To ask what's the ideal amount of time you like to go away on holiday for

I've just read a post from a MNetter who is going to Egypt for 28 days in January <waves at BG2015 if she sees this> Now I'm sure she'll have a fab time but it got me thinking - what's the maximum time you like being away on holiday?

For me, it's five seven nights. After that, I get homesick and just want my own bed. Anyone else get homesick on holiday?

Reading a few more posts, one of my favourite holidays was a couple of years ago. A week in an apartment in Nerja. We then went to Mijas by local buses, which was a big if fun, into Malaga then find the right bus out. Just one night in the centre of Mijas in a lovely, small boutique hotel in an old town house, then the last few days in a beach hotel , which should have been in Benalmadina, but we got bumped out and put in an AI hotel in Torremolinos. Which worked out well and gave us a bit of variation. All 3 places were chosen to relive some earlier holiday memories, so a bit of nostalgia in the mix.

Ideally, I'd like to go away for 10 nights. I find a week passes by in a flash, but two weeks often ends up dragging on - though I think it depends who you go with. I've generally been away with friends who I wouldn't normally see for that long in one go!

Six days. Also need a day off before and two after. I did three weeks earlier this year and it was too much.
I’m retiring soon though so am hoping that increases my being away from home stamina!

Well so far in my life I’ve have enjoyed shorter breaks more than longer ones.

im not sure why exactly, but we arnt a rich family, and I think when we go off on short weekends away, we tend to have a plan (booked and paid for this visit or trip ) that keeps us really busy we have a nice few days and come home.

compared to an abroad holiday, we might have one trip booked in the week and the rest beach / pool days to keep cost down and by the end of the week I’m counting down the days and wishing I had put the money towards my new kitchen

I went away for 3 weeks for honeymoon and it was maybe a bit much. It was a hotel kind of holiday (and lots of traveling around) and I just got so sick of having to order food in restaurants - just wanted to be able to graze on a weird snack from the fridge.

But we do try to go on farther afield holidays every few years (Asia etc) so for those 2 weeks is really the minimum.

For Europe, 5-10 days, depending on the hol, in this stage of life. Maybe I’ll be up for some longer ones later!

Recently did 2 weeks in Thailand, not enough! We did 3 months in Kenya last year, both DH and I work remotely. We managed to see a lot and take lot time, even squeezed in Zanzibar too. We want to go back to Thailand and do 3 months, not strictly a holiday I know. However if we had the money we would not even work remotely and 3 months would be ideal holiday. We love exploring at a steady pace.

It more depends on the location rather than the holiday itself.

NZ or AUS - 6 weeks minimum
SA - 4 weeks
Spain / Portugal / Greece - 1 week
Dubai - 1 week
Thailand - 4 weeks
City Breaks - 3/4 nights
Caribbean/ Mauritius / Maldives - 2 weeks
NYC - 5 nights

As long as possible
with my husband, with my mother 2 night max, with the kids and no husband 5 -7 days

Five nights maximum. I tend to travel solo which I love, but I do start to miss home and get a bit bored with my own company if I am away for any longer.

Definitely a fan of the shorter holiday. For a start I find the childcare/summer hols works better if I take 10-12 days in the form of a week away plus several long weekends/a midweek city break. Breaks it up more. But secondly I struggle a bit with travelling - all the planning and decision-making falls on me and it's not all that relaxing.

It depends where it is and how much there is to do but 1-2 weeks maximum. I like to go on holiday but I don't like to be away too long.

9 or 10 days is my sweet spot. 2 weeks in one place I get bored.

A lot of travelling or variety I'd go for 3 weeks eg disney or interrailing.

I'd like to go for months just set off and go from place to place if I had unlimited funds but I'd set up bases and chill in various cities. I couldn't just keep moving. Maybe I should go by yacht then I'd have a base.

We quite often do 2.5 weeks to Florida (NOT Disney, that’s our idea of hell) and 10 days to the Caribbean. If it’s a uk break, 7 nights is plenty.

A week if local or beach/resort type holiday. Longer if a more adventurous holiday but by 2 weeks I usually can't wait to get home.

DH and I are planning a big European holiday (from Australia) when our youngest finishes school but we would need to have at least 3-4 weeks to make the airfares and flight times worth it. I do wonder how I will go on a holiday that long as much as I would like to see a whole lot of countries I haven't been to.

So much will depend on stage of life won’t it? DH couldn’t have 4 weeks off in a block for one. Need to spread time off with dc

Hotel 2 weeks is a bit much for me so 7-10 days suit.
Family have holiday home & have done 4 wks there but that’s like being at home, we have family friends etc

Depends what kind of holiday. For an all inclusive pool holiday, my limit is about four nights (arrive early, leave late so 3 full days and two halves).

For a city break, I’d do between 3 and 5 days, depending on the city and how much walking we would be doing. I used to do a week or more tying together two cities but these days I’d rather just do two separate shorter trips.

Long haul trips would be 10-14 days to make it worthwhile. But our long haul trips would be ones with lots to do so I wouldn’t be bored!

We don’t go away more than 7 nights at a time as DH is self employed and would miss the dog too much! I’ve got used to that and we even managed a couple of long haul city breaks pre kids! I’m hoping I can tempt him away for a bit longer at some point but probably 10 nights max.

9 nights is my optimum. Two weekends plus a week in the middle - it makes the most of a week off work, and I find I can properly relax for the last couple of days as I've probably done most of the things I wanted to by then. I would miss the cats too much for any longer and we don't really like travelling long haul anyway.

We're also going to Thailand for a month later in the year.

The difference for me is that I'm retired, so if I'm sitting at home in January with awful weather outside, cold, bleak and miserable - why not sit in a cafe somewhere warm, lie on a sunbed, go for a walk in my shorts and a thin cardigan.

My parents are big cruisers and have often gone on 61 night cruises in early January and not come back until March!

(However, I've never been away for more than 2 weeks so I may hate it)

We go for a week, been for two when if travelled further (we don’t do this anymore) but by the far best holiday we had was a 4night break in Tenerife, felt like we had had a holiday, but not too long. We were abit will it be worth it when we booked it, but would definitely do a short trip again. I am always ready to come home, I can honestly say I have never felt sorry to leave anywhere.

As long as I can TBH. I have no real desire to get back to my own bed! We are going away for 2 weeks in July and I already know I won’t be ready to come home.
