Does food have this effect on everyone? Or only people with issues

Made shwarma with all the trimmings today for dinner. Including homemade flatbread. Really put the effort in. Asked dh to buy avocado on the way home as I am currently on keto and will only have the chicken with salad and guacamole.

dh came home empty handed. Said the corner shop were out. He walked past a coop and express on his way home from the st. Not to mention being at London Victoria when I sent the text. It really put me in a bad mood as that meant I only had chicken with rocket for my supper. The guac dressing really makes the dish for me.

I plated up for the kids but just didn’t want any in the end. I was so pissed.

Ended up taking myself to McDonald’s. Ate in the car. The meal literally turned my mood around. Like an off switch to the anger. I was thinking literally nothing else can do this for me. Not even a glass of wine.

can food turn everyone’s mood around or only people with food issues/addictions. I wouldn’t necessarily say im addicted but I certainly lean on it when down in the dumps.

Were you hangry? I don’t care much for food and definitely don’t use it at a crutch, but DH is known to thrust a chocolate bar or other convenience food at me if he thinks I’m getting tetchy and 9/10 times it works to turn my mood around.

If I’m angry and not hungry though it does nothing at all.

HScully · 26/05/2026 21:26

You should have just had the flat bread 🤷🏻‍♀️

I love a maccys but you food sounds delicious

Spaghettioverload · 26/05/2026 21:27

I do feel better when I’ve eaten something ‘bad’. This is exactly why you should abandon your strict diet. You could have enjoyed a nice homemade meal including a flatbread. Instead you blew it all for a greasy McDonald’s and were pissed off with your husband for something that is easily done after a long day; forgetting something. This should highlight how daft it is to restrict yourself.

I’m on keto. I have a health condition which means I avoid carbs.

You on keto but had a mcd’s?? Not sure how that works. Sounds like you are punishing yourself by ‘treating’ yourself with carbs…

i think it sounds pretty disordered eating. If you can drive out to get mcd’s you could drive to get an avocado that you state you wanted.

self sabotage - hurting no one but yourself.

Moretan · 26/05/2026 21:29

I am about to get my period so put it down to that. Have found keto actually not too bad. 40 pounds down. 20 to go. I eat a lot of cheese

I can very much be like this if I was really looking forward to something.

If it makes you feel any better I had to go to 4 different supermarkets today and still couldn't get any avocados that weren't rock solid, had to settle for a pot of smashed avocado from Aldi instead. Hope you find something to make your meal more palatable, maybe a nice garlic/lemon/mint/mayo concoction ?

My ex used to do this. In reality he was doing it on purpose because he secretely hated me lol.

If it happened today, i'd just get one avocado delivered by deliveroo - making him pay of course.

MyDuvetDay · 26/05/2026 21:31

Eating fast food tends to have the opposite effect on me

GooseCreekandtheRiver · 26/05/2026 21:31

Nope. Seems very odd to me. I can’t relate.

ShetlandishMum · 26/05/2026 21:31

Tbh it sounds like an overreaction. Sorry.

Lmnop22 · 26/05/2026 21:31

Couldn’t you have just bought an avocado if going to McDs?

Food doesn’t turn off my anger but it does make me less sad 😬

Keep a stock in your freezer for next time.

Octavia64 · 26/05/2026 21:32

If I’m hungry then yes I feel tired and grumpy and food fixes that.

see hangry.

DoAWheelie · 26/05/2026 21:33

I would feel the same but it's not the food that ruined my mood, it would be the lack of care shown by someone who is supposed to love and support me. The food becomes a representation of that so you find yourself rejecting it.

If my OH had done the same, as soon as he realised it was meant to be the main component of my food he would have shot back out the house to the shops and also come back with a nice treat for after dinner (and made sure it was suitable for my current diet).

HScully · 26/05/2026 21:34

Moretan · 26/05/2026 21:30

Thats even more unreasonable, it sounds rubbish.

Moretan · 26/05/2026 21:35

Dh did offer to deliveroo it but tbh I find buying groceries on deliveroo to be such a rip off. Literally cannot justify it. Especially with minimum spend. We got a food shop in today (avocados unavailable)

NoGarlic · 26/05/2026 21:38

Of course being hangry is a thing! No need to connect it with disorders or fast food. You're hungry, your blood sugar's bottomed out, your body's screaming at your brain that there's a big problem.

If you were a wild animal, you'd be attacking your siblings to get at the prey.

limetrees32 · 26/05/2026 21:38

I can be completely inconsolable if denied a fud that I was looking forward to.

Doctordoolittle · 26/05/2026 21:38

Yes I do get like that but I’ve also got a serious and long term eating disorder which for me is definitely related!

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 26/05/2026 21:39

I'm similar. If we go out for food, whether that be a decent meal, or fast food, and is wrong such as the food comes out cold, or my order isn't right, I'll just send it back and ask for a refund on mine. I'll happily sit there while others eat bit once mine has been ballsed up, Im just not interested.

It's not even the fear of (what I generally suspect is mostly unfounded) the food being tampered with for being awkward. If I'm cooking at home and bugger up the recipe for something I really fancy, even if its perfectly edible and the rest of the family happily eat it, I just can't. Mine goes in the bin and I'll either go hungry, or stroppily have toast or cereals a couple of hours later.

It's really weird and I thought it was just me. It's kind of like being hangry, but I dont get angry, I just dont want it and will either eat nothing, or something crap when I'm a little over myself.

PollyBell · 26/05/2026 21:39

I would be a bit annoyed then move on, its food
