To be surprised that London buses dont have AirCon throughout?!

With the amount being spent on transport, I am surprised this basic addition wasn't a huge priority 😒

I think that the Elizabeth line might have AC, as you'd expect of new vehicles

You have access to TFL's financial records and evidence that they can afford this ?

The buses on the route I use have noisy hot air blowers. No cooling whatsoever.

The route masters are awful. It’s like a sauna upstairs in the heat.

Designed at the request of the previous Mayor. They did not initially have opening windows upstairs and had to be retrofitted.

They are an abomination with only about 12 seats downstairs which do not involve an internal step, so useless for many with some limitations with mobility. Sooner they are replaced the better.

Buses in the south of France where I was a couple of weeks ago had good aircon, so it can be done.

A simple window sticker asking for them to remain closed in the heat will solve that problem

With the driver reminding everyone periodically

Shops have doors that open and close all day, and you can feel the ac the second you step in

Edited

I was saying to a friend this is what they need - I think people just naturally open the windows without thinking about the impact on the Aircon.

I'm in London and some routes around here have Aircon - DD actually said she was a bit chilly on the bus yesterday. The single deckers which have Aircon seems to be more effective. Some buses seem to have a very feeble amount of Aircon upstairs which is barely noticeable.

The buses without are unbearable in this weather - and the design of the windows ensures there is very little airflow. I remember some buses in the past had windows that slid open and let much more breeze in. Buses in London rarely manage to get moving briskly enough to channel any air in anyway.

I think as they replace more buses with newer designs, Aircon will be standard like the charging points etc.

It's horrible for the drivers too - They're supposed to have Aircon in their cabs but often it blows out hot air, or they might get a fan which doesn't do much. Or nothing. My bf did get 1 free bottle of water for his shift though and a pear!

I thought they had all been retired. OP as others have said AC is no good if people open windows.

Maybe but I’ve still seen them.

Sorry I meant the new route masters. The old ones have been retired apart from the party ones.

Shops have aircon despite the opening and closing of doors, and theyre fine

As do some tubes

And buses in hot climates. Florida for example

Honestly, in london, anyone stopping the aircon will be publically shamed!

Why don't they bring back the old-style buses with the open rear platform? They didn't need aircon because there was room for the air to circulate properly.

Health & safety / accessibility, I think.

Routemasters used to be great in traffic jams. You could jump off the one at the back & run up to jump on the one at the front.

OnTheBoardwalk · 27/05/2026 21:46

Windows on the buses in my area are forced to stay open slightly. They remain open slightly cos of Covid!

Because they thought they’d outlasted their time.

WotsitsAndLambrini · 27/05/2026 22:04

In London and I can’t remember the last time I went on a bus without air con! I guess London’s a big place. There are umpteen different bus companies operating for TfL. We have electric buses here but maybe they’re not all over. It’s very good having it in this weather!

Most buses, not just the new Routemasters, have a step halfway back.

They are a vast improvement on the bendy buses, which used to block pedestrian crossings when they were stuck in traffic, and were really uncomfortable at the back.

Routemasters used to be great in traffic jams. You could jump off the one at the back & run up to jump on the one at the front.

Or jump on as it was moving away from the stop, and off if it was stuck in traffic.
But yes, 'Elf'n'Safety.
Ding Ding.

You need a Northern old lady who feels the cold. We regularly had one who gets on, regardless of the route and weather and slams all the windows shut before going back to the front for her copy of the metro then sitting in a priority seat. Not seen her for a while. Our only air conditioned buses were withdrawn several years ago and the air con on them retired several years before. The windows were bolted shut, apart from during the pandemic when they couldn't be shut!
