Do TV weather reports need giant city name signs?

All TV weather reports show a map with town/city names - usually Glasgow, Aberdeen, Liverpool, Hull, Birmingham, Cardiff, Belfast, Southampton and London. The signs usually stay for the duration of the broadcast and have dark blue or black backgrounds. If you are unlucky enough to live under one of these signs you cannot see the weather as it passes under the sign.

Is it necessary for the broadcaster to keep these signs up for the duration of the show?

Do people forget where they live?

Do you know roughly which coastal or geographic feature you like reasonably close to? I

f you don't , then are you likely to understand the concept of a weather forecast?

Weather is not so area specific. Weather in London is likely to be the same as an area 50 miles away if not several hundred. So not it doesn’t bother me. Plus isn’t there always a regional weather forecast straight afterwards?
