To pay for this rather than do it myself?

Hanjusy · Yesterday 20:54

Is it a waste of money to spend £25 to get my car cleaned inside/out as opposed to doing it myself? A debate I had earlier with a colleague, I like that it’s hassle free and seems a faff to buy everything needed to do it on my own.

Its worth it for a thorough valeting. I hate cleaning my car and get fed up after 10 minutes so my car usually resembles a bin truck 🤣

Once essentials are paid for, you work to make your life better, be that for now, tomorrow , next year, next decade. Otherwise, what’s the point?

I could do the cleaning, the gardening, wash my car, do the food shop but I pay other people to do that (in thr case of food shop - pick it off the shelf, scan, load, deliver),

Paying for these buys me time to work, to rest, to do more enjoyable things. Plus, it keeps people employed and puts money back into the economy.
Everyone’s a winner!

Yup. Same with going to a resturant when you can cook yourself. Or buying a jumper when you could knit. And don't get me started on going to the theatre when you could just switch the big light off and take it in turns to recite Hamlets soliloquy and sing I dreamed a dream.

That is an absolute bargain. Pays for itself

I know someone who told a colleague that it was a waste of money but they swan off to the hairdressers every 12 weeks spending several hundred pounds each time! I dont think anyone should criticise how someone else spends their money (assuming they have the funds).

MinnieMountain · Today 06:13

I could clean our house but we'd rather pay someone else to do it.

Jellycatspyjamas · Today 08:23

I work on the basis of could I do the same job cheaper, ie if it took them two hours could I do the job to the same standard, and would it cost me more. So for a two hour job if the time and materials are less than I charge my time out at and the job is done to a higher standard than I can be arsed to do and I can afford it, I’ll get someone else to do it unless it’s something I actively enjoy.

On that basis £25 for a car valet is an absolute bargain.

hellofrommyothername · Today 08:25

I’ve never paid to have this done but I’m amazed it’s so cheap! I might start outsourcing it.

BlindSpotForCats · Today 08:27

I never understand why people get so upset over what other people choose to spend their own money on (see; private schools; nice car; nails done every 2 weeks; trips to the pub).

I once had a boss have a right go at me for employing a cleaner. Apparently I was a 'lazy slut'. (Using slut in the traditional sense). Sadly I didn't address it with her, but it certainly made me resolve to never justify myself to anyone.

DH calls my car 'The wheelie bin'.

If it's worth 25 quid to you, it isn't a waste of money.
If you have children you could get them to do it -- unlike cleaning the house, they can do a pretty good job and mine don't mind doing it.

Fraughtmum · Today 08:31

My car is 18 years old. Ive never cleaned it myself. Dh cleans it once a year otherwise id pay someone

TheLilacFinch · Today 08:35

I love getting my car cleaned. I’ve actually never cleaned my cars myself except for hoovering/dusting the inside.

Last time I had my car cleaned it was £80 and totally worth it.

Sunloungerhogger · Today 08:39

If it feels worth it to you then it’s money well spent! I guess it all depends on how much spare money you have versus how much spare time you have, but I am all for spending money on things that save me a time consuming job.

Wipeywipey · Today 08:59

Definately a bargain. It's £50 for that here! As the price goes up the pull does become weaker...

mondaytosunday · Today 09:25

Why are you even questioning this? I used to have a mobile valet do my car every other month. He did an amazing job (I moved away and have to park on the street so can’t have it done now).

Jellox · Today 09:33

I am unable to clean my car properly as I can’t plug anything in eg a Hoover or hose.

I park about a 5min walk from where I live and so it would mean carrying buckets of water to it.
I did buy a handheld Hoover but it was actually rubbish and didn’t suck anything up at all.

So yes I have to pay.
I’ve never paid a person to do it for me though, I just take it to a supermarket and use their Hoover and put it through the car wash.

DilemmaDelilah · Today 09:38

I have it done about twice a year, but then it doesn't get done at all otherwise.

Livpool · Today 09:42

Throw money at any ‘problem’ if you can afford it!

SmallTreeDeepRoots · Today 10:34

There isn’t a conveniently located one near me. But every couple of months I take DH to a hospital appointment. Leave car at a valet place and walk 10mins to hospital - saves paying hospital parking and I’m hanging about anyway.

I see it as keeping someone local in a job. That’s why I no longer feel guilty about sometimes getting my ironing done.

pinkpony88 · Today 13:17

I never clean my own car except for giving the inside a quick hoover and dust if it looks dusty. I hate doing it. I either pay a professional or promise extra sexual services to DH. Worked so far… 😉

Fortysevenpl · Today 13:19

If it’s going to be a nice job and save time for you, then it’s perfectly fine

PaperRhino · Today 21:03

It’s none of your colleague’s business. Recently I decided to get a cleaner. Not because I don’t have the time or ability to clean but because they do a better job, and because I work full time and don’t want to spend the weekend cleaning, and it’s my money to spend how I please. I also pay to get my car cleaned. It is nobody else’s business what you spend your money on.
