiene or grooming.)

Anarchy99 · Yesterday 17:17

He certainly has hair on his lip, albeit pale

Everyone, including women, has some hair on their top lip, and that's barely more than peach fuzz.

I was going to say this too, especially as this hair looks blonde but some girls have very dark facial hair which is more noticeable. I don’t think any child (or adult really) should be made to remove any hair they don’t want to

GalaDinner · Yesterday 17:25

Way to go to make young people feel awkward about puberty.

BlueBox81 · Yesterday 17:28

They should not be punishing him for entering puberty.

hypnovic · Yesterday 17:28

Bet the teachers in peri can beat that ..utterly ridiculous..must he shave his arms too?

BoogieVoogieAllNightLong · Yesterday 17:29

Dear lord, the world has gone insane. There was a 16 year old boy when I was at school who managed to grow a full beard! I seem to recall he had a friendly competition with one male teacher. I'd definitely challenge that.

Purplecatshopaholic · Yesterday 17:09

Yes, and.. @Possiblyfamous ? This rule is crazy, nothing to do with education and should be called out (never mind the fact, the poor lad doesn’t actually have a ‘tache..)

Edited

It’s the over reaction - people nowadays seem to have going ‘ballistic’ as a default reaction to anything that they object to. I agree that it’s ridiculous but surely it’s better to model a reasoned response for your child than ‘going ballistic’

Occasionalsnaccident · Yesterday 17:30

That’s ridiculous!

Hangingcrystal · Yesterday 17:30

Of course it isn't.
Be careful of shaving that and causing skin problems.
Poor boy.
Disgraceful of the school.
Definitely challenge that.

EBearhug · Yesterday 17:30

BlueBox81 · Yesterday 17:28

This. And even if it were more of a recognisable moustache and they have a clean-shaven policy, wouldn't it be fairer to ask if he's considered starting shaving yet, rather than jumping straight to detention?

PrimeSeason · Yesterday 17:31

My moustache is bolder than his.

giemepeace · Yesterday 17:32

No way it’s a moustache and echo all the others saying what an awful rule! Would they insist a hairy girl must remove hair?

BadBadCat · Yesterday 17:32

It's definitely not a full blown moustache. However, I never understand why boys don't start shaving when they start to grow facial hair like this as it's not a good look the half grown moustache.

KermitTheToad · Yesterday 17:33

Jesus, there's no hope for me (female) then. I have more hair on my upper lip and I aint shaving it, so suspension for me I guess. 😅😅

Random321 · Yesterday 17:33

Unbelievable. I would fight this for as long as it takes for common sense to prevail.

TheEponymousGrub · Yesterday 17:34

Blueuggboots · Yesterday 17:08

I would be seeking clarification from the school to find out if this detention was only given for your son not having started shaving yet, or is there more to the story?

This! A detention wouldn't be used as a first sanction for uniform violation, would it? I wonder if it's been imposed for something else that he hasn't told you about.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · Yesterday 17:34

Bloody hell, the poor lad! Someone must be making it their business to inspect upper lips if they're spotting that. Ask if they're policing girls' facial hair as well.
