Prepper stupidity?

Tuxedomaddness · 27/05/2026 09:01

All these people who prep for society breakdown, supply chains broken.

Humans will just break in and steal.your stuff?
If society went down surely it's better to be fit (zombie apocalypse) than have a pantry full of flour and pasta??

I don’t recall people looting and stealing people’s food stocks during Covid?

SurreySenMum26 · 27/05/2026 09:10

How would anyone know you had stuff to break in and steal it?

Tuxedomaddness · 27/05/2026 09:12

If people struggled though , that is exactly what will happen.
No police...if few. I think mumsnetters think if they call 101 they will survive

Well people would just target wealthy neighbourhoods first?

covids very different to a zombie apocalypse. Everyone got paid to stay off work (well most) and have a nice time at home. Wouldn’t happen in a zombie apocalypse the government would collapse in days. That said all these people with stocked pantries, they haven’t even thought about securing their home so they’re not really preppers.

LetsMakeThisMomentLast · 27/05/2026 09:16

Why is it stupidity? Because you don’t do it?

delicioussoo · 27/05/2026 09:17

You’d likely have your throat ripped out within minutes anyway

CypressGrove · 27/05/2026 09:17

That's why peppers have guns though.

Depends what kind of zombie it is, shaun of the dead type zombie or Alpha zombies from 28 years… Grin

I find preppers absolutely fascinating, I love to see the things they prioritise.
i grew up in the 80’s so plenty of ‘after a nuclear war’ conversations with friends.
they all tend to miss the idea that they may have to relocate very quickly.

Exactly! It's like they have a sense of security in their own 'bubble/home'.

Yeah I've spent a disproportionate amount of time making plans for the walking dead type, but I'm not prepared to deal with the fast type!

InterestedDad37 · 27/05/2026 09:23

First thing is to assess if we're dealing with sprinting zombies or shuffling zombies.
With that in mind, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over.

Branleuse · 27/05/2026 09:23

You're just jealous because we have more kidney beans than you do

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 27/05/2026 09:24

I tend to keep lots of food and essentials in stock. Nothing gets wasted and it doesn't cost any more in the long term.

In rare shortages (eg covid and loo rolls/pasta/tinned tomatoes) I have enough. I don't have to brave the queues and there's one family fewer needing to buy the limited stocks.

I'm gradually building up to keeping a couple of weeks worth of food that doesnt need further cooking, for power shortages etc, and water.

I'm not aiming to insure against long term famine/societal breakdown/nuclear war etc. But if more households are a little bit prepared for disruptions, then society as a whole is more resilient.

I’m going to order a case from Amazon now😂😂😂

Somethingbland · 27/05/2026 09:26

You've lost me OP.

I thought this was the province of a few out and out eccentrics.

Don't tell me this the latest Tiktok insanity?

BrownBookshelf · 27/05/2026 09:27

I was under the impression most people did it to have a stock in, so life is easier in the event of eg covid type shortages or Russia playing silly buggers with the national grid for a few days.

Have always kept a decent buffer in but that's probably to do with not having grown up with much. My parents always did it, to insure against a lean week, sudden job loss or whatever.

itsgettingweird · 27/05/2026 09:27

I think MNers think if they call 101 they’ll survive 🤣

I think some people have a personality type that needs them to feel they are always prepared and in control.

Truth is that having 6 bags of flour won’t save you anymore than your neighbour. You may live a little longer but ultimately that may just mean you suffer longer!

I think there’s sensible prepping - torches and batteries etc in case of power cuts and then there’s the obsessive prepping where you spend your life worrying about what may happen rather than enjoying living in the moment. I worry those people may be missing out on what life they could be enjoying just to survive a shit life a little longer than the rest of us.

Tuxedomaddness · 27/05/2026 09:29

The thread was inspired by watching my neighbour bring in another' 26.packs of water.
She said 'just in case'.
In case of what??

As a human ANIMAL.who needs to survive with no resources, we will all kill each other to get the resources and my neighbours 'prepper' house would be easy pickings.

OP posts:
mondaytosunday · 27/05/2026 09:30

You are assuming an apoplectic event? No it’s far more likely another pandemic. I think the preppers in the US are armed though. And the real danger is if utilities go down. No running water or power and things will dissolve into chaos very quickly.

MajorSamanthaCarter · 27/05/2026 09:33

Are you planning to kill your neighbours and steal their goodies?

Larrythecatforpm · 27/05/2026 09:33

Honestly think we have more chance of a giant asteroid hitting us than zombies sadly. Zombies would be so much fun.
That 26 pack of water isn’t going to last long, maybe they are worried about Ebola? At least you know whose house to raid now op. Grin

Hard core preppers have bug out bags ready. And multiple stashes in various places. Although to be honest there appears to be a reasonable overlap between hard core preppers and criminals in my neck of the woods, so the relocation is often driven by running from the police.

SpinelessBastardsAll · 27/05/2026 09:34

Agree, and can you imagine the unmitigated rape/murder of woman and children? I'd rather wonder off to the garage with a hosepipe.
