To ask what's the ideal amount of time you like to go away on holiday for

I've just read a post from a MNetter who is going to Egypt for 28 days in January <waves at BG2015 if she sees this> Now I'm sure she'll have a fab time but it got me thinking - what's the maximum time you like being away on holiday?

For me, it's five seven nights. After that, I get homesick and just want my own bed. Anyone else get homesick on holiday?

As long as possible!
Most of my holidays are a week due to cost, occasionally I manage 2 weeks, this year I’ve booked 3 weeks which I’ve never done before

NoGarlic · 25/05/2026 05:15

Also three weeks minimum.

I like to do all the standard holiday things - beach, sights, trips - and also to mooch around the locality, getting a feel for how life works there and learning a few things. I like to adopt a bar/café as my base, so I get to know the staff and regulars. Takes at least three weeks, longer is better 😎

HelenHywater · 25/05/2026 05:16

Three weeks is the best for me (well I'd go for 4, 5, 6 too actually) but a minimum of 3. I generally go long haul and usually travel around though, so I'm not sure what I'd want for a single resort holiday.

For me, a week isn't quite long enough, two weeks is a bit too long. Ten days is perfect.

This. I take a while to relax so with a 7 day break, I feel that I’m just getting into holiday mode when it’s time to go home again. Two weeks can be just that little bit too long.

3 or 4 days. But I quite like a city break and I like short breaks several times a year, any longer and I just want to go home.

Me too. Maybe five nights max.

muddyford · 25/05/2026 06:26

I had three weeks in Norfolk for my 60th, mid-winter, and it was absolute bliss. Even had heavy snow. So three weeks for me.

AmazingGreatAunt · 25/05/2026 06:29

Long haul at least 3 weeks. I don't really do any other kinds of holiday.

hattie43 · 25/05/2026 06:30

At the moment two weeks is the limit where I start to miss my dogs .

Ineffable23 · 25/05/2026 06:31

I think this depends. If I'm moving round and changing hotel/airbnb I run out of energy and want my own bed after about 12 nights. I haven't ever done longer than a week ish in one place but generally I feel like I'm settling in nicely by then so maybe I'd actually want to go away for a month.

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 25/05/2026 06:36

Realistically, 10 days but in a perfect world where money was no object, we didn’t have to work and the dog could come with us, 27th December-1st April, somewhere hot every year.

holjam · 25/05/2026 06:41

10 days for a sun holiday, 3-4 days for a city break.

Fraughtmum · 25/05/2026 06:41

5 days
I dont do beach holidays but love city breaks or the countryside. We go away every month so its perfect

gatorlizzie · 25/05/2026 06:43

3 weeks

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 25/05/2026 06:44

Only do UK holidays, but 2 weeks is really my 'minimum' if the whole family is going.By the time dogs, children and husband are packed into the cars, I need two weeks to recover 😳

Five nights before I miss the cats too much for me.

We tend to fly out early in the morning so can do lunch and beach on the first day. Then come back in the evening on the last day so have a good 5.5 days of actual holiday as I don't need several days to relax before I can enjoy the holiday, that starts as soon as I get through security at the airport.

mindfulmoaning · 25/05/2026 06:48

I actually like five or six nights if Europe and no more than 11 anywhere. Although far east I’ve done 14 but I like being home

Love the 3 months idea.

You need a new job though. That's ridiculous

I hope that’s sarcastic… Why on earth would anyone in any role be able to take 3 months straight off work and it not be considered a sabbatical ?!

I can deal with a new place for a couple of months but it stops feeling like a holiday after a couple of weeks and starts to feel more like a new home if that makes sense. I think 2 weeks is the sweet spot.

PurBal · 25/05/2026 06:57

It totally depends on the holiday and the flight time. Fly and flop: 4/5 nights is fine. Single location with lots of self exploring: 7-10 days. Dual centre 10-14 days. We’re doing Kenya this year (will include safari) for 21 nights, but could have done 14 days. We also plan on taking the children interrailing at some point and less than 2 weeks would be daft due to the number of proposed stops.

She’s not taking about the job needing to offer 3 months holiday . The new job suggestion is one where they don’t contact her during her annual leave .

ToffeeCrabApple · 25/05/2026 07:01

10 days is fine

I have a really good home life that I love. I got abroad to see interesting places, not to "escape".

Ipsevenenabibas · 25/05/2026 07:07

When I was younger I wouldn't feel rested unless I spent at least 2 weeks away. But I've noticed as I'm getting older that I don't like being away that long any more and I get homesick after 4 to 7 nights!!! Short breaks regularly are the ideal for me now!

Lincslady53 · 25/05/2026 07:08

When working, for the last 30 years self employed, it was difficult to take more than a week off, but we did manage one week away most years. Since retiring we have made our main holiday 2 weeks, love it. The last few days I find are a few days of bliss. We have done everything we wanted, so its 3 days of relaxation, wandering into the town, drinks, eats no pressure to do anything. But, last year in Greece it got v hot, and DHs skin has not recovered, even with strong steroid creams. So tomorrow we are going to Portugal for 11 nights, hopefully the happy medium, but we are going into a heatwave, so we shall see. We take other holidays, driving in France or Ireland and the length depends on flight prices. Just pick the cheapest flight options which is often about 10 days.

HedgehogShoes · 25/05/2026 07:10

5 days is my ideal. Love a Monday - Friday trip because then you still get the weekend to unwind at home, after travelling before going back to work.

PersephoneParlormaid · 25/05/2026 07:12

I could do two weeks for long haul but otherwise, a week is enough for me.

Squirrelchops1 · 25/05/2026 07:15

I've done:
2 x 6 weeks
3 × 4 weeks
Lots of x 3 weeks, 2 weeks and 1 week

The above 2 weeks have always included travelling about either in our van or we've been long haul. I don't know if I'd cope in 1 place for that long. There really is a shift in how you feel once you get beyond 3 weeks though
6 is never enough though lol.

We dont tend to go under a week anywhere nowadays.
