Allow a play date where mum unapologetically supports children’s education tax

Just this really, our local independent prep school closed due to the education tax earlier this year and has caused absolute chaos for lots of families, including my own. My dd (6) has been invited for a play date with a girl she seems very friendly with and who seems very sweet, but I’ve since found out from another parent that the mum is an ‘unapologetic education taxer’. My instinct is to cancel the play date, AIBU?

@GigglyOrange I genuinely don’t know if you’re being goady. But “shielding your kids from those opinions” you should be doing the opposite. They will be happier and get on better in life if they can see others’ points of view and not just exist in a bubble.

Tryagain26 · 30/05/2026 12:07

I suspect this isn't real because the exact same post was on here several months ago. Even the terminology was exactly the same.
As I said at the time though it is not a tax on education! It is applying vat to a business

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 30/05/2026 12:07

I also only send my children on play dates with those who ideologically align with us. We have Google form they have to fill in detailing their economic, social, and religious leanings. It’s only 124 questions and we expect at least 100/124. Who would want their child exposed to something like socialism… or worse environmentalism?!

GigglyOrange · 30/05/2026 12:05

I get what you’re saying, but this is children’s education tax we’re talking about. I thinks it’s clear what type of person would support it and isn’t it our job has parents or as a society to try and shield children from those types of people?

What type of people? The people who think we should tax luxuries, and that children should have equitable opportunities and not have the standard of overall education brought down by a system that allows those who can pay, to buy their way out of a failing system?
Fucking hell, protect the children 😂

hopspot · 30/05/2026 11:22

Me too.

Me as well. All children should have access to the same quality of education (wherever possible) and it should be properly funded by the government.

Mumsgirls · 30/05/2026 12:05

You might need a lie down op. I get taxed on my employee Bupa benefit. Because it’s an extra and a choice and I agree with it. The private health people pay vat too shocker !!!!

What are you taking about? Irrelevant to the thread, but you don’t pay VAT on private medical insurance. That would make as much sense as taxing childrens education

DamsonBramble · 30/05/2026 12:09

Yes cancel it. You'll be doing the other little girl a favour protecting her from hanging out with such a spiteful person as you who punishes little girls for their parents' views. You'd probably mistreat her

GigglyOrange · 30/05/2026 11:46

Wow 10 minutes in and the comments have convinced me that my first instinct was right ! I will reject the play date, I see protecting children from toxic people who hold immoral views as part of my job as a parent.

Immoral views?

Toxic people?

Wtaf?

dunroamingfornow · 30/05/2026 12:11

It’s not education tax. It’s VAT

Cosyblankets · 30/05/2026 12:11

Thought this was a site for adults?
You do know you can be friends with people and have different opinions?

You are not being unreasonable. I can't tell you how many play dates I've had to turn down because of the parents' view on the the Town and Country Planning (Use Classes) Order 1987 and the bureucracy around changing permitted usage.

😂😂😂

The op doesn't seem keen to elaborate on the 'type of people' she believes agree with VAT on private education. It's a shame as I'd love to know, I think she may be rather surprised.

Error404FucksNotFound · 30/05/2026 12:12

On the plus side, with the money you'll save on education, you could start househunting for a larger place in a better location.

The PP will mean income tax is paid on it, I also have to pay tax on my private healthcare. Just got the record the VAT on private schools is not "Education Tax" it is VAT. Get over yourself

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 30/05/2026 12:13

Why are you punishing your child and her friend for the friend’s parents’ views?

Edited

That’s some quite astounding ignorance of the policy. It’s a tax on education services provided to children paid by the children (fee payer).

I strongly suggest you do some basic reading before commenting

I don't agree with the tax (partly as there shouldn't be a tax on education, partly as these are likely to be the parents paying huge tax already, and partly because labour promised this money would be directed to state education and it clearly hasn't been, so feels like a vindictive policy/vote winner) but it definitely wouldn't be a deal breaker for me in a friendship for myself, let alone my child

Or buying better “quality “ friends for DD.

IchiNiSanShiGo · 30/05/2026 12:16

If the school closed, what kind of school does your DD attend now @GigglyOrange ?

In my opinion your opinions are immoral. But I wouldn't stop my child being friends with your child because it's not your child's fault that you have views like that

Income tax is paid on income, the clue is in the name. You are confused. You don’t pay tax on your private healthcare. The tax is on education and vocation training of children, again you are confused, it is an education tax

Don't patronise me I know exactly what the law says and also that you are trying to twist it for your own political reasons.

Such an excellent example of the benefits of private education!

Dillydollydingdong · 30/05/2026 12:18

This is a play date for six year olds, not a political debate. Let it go. If you disagree with someone on a pov, just don't talk about it!

In your terms, surely 'private education tax' would be a better definition then. State education is not taxed.
