Judge lets three boy rapist go free with no jail time

The judge said he wanted to avoid the boys attracting a criminal record so early in life. Is it so unreasonable to think that they should have thought of that before they committed the crime ? Rape/sexual assault, is up 10% according to national statistics. With sentences like these, reflecting the clear misogyny within the judiciary , is it any wonder ?

Thoughts ?

I feel that my hours of mindless Mumsnetting finally became worthwhile when someone posted about this a few days ago and said that we (ie, anyone) could ask for a review of this case as "unduly lenient". I think it has gained traction since then. I certainly put forward a request to have this reviewed and I know lots of other people have. I didn't even know that was a "thing", to be honest. Nicholas Rowland is a disgusting human being, based on this case. I sincerely hope he doesn't have daughters. Or sons. I wouldn't want to be him right now. I wouldn't want to be associated with him in any way.

How do you do this?

PeachOctopus · 24/05/2026 15:29

Completely unreasonable to practically legalise gang rape, what message does this send?

One that the future of young males and the notion that they shouldn’t have a criminal conviction at such a young age is given far more weight in law than the consequences to their female victims. The fact that these young boys are vicious sex offenders and have ruined the lives of two other innocent young girls seems to count for nothing. Misogyny of the most disgusting type is alive and well within the judiciary.

Yes, it is actually horrifying.

OneTealShaker · 24/05/2026 16:20

Unfortunately the judiciary is full of people like this judge. That’s why people are losing faith in the justice system. They are more interested in wokery and pushing their left wing political agenda rather than giving a toss about the victims.

Wonder if these judge will suffer any consequences for being a rape apologist.

The other thing that the judge seems to fail to take into account of these "very young" boys (who will be adults in the blink of an eye but anyway) is that a very young girl can potentially concieve as a result of rape and then have to have an additional set of awful challenges ahead, which would heap a world of adulthood on her. But obviously its these young boys that he is impressed by their behaviour in court. He feels that they've been through enough. Of course he does.

The imbalance is insane.

I keep shaking my head when I think about it.

There should be no male judge involved in a rape case where the victim is a girl. He doesn't have female body.

And if he has daughters shame on him. He lets men and women down but most of all girls.

Hamserfan · 24/05/2026 12:35

Didn’t want to criminalise them?! But it is a crime and they are above the age of criminal responsibility. How far does one take this? If one of the victims decided to stab one of the rapiers would they avoid criminalising her too? BONKERS

So old enough to vote at 16, apparently, but not to face consequences for horrific crimes. Make it make sense.

There is now a note on the website saying not to report this case, unless linked to it, as it has been reported so many times.

It’s absolutely horrific. I’m glad that the BBC have centred the voice of one of the victim’s today. I’m sure it’s awful for her, but people need to know about this injustice. I have so much respect for her speaking out like this.

We don't know their names do we? The rapists names?

Nogimachi · 24/05/2026 16:51

This is being reviewed

TeenLifeMum · 24/05/2026 16:52

I’m beyond angry. It’s essentially a “boys will be boys” ruling! I have 3 teenage girls and I was raped at 19. I never reported it because of this kind of thing. I’m sad things haven’t changed.

She’s so brave. Often victims understandably don’t feel up to this and the story centres on the perpetrators.

Girls and women saying how it makes them feel is incredibly hard but powerful.

I don't know if judges can be struck off as in healthcare but they should be.

There's not enough transparency about the regulation of judges.

Who over sees their work? Do they have supervision - as in like clinical supervision where they have a peer or senior appraise their processes, do they do CPD?

It seems Victorian the way they rule in an almost unchallenged, monarchal process. There is so little light shone on the (mostly male: 70% irrc) judges who are making these decisions.

PropertyD · 24/05/2026 17:06

It’s truly disgusting. The boys were from the travelling community where getting married very young is the norm. And of course they played the ADHD card and the intelligence marking. You really couldn’t make this up.

Shame on the judge. What if had been their daughter or do they think it would NEVER happen to someone that moved in their circles.

And they pleaded NOT GUILTY. Where are their parents in this too?

thenightsky · 24/05/2026 17:09

And they pleaded NOT GUILTY

How on earth could they do that when they'd actually filmed themselves committing this crime??

Thiswasanescapeplan · 24/05/2026 17:10

Cultural nonsense shouldn't come into it.

It's like they learned nothing from the northern grooming gangs.

It's either against the law, or it's not. Not some people have a different law.

Whether they marry at 16 still can't be an excuse for raping at 15

mumumental · 24/05/2026 17:11

I think that those boys do need intensive therapy and they should get whatever punishment will ensure it, in order to try to minimise future risk. Will youth prison offer that? I don’t know, as I haven’t the expertise. They probably do need some custody time as an example, but trying very hard to change their attitude is the main thing.

Viviennemary · 24/05/2026 17:13

Raped at knife point and they got away with it. It's beyond shocking. Those girls will be tramatised for the rest of their lives. Hopefully their sentence will be changed to a more appropriate one. Like 5 years minimum custodial.

Lahsania · 24/05/2026 17:13

I think the judge should be struck off. There should be repercussions for being in a responsible position, yet clearly negligently incompetent.

Northermcharn · 24/05/2026 17:14

Judge struck off. Rapists 10 years each.

PropertyD · 24/05/2026 17:15

So potentially they serve some time and then go back into the travelling community.

I will be honest and think they are very very unlikely to be upstanding citizens ever. I wonder if the judge was so woke he didn’t want to be seen as ‘picking’ on them.

Where they will be really hard to trace once they reach adulthood.

Intensive therapy and a tag and curfew might be a start.

No, but plenty of people have reported just describing the case. Anyway, it’s under review now. I just hope justice prevails for the girls and the safety of all girls.

thenightsky · 24/05/2026 17:09

And they pleaded NOT GUILTY

This is what I can’t figure out. They subjected the girls to rape at knifepoint, degrading acts and what must have been abject terror, and filmed it all for their own viewing pleasure. Then pleaded not guilty, thereby subjecting the girls and their families to the horror of a trial. And despite all of this the judge didn’t want them to have a criminal record at so young an age, and praised them for their good behaviour during the proceedings. What exactly were the mitigating circumstances here ? That they were young ? Not too young to know what they were doing. That allegedly two of them have learning difficulties - didnt stop them from engaging though did it, so again, they must have known what they were doing. It’s about time there was root and branch reform of the judiciary and the application of law if this is the best we can do in the 21st Century.
