To ask what's the ideal amount of time you like to go away on holiday for

I've just read a post from a MNetter who is going to Egypt for 28 days in January <waves at BG2015 if she sees this> Now I'm sure she'll have a fab time but it got me thinking - what's the maximum time you like being away on holiday?

For me, it's five seven nights. After that, I get homesick and just want my own bed. Anyone else get homesick on holiday?

She’s not taking about the job needing to offer 3 months holiday . The new job suggestion is one where they don’t contact her during her annual leave .

Thank you... exactly what I meant!

I should say though that we don’t tend to do AI/resort type holidays, I think a week would be my maximum as I’d be people’d out. We spend ages researching villas/houses etc in locations where there’s plenty to do nearby but we can also retreat for some peace and privacy. We always hire a car so we can explore, and often split the holiday into different locations too (a week in one place, a week somewhere else for example).

Obeseandashamed · 25/05/2026 08:29

2-3 weeks but we always do multi-centre.

Tickingcrocodile · 25/05/2026 08:31

Two weeks. We always do a week in one location then move somewhere else for the second week though (self-drive in Europe).

Livingthebestlife · 25/05/2026 08:41

Ideally 4 weeks, we normally do 2 weeks we go to Florida so loads to do each day never get bored although we still don't get enough time to do everything we want. We've done 3 weeks and it was great but DH can't always get 3 weeks together from work . We've done 2 weeks in other countries when kids were younger and that just flew in. Couldn't do less than 2 weeks I'd feel like I've only just arrived and leaving again. Never miss home I always get a bit down when I come home.

OddBoots · 25/05/2026 08:47

I love my home so 4-5 nights away Monday to Friday, all active time seeing sights and doing activities - then home for another week of leave off work chilling out and pottering about to relax and reflect before going back to work.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 25/05/2026 09:01

3, 10 or 21+

Between 3 and 10 is annoying to me - enough to mess with your routine, but not enough to get stuck into the new place. Ditto less than three weeks if you're going far/travelling around.

I quite like a multi-centre holiday of 4-5 nights in a city the 4-5 nights by the beach.

coneyislandoldspot · 25/05/2026 09:03

It depends where.

A city break? 4 nights - land late on the first day so you don’t have a rush getting to the airport, fly late afternoon home so that you have the morning in the city.

A beach break? 2 weeks.

Anything else? About ten days.

hollystar500 · 25/05/2026 09:05

With my kids? Four nights max before my hair starts to fall out and my watch beeps at me to say my heart rate is at a dangerous level

Natsku · 25/05/2026 09:05

3 weeks absolute minimum for holiday abroad, preferably more. Best holiday was almost 6 weeks which was long enough to start to want to be home again.
Off on a 3.5 week holiday to the UK next week and that's still not enough time for everything we want to do.

Domestic holiday doesn't need to be so long, we sometimes go up to Lapland for about a week and that's quite good - I'd like to stay longer but we share a house with my uncle and his family and one bathroom for 8 or so people is not fun after a week!

Laurmolonlabe · 25/05/2026 09:09

14 nights or 20 long haul- we tried 3 weeks for our usual summer holiday- it was great while we were there , but really difficult getting back into the swing of things on return (that was when we both worked full time) now we are mostly retired I think 3 weeks or even longer would be fine.

We are going for 11 nights. We did 11 last year and it was perfect. 14 nights mean we have to go straight back to work when we get home which I hate. 7 nights isn't really long enough for our main holiday although I do shorter trips throughout the year. 3-4 nights for a city break.

TutTutTutSigh · 25/05/2026 09:22

My job doesn't lend itself to long breaks so the most I've done is 10 nights. Mostly 4-7 nights but quite often to break up the year. Already looking forward to retirement in about 25 years!!

PartyQuestion30th · 25/05/2026 09:25

I like it all! Had a fab 5 weeks off in my 30s to go to Peru, saw loads , could properly relax as well as see things and travel.

took 3 weeks off a couple of years ago for Japan, but it made the rest of the year. Tight leave wise. Can’t wait for retirement….but we do have a dog so can only really go away for 2 weeks as she stays with family and that’s their limit now.

don’t really get homesick.

boredwfh · 25/05/2026 09:32

I went away for 4 weeks once, it was great, could really settle into it! I’d say depends on the holiday. All inclusive l, around 10 days. If we’re moving around, doing long haul then 2-3 weeks.

snoopydoopydo · 25/05/2026 09:42

It depends where we are going and what we are doing. If we are moving around to different places, 3 weeks is usually fine. A villa in Europe, 10 days always feels about right and 3 nights usually for a city break.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 25/05/2026 09:55

About 10 days ish with the kids before it gets too much.

A week doesn’t feel enough and 2 weeks can be too much. We did 12 days last year and I was very ready to get home.

DS7 has autism and adhd and travelling, new environments, new routine etc is very hard for him and requires lots of support.

thornbury · 25/05/2026 10:02

DH has insisted on 17 nights our last two long holidays. 10-12 in one resort is enough for me. If we were going to different places I would not mind a longer trip.

“Insisted” ?

5128gap · 25/05/2026 10:10

Depends where I'm going. Some destinations I've seen and experienced enough after 3 or 4 days (Marrakech). Other places I'd want a month (Thailand).

ThreeDaysinJune · 25/05/2026 12:48

The difference for me is that I'm retired, so if I'm sitting at home in January with awful weather outside, cold, bleak and miserable - why not sit in a cafe somewhere warm, lie on a sunbed, go for a walk in my shorts and a thin cardigan

You inspired the thread @BG2015 😊We're a few years off retirement and I would find January in the UK a challenge too. Hope you enjoy Thailand and Egypt.

About 3-4 nights. I’m a short break sort of person. A few weeks if long haul, but that’s quite a lot of work with children.
