Really depressed I didn’t just go on Ozempic - only maintained for a year

I don’t know I really need a rant.

I feel really angry and upset at myself. To the point i just want to scream/cry.

Last year i lost 55 pounds without glp 1s. I totally cut out carbs (well I’d eat sweet potatoes if absolutely necessary). And just made an effort not to use food as a crutch. It worked fairly well as the weight came off.

I decided I needed more moderation. The no carb thing was just making me have cravings. So I started eating jackets, pasta salads etc. Not ideal as I have pcos but I try to be sensible. Ie having cooled down pasta to make it resistant or whatever. Not smothering pasta in cheese etc.

Its meant my weight loss has completely stalled. I’m happy that I’ve not gained all the weight back. But still. I’ve been eating in moderation for a year and not lost weight! I can’t deny this anger is compounded by the fact I saw my friend for lunch today. She’s lost 5 stone in 5 months using Mounjaro.

I just want to weep. I wish I just started on Ozempic or similar. I’m at my goal weight but to be honest I’d love another stone off. I don’t know why I didn’t go
on a glp 1. I just knew in my heart that my weight was not “inexplicable”. I was eating far too much out of boredom.

Just another sunny day wasted hating myself even though I’ve tried 😢

I’ve been going to the gym too. How pathetic to be this mindful and to not have lost any weight.

The level of judgement and ignorance on here about WLIs is wild 🙄. I’ve been on MJ for a year, I’ve had to make LOADS of lifestyle changes and I’ve only lost 3 1/2 stone so far. It’s not the magic bullet you all think it is. Tiresome.

historyismything82 · 24/05/2026 16:35

Sorry just seen your BMI is in the healthy range. Ignore my previous post please. You can't be overweight, surely? I bet you are lovely, stop comparing yourself to others.

Italiangreyhound · 24/05/2026 16:36

It's fine to feel upset etc BUT it really doesn't matter in the long run how you lose the weight as long as you maintain the weight loss, which you have done.

You could go on Mounjarro now if you wished to.

I am on Mounjarro for Diabtes and have lost virtually nothing, it doesn't work for everyone.

It's just my opinon but in your shoes I would try and focus on your self, your own achievements, your mental health, feeling good in your own skin.

I have dabbled with strength training. It’s highly recommended for women with pcos. I use weights and the machines and just follow what I see on tik tok. Ie i follow a routine for arms for beginners using 2kg weights. But not dead lifting or anything like that. I am trying to build myself to that point. I was very very unfit prior to weight loss.

I appreciate the advice though and it’s definitely something I need to actually commit to. Thank you x

If you've been doing the gym for a while, and nothing is (or doesn't seem to be) happening, it would be well worth investing in some personal-trainer sessions - someone who'll listen to what you want to achieve and tailor routines for you to try and get there. Equally, if what you're hoping for isn't achieveable, a PT will be able to talk you through what is/isn't possible. A good PT will also be able to discuss how to eat what, and when, and (importantly) working with one will help you with self-confidence, and perhaps a reframing of how you see yourself.

Big congratulations on what you've achieved by yourself so far.

hihelenhi · 24/05/2026 16:37

You have done it the healthy way. I'd be super proud of yourself, stop comparing (I know it's easier said than done) and remember that weight loss and health is a long game, not just for this summer.

I keep hearing so many stories from friends about people they know who are on injections, looking yes, thin, but also really unwell, with terrible brittle hair and more than one having gall bladder issues. We don't know what the long term effects will be. FAR better to do it naturally.

I'd be focusing on weight training, as others have said. Should help you minimise those wobbly bits, especially at your age, AND maybe help you get the last of it off.

Italiangreyhound · 24/05/2026 16:38

Sorry, should say ...You could go on Mounjarro now if you wished to- although if you are a healthy weight now you probably would not be able to get it.

Well done on the weight loss.

AddledPeacock · 24/05/2026 16:39

Try strength training to change your body shape. You will need to do more than 2kg weights, that isn’t going to do anything. Either research it properly or better still use the money you would have spent on WLI on a PT and build some good habits.

VeganSteakAndFries · 24/05/2026 16:41

Wobbly bits can be toned op. You have done brilliantly. Don’t be so down on yourself!
Get a PT - they are lifechanging 🏋🏻‍♀️

somanychristmaslights · 24/05/2026 16:41

Up the strength training! For example, if you’re doing bicep curls for 12 reps, rep 10,11 and 12 should have you pulling faces and even weird noises 🤣. Then you know it’s heavy enough.
also, do you calorie count? If your weight is staying the same, you’re in maintenance mode. You need to reduce calories only slightly and the weight will move again.

Beachtastic · 24/05/2026 16:42

Neade · 24/05/2026 15:35

I’m 137 pounds. I’d love to be 120. My arms and stomach just look awful uncovered

...so what you need is not more dieting, or Mounjaro. You have done the hard bit, now you just need to tone up!

Look up Juice and Toya on YouTube - they have plenty of beginners routines. Or Dansique or Move with Nicole for Pilates if you prefer something more elegant 😁

Congratulations on an absolutely phenomenal achievement. You should be SO proud of yourself. Now for the next step, once you get into some kind of movement you enjoy you'll never look back!

