To think that cast for dislocated wrist might be off in 4 weeks?

Hi all, 14 year old dislocated his wrist during the week. We are going on holidays in 4 weeks. Right now they are saying 4 weeks for the cast but I know this is subject to change.
The fracture clinic in our local hospital is held weekly on a Thurs. We are due to fly early on the Thursday. AIBU to think there's a chance we could go? That they could remove a day early maybe in A&E? Stressed out. He was due to go on school trip next week which he cant go on. I dont want to have to cancel family holiday also 😢

You could ask? If not are you anywhere near London? Just you could maybe try the paediatric A&E at the Portland to see if they can remove the cast to swap for a splint the day before you go. You’d have to pay for it and book an appointment but potentially worth it if it saves his holiday!

Surely, you don’t have to cancel a holiday just because he’s got a cast on. 🥴 My dd had an actual complex fracture and honestly, even for that, I don’t think she had the cast on more than 4 weeks or so. It happened the day before summer holidays started and it definitely came off during the summer holidays. It didn’t stop us going on holiday, going swimming, doing all the same things we’d always do. She just had to be a bit mindful of not getting it wet (which is easy enough to do in a waterproof sleeve and just being a bit careful). If you want it off though, I’d just stay on top of them for an appointment or pay to have it removed privately.

Oh really, we were told no swimming even with a waterproof sleeve. He is using that for showers but we were told couldnt rely on for pool. Also beach, sand etc. If we could switch for a splint that would be great. We are in Ireland. Its private healthcare so shouldn't be an issue that way.

Would it not be better for him to keep it on? No idea if it causes harm to keep them on longer but 14 year old are not known for being sensible, particularly on holiday, it might actually be better to keep it on to give it a bit more protection.

Just the pool and beach, sand etc also its very hot on him even in Ireland today at 20 degrees. I think we would rather reschedule the holiday if cast wont be off in time nut obviously that will incur charges
