To consider cancelling my holiday because of the EES?

I just can’t cope with this stress. I will be travelling alone and I can’t afford (literally or mentally) to miss a flight because of this system.

I just don’t want to go. It’s looming over me. I did it in February going into Norway, but that makes no difference. You’re still in the queue for hours. I’m flying with Ryanair and they only open their bag drop 2 hours before, they’re now saying three hours to get through. So it’ll be literally impossible.

I wouldn't be surprised if you also dislike Farage and Tommy Robinson.

@ITMA2000, are you suggesting that they are likeable? Why?

TheWayOfTheWorld · 31/05/2026 09:25

OP I did Milan with my kids (and luggage) a few weeks ago - yes there were queues but they moved quickly and we got through no problem. Was back by myself with hand luggage 2 weeks ago and weren’t even any queues.

They could easily negotiate a deal with the EU wherein we’re excluded from those checks. But he has to pretend to be a man of the people with his “Gooner” status.

How? Why on earth would the EU treat the UK any differently from all the other non-EU countries?

And why blame Starmer for this rather than May, Johnson, Truss and Sunak?

Sparkletastic · 31/05/2026 09:29

Ah well. Ryanair’s loss is Milan’s gain.

idontwanttogoanymore · 30/05/2026 22:37

Milan. One of the worst affected airports.

Go on a train? Eurostar to Paris/ Paris to Milan. It will take longer but less stress?

OnlyReplyToIdiots · 31/05/2026 09:31

What exactly are you hoping to get from this thread OP?

Everyone has told you are being ridiculous - but instead of taking the very sound reasoning on board you’re ignoring it and calling people bullies…

Maybe you should cancel and use the time instead to speak to someone about your anxiety.

UserN0tFound · 31/05/2026 09:31

The advice is only for the return flight (I.e. EU exit) if it helps? There are no changes on the UK side to my knowledge.

AzureCats · 31/05/2026 09:31

Repack your shit into a backpack and don't check it. Get there stupidly early to get through all the checks. Then luggage literally can't go without you. I also think it'll be fine. Solo travellers get through so quickly compared to big families and infrequent flyers.

Cantmakemymindup2 · 31/05/2026 09:38

I flew with Ryanair on Tuesday this week from Mallorca. We checked our bags in with no problem 3 hours before our flight. We expected queues at the EES part but there wasn’t. If you have no children then you just go straight through the electronic gates with no queue. We had kids and it took 10 minutes to get through.

We also received an email from Ryanair telling me to arrive early at the airport. It would be pointless them asking people to arrive early if the bag drop wouldn’t be open.

The bag drop opens at the latest 2 hours before, not the earliest. If Milan airport is supposed to be one of the worst hit airports, there is no way they are going to open it 2 hours before. If everybody missed their flight because they didn’t open bag drop early enough, then they would have to delay the flight leaving anyway.

I am attaching an image from Ryanair’s website which says …

The Bag Drop desks open at the latest 2 hours before the scheduled flight departure time and closes 40 minutes before the scheduled departure time unless you are notified otherwise before flight departure. Please check in your baggage as early as possible.

Why not phone RyanAir first thing tomorrow and ask them what they are doing about this? I'm sure they're not ignoring the issue, and maybe you will believe them if you won't believe us.

JoWilkinsonsno1fan · 31/05/2026 09:45

I flew into croatia three weeks ago it was so well organised we got through in 20 minutes.

likelysuspect · 31/05/2026 09:45

I havent read the thread. I'll be honest that reports of queues (which wer already bad after Brexit due to us not having EU entry) are putting me off going abroad by plane. I cant queue for long periods due to bladder issues and OH cant stand for more than 10 mins, due to nerve issues, although he isnt disabled and wouldnt have any 'proof' of needing special measures

So we just cant risk long queues where we are likely to be standing.

ITMA2000 · 31/05/2026 09:09

So a few hours delay going on holiday trumps the benefits of Brexit, which include taking control of our own laws, no longer having unelected politicians, making our own trade deals around the world, and controlling our borders?
I think you will find most people think a border delay is a price worth paying!

That's the stupidest thing anyone has said on this thread, to be honest.

Yellow2024 · 31/05/2026 09:46

Have you travelled recently? I think sometimes if you haven't it can feel overwhelming but it really is quite easy.
There is so much time to kill. You will be absolutely fine. Everyone else will be flying on the same flight, do you really think potentially 50% of those passengers won't make it?
I think you are perhaps spiralling about this.

ITMA2000 · 31/05/2026 09:16

Gosh! I've never met a fan of Tommy Robinson! You're my first.😂

Anyway I don't want to derail the thread talking about those two no-marks.

ITMA2000 · 31/05/2026 09:16

I dislike them because I'm not a knuckle-dragging racist.

StealthMama · 31/05/2026 09:49

Given the nature of your frustrations with the Government and their supposed interference with your plans, I’m surprised you booked anything at all.

The travel is easy. Like many others I’ve done it this week.

You are looking for excuses to blame other people or institutions for your own untreated anxiety. Which is a you problem.

You have two choices.

  1. get a grip, behave like and adult and go on the trip like everyone else is successfully doing
  2. that includes cancelling travel plans you are personally incapable of completing and seek help for your anxiety

because the new 3 minute biometric system bares no impact on your existing plans other than in your head.

Fearingtheworst24 · 31/05/2026 09:49

I think it massively depends on which airport. Just back from Spain and no queues where I was. That's not to say that other airports aren't struggling with the volume.

Stoicandhappy · 31/05/2026 09:53

@likelysuspect in your position I would request Special Assistance. I did that when travelling with my elderly aunt. You don’t have to provide evidence of disability, just explain your DH can’t stand for more than ten minutes.

I quite enjoyed sitting on the buggy with the flashing lights going through the airport!

Maybe you could request Special Assistance OP, citing your anxiety issues? It might help you?

PrincessofWills · 31/05/2026 09:53

Travel with just a cabin bag, easy, never check a bag. Did 3 months in Asia on a cabin bag . . .

checkcheckcheckchick · 31/05/2026 09:54

Op you’re being pretty dramatic. I swear half the people I know have gone to Europe for May half term. But if you’re this anxious, just cancel it, this is just one of a multitude of things that can happen when you travel. Or maybe just avoid Ryan Air, I’ve managed that my whole life!

SockPlant · 31/05/2026 09:54

idontwanttogoanymore · 30/05/2026 22:33

Good attitude till your suitcase ends up in your final airport and you’re stuck in Europe! The government needs to step in, and asap.

a plane won't fly with unaccompanied baggage so don't worry about that.

You seem to have some kind of anxiety, have you ever spoken to a health professional about that?

If it is really stressing you out cancel it. Have you mailed Ryanair about it?

There have been a lot of scare stories in the press, tbh I'm not sure it is half as bad as the press are making out.

Happytaytos · 31/05/2026 09:54

idontwanttogoanymore · 31/05/2026 08:44

Not a troll. Just someone who’s concerned.

Travel agents wouldn’t be the first person you call. Especially at a weekend.

They should be their first person you'd call.

If they aren't I'd question your agent choice.

Is this sarcasm? We all know what most people think of brexit now. And no one likes being delayed on holiday.

We fly in and out of Madrid a lot and have found them absolutely awful, but that was up to last year, this year we have made plans not to fly by plane.