Bridesmaidorexfriend · 24/05/2026 16:42

You just need to enjoy your weight loss. You will never be completely happy, there will always be something. And if you cut back calories even more and lose more weight then it’s going to be harder to maintain that anyway. Just be happy that you’ve maintained that original loss, My DW lost 7 stone using wli, she came off as we were TTC, she regained 2.5stone when pregnant and we had a miscarriage, and she looks back at those pics and is so sad that she couldn’t recognise how thin she was when she was at her lowest.

I’m at the gym 4-5 times a week. I do cardio for an hour (treadmill/bike/rowing) and try to tone arms/legs/whatever by following an online workout. Nothing super intense. Ie arm workouts I only use 2kg weights. I probably need to up this.

Really agree with others here ditch the cardio and start lifting heavy instead it’s a game changer.
You don’t need to lose more weight just to switch some fat for muscle which you are in an ideal place to do.

You don’t need an hour of cardio 4x a week. Switch at least two of those sessions or even 3 to proper full body weight training squats, deadlifts, bench press and you will get so much better results for less effort and boredom. Pay for a PT to show you the ropes: a lot of gyms have a 6 weeks offer.

If you commit to this you’ll see lots of progress within a few months and muscle is metabolically active so it burns more calories even at rest which will mean your maintenance calories can be more/ you’ll lose weight at your current maintenance.

I started lifting heavy weights 5 or 6 years ago in my 40s and especially at the start the benefits were so noticeable vs the cardio based stuff I had been doing. I credit it with helping me manage menopause too.

Neade · 24/05/2026 15:36

I’m pissed i still can’t enjoy a sunny day without feeling self conscious even though I’ve lost weight in a sensible fashion which isn’t getting me anywhere now. I’m so exhausted with my body

Edited

Don't ruin your one life with this shit.

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 24/05/2026 16:44

You’re a healthy weight. You could wear skimpy clothes even if you weren’t, but the fact that you are says that if you did no one would blink an eye. You’d be just another slim person wearing summer clothes. You not wanting to is an issue with your mind, not your body.

Appleandcidergravy · 24/05/2026 16:45

I would ignore the scales and use a tape measure. If you have been doing cardio and light weights your body composition is likely to have changes slightly- take photos, take measures, up the weights and see where you are in a few months. Seriously heavy squats and deadlifts is what helps me loose weight with boxing sprint intervals more than any cardio- and I do at least 20,000 steps a day.....

Also the inane ill-informed burbling about long term effects, the stuff has been in use for decades!

Socialclimber12 · 24/05/2026 16:47

I totally get where you are coming from, you have lost the weight all on your own but now you are plateauing there’s no help available. If you had been on mounjaro you could have continued at your current BMI

Overtheatlantic · 24/05/2026 16:47

Excellent. A WLI bashing thread. Too bad about your wobbly arms.

Shrinkhole · 24/05/2026 16:48

It is also true that you need to fix your head. I dunno how to do that as I’ve never succeeded!

There’s lots of photos of me where I thought I looked really shit at the time to the point of I could have cried and I look back now and I look fine, normal, good even. I would have been a lot happier over my life time if I cracked how to accept my body.

Agreed. All the “well done for being able to lose weight normally” 🙄 More fucking judgement. People need to educate themselves - and celebrities abusing this medication is not helping 🙄

Why do you think going on ozempic would have got you to your goal weight or that you would be able to maintain it if you did?? I used GLP1 and I'm a stone off my ideal weight and I can't lose the last stone, and I'm spending £200 a month to maintain it. Your thought process is very strange.

Pyjamatimenow · 24/05/2026 16:54

If it makes you feel better, I lost three stone on Mounjaro, taking my weight down to bmi 20ish. I’ve now gained a stone back despite being still on the highest dose of the drug.

Justbreathagain · 24/05/2026 16:54

OP have you thought that it doesn't matter what weight you get to you won't be happy so that extra stone might not fix your problem? Your at your goal weight just enjoy yourself, you need to be kind to yourself. Doing it through lifestyle is a massive achievement and I would be giving myself a pat on the back not punishing myself. You have maintained your weight included carbs which is great. How would you feel if you were not comparing yourself to your friend? Or if your friend had side effects. Dont judge yourself against other people.

elfendom1 · 24/05/2026 16:55

WallaceinAnderland · 24/05/2026 15:39

When people make posts like this it makes me think they are really judgey.

Do you sit and look at other women on the beach, or your neighbours, or your friends even and think, wow they've got wobbly bits, they should really cover up their arms, they shouldn't be wearing that, etc?

Do you do that to other women OP?

What a weird way of twisting the conversation. Have you nothing better to do?

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 24/05/2026 16:55

Neade · 24/05/2026 15:39

Luckily I don’t have loose skin (only 31). I just have a layer of fat that won’t budge. Wish I could be in a skimpy top like everyone else.

Women are supposed to have a healthy layer of fat.

There's no point in comparing yourself to other body types, because we all hold fat differently.

I have been lean before, in my youth, when I was reckless and resorted to using steroids and growth hormone without fully understanding the side effects and I liked certain bits of my body more but it made me hate other bits of my body more too.

One example was my mons pubis area. It had no fat or padding, and it made me super obsessed with it making my genitals look weird and out of proportion. It made my bum disappear.

I am now obese and I have come to accept that there's no weight I'd be happy with how my body looks, so my goal isn't looks, it is health.

I can promise you nobody looks at your body the way you do and criticises you for it. It's hard to see when you feel so self conscious but you need to practice some self love instead.
