Really? She lived with this guy and didn't know? She had a camper van parked on the drive and didn't know he stole the money to buy it?

I don't buy it.

And remember that they will also pay less tax down in England. Bunch of chancers.

True! That will surely have been a factor in the decision of (alleged) complicit in fraudster like NS, after all.

Random unfamous Woman commits horrible violent crime and claims she did it after abuse but without proof, MNer reaction "Poor wee thing, men must have driven her to it. She should get off for sure."

Man commits sneaky white collar crime that amounted to max. £3k/month stolen and frittered it on handcream size purchases and is married to now unpopular politician, MNer reaction: "That childless gormless harpy who must be a secret lesbian with a sham marriage, the wife has to be just as guilty, she full well knew!"

Pffffttttt.....

How many people can you sleep in your jar of handcream 🤣 ?

I voted YABU due to personal experience of this. Not that amount though. My late father embezzled a huge amount of money from the company he worked for. It was explained away as bonuses, overtime etc etc. Very little went on my Mum or the family but there were occasional splurges on us.

My Mum had no idea until the police arrived one morning looking for him. He wasn’t there, he was elsewhere as he often was.

So it’s possible (but only just) that Nicola had no idea. Especially as she earned well herself. In fact because she earned so well you could argue it have been even less obvious. You could also argue that it should have been more obvious to someone like my Mum who had very little and relied on my Dad while she coped with three small children. Splashes of cash were noticeable …as was the fact he often didn’t come home.

He went to prison, Mum finally got a divorce and remarried later on to a man who did the whole Dad thing that my biological Dad did not.

NS was her husband's boss though. So she knew exactly what he earned. She also signed off all his SNP treasury reports. In other words, she was the final check that they were not fraudulent. Though of course, if she and PM would have wanted things to be good governance and no risk of corruption by a wife signing off her husband's accounting, NS would have refused to appoint PM as treasury and he would have refused to accept the position.

Its not really a coincidence that a couple who set up a dodgy arrangement that enabled fraud, went on to commit fraud, and the wife insisting with wide eyed innocence that she had no idea where all the money came from for the expensive things her hubby was flaunting in their home.

Pull the other one.

Her testimony was also questionable in the Alex Salmond affair.

'Mr Salmond has accused officials close to Ms Sturgeon - including her husband Peter Murrell, the SNP's chief executive - of plotting against him. They all deny these claims.'

'a separate inquiry by MSPs has described the government's actions as "deeply flawed", and questioned some of Ms Sturgeon's evidence.'

Well I think the problem is structural. The SNP will nearly always have a leader who demands separation but at the same time negotiates with Westminster. In the end you notice that all the fire goes out of the SNP in Westminster when they send their MPs there, they like London and contrive to stay. They are all TruScots until they sit down on the benches.

I’m sure a lot of their voters don’t mind because they see the SNP as getting a better deal for Scotland. But that’s different from filleting the members account to go to Selfridges.

Murray served as SNP chief executive for more than 20 years, yet starting embezzling party funds within a month of his marriage to Sturgeon. I wouldn’t be surprised if they cooked up the whole thing between them with the agreement he would be the fall guy.

her statements have been written by her top end legal team, that's 100% for sure. I think from what she's said (they've instructed her to say) she/they reckon it's possible to claim there's a firewall between her and her estranged husband and he can get all the blame and she none.

I think that will probably work, in the legal courts, but the court of public opinion is a different matter entirely. Nobody is buying what her legal team are selling, at all.

Normally, I would agree, however the big difference here is that she had access to the accounts and indeed signed them off when the auditors resigned. She did not question these statements, nor why the auditors resigned, nor showed any concern when their own finance committee resigned die to lack of financial transparency. She even went as far as to warn those off from questioning these statements accounts.

Piknik · Yesterday 09:00

Of course she knew. Although I expect that they probably did NOT have this conversation:

Nicola: Are you skimming Pete? Cos camper van?

Peter: I am yes. You are now officially in cahoots with me.

And on that basis, she has convinced herself she 'didn't know'.

I hope they are able to find traces of conversation or movement of money which makes it clear that she did know, and I hope she ends up in jail. There is nothing more deplorable than being in a position of SUCH power and abusing the trust of the benefactors and honest people who put and keep you there.

Self righteous soap-boxing on the news night after night whilst stealing from the hand that feeds you. Vile couple.

I can believe it is possible she didn't know, but whether that's the truth is another question.

You only have to read a few threads on here by wives who have been completely blindsided that their husband is tens of thousands in debt or has been having an affair for 12 years etc.

Quite clearly there have been some severe governance and audit issues in the SNP.

But NS was his boss, and was supposed to sign off SNP accounts.

You seem to have forgotten that she also had responsibilities as leader of the party and that she had blocked investigations when others raised concerns.

It's Sturgeon who now seems to be suggesting that she had a sham marriage.

Surely that is a matter for the police to investigate, not for public opinion to decide that she is guilty...

There are women who lived alongside men who were up to no good (from cheats to serial killers) and had no idea of what they were up to so I reserve judgement until I see evidence.

If she was an accomplice then of course she should face justice.

They have.

I'm not in Scotland but does the First Minister live officially at Bute House in Edinburgh? I know NS always made a big deal about being some humble down to earth wee Scots lassie and all that and living in a semi in Glasgow, but she did have another residence.
When the stories emerged about Alex Salmond, it became evident that his marriage was a sham and he was up to all sorts of shenanigans in Bute House. So Sturgeon and Morrell were possibly living separately for a lot of the time, with the 'modest Glasgow house' being a bit of a front for her 'one of the people' shtick.
