Women sniffing bakery item in Lidl

I found myself in Lidl today. I was initially quite impressed, as haven’t been to Lidl in many years. It looked much smarter than I remember. However, my initial delight was somewhat squashed as I walked past a woman in the bakery aisle whom picked up an item using the tongs of course, but then proceeded to sniff it. And I mean really sniff it, like it was a centimetre away from her nose, then return it to the thing that it was sitting in. I was somewhat disgusted and I don’t know if this is reasonable or not. I’m not a germophobia in general, but I certainly won’t be buying any bakery products from that Lidl anytime soon.

😭 this is why I like the french/Dutch system. We went to Lidl there and they were displayed behind transparent doors. You slide the one you want across using a sort of paddle/tong thing and it drops down sort of like a vending machine at which point you bag it. So you know none of the others have been tampered with.

Was it Ariana Grande? She was caught licking doughnuts in Lidl a few years ago.

Also skank-related Lidl gross-ness: at the start of the pandemic I saw a Russian woman opening the packets of face masks and trying them on. Dirty bitch 🤢

ThisSunnyBea · 28/05/2026 21:01

I’ve never sniffed the bakery items but I will sniff potatoes, and sanitary towels because a) potatoes smell if they’re dank and b) no one needs a foof smelling of rank cheap perfume

SneakyGremlin · 28/05/2026 21:03

I'd never sniff bakery items but I could spend hours sniffing all the fabric softeners Grin

How did you know she was Russian? And why did you think we needed to know it?

No one needs to use the word "foof". Jesus wept.

I sniff a lot of foods.

1 Exhale deeply.

2 Bring item to nose.

3 Inhale and savour aroma.

4 Remove item.

5 Exhale again.

No germs or aerosol spread about, but bystanders might not see this and just think I'm a rank fucker.

So she could have been from any former Soviet country or just a Duolingo fan then… 🙈 But that wouldn’t fit with anti-Russian sentiment I guess.

Ablondiebutagoody · 29/05/2026 12:16

Lidl bakery is pretty disgusting. I'm quite tall and can see on top of the cabinets. The filth up there is awful. Thick grey fluffy dusty grime.

I'm glad you asked that, as I was just thinking the exact same thing - as in, how did they know she was Russian? 😕

Hotupnorth · 29/05/2026 12:22

Some women were pawing away at unpacked bread rolls in Tesco and were quite indignant when I had a go at them. I mean, who wants to buy something someone else has had their grubby fingers all over. They just didn't get it. I'm now at the point where I only buy wrapped bread or rolls.

Better than Vajajay 😉

LauritaEvita · 29/05/2026 13:41

A woman in the Lidl local to my work lifts her dog up to smell the bakery items. I will
never buy anything from there for this reason.

I'm sure it's not that deep. Not everyone has an agenda.

Anarchy99 · 29/05/2026 13:44

Most dirty bastards don’t even use the tongs - I would never buy uncovered food like that.

It is covered in Lidl. The bakery items are behind glass doors.

UniquePinkSwan · 29/05/2026 13:53

It’s Lidl. It’s to be expected.

MightyDandelionEsq · 29/05/2026 13:58

A key reason I never touch unwrapped food (that can’t be washed or cooked) that’s freely available for the public to touch or bugs to land on.

It really grosses me out.

Skybluepinky · 29/05/2026 13:59

It’s like germ central everyone touching everything go to a proper bakery.

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning, in the clothing section and saw a woman shovelling crisps down her throat, licking her fingers , wiping them down her her shorts then picking up clothes for a closer look. Not food I know but still pretty disgusting.
