AIBU to say there is more to hot weather food than salads?

It’s going to be hot next few days.
Just to let you know that there are more foods to eat than just salad and BBQs. Do people in hot countries eat salads and BBQs all the time? No they don’t.

Also you don’t need lettuce to have a salad.

Some nice bread, cooked meats, smoked salmon, jars of pickled veg, cheese, those ready made Spanish omelettes etc.

But what about ice cream?

Seeline · 21/05/2026 10:29

I don't mind eating hot food - but I hate slaving over the cooker in hot weather. So quick grilled/fried meat and fish with a variety of salads (and no, they don't all have lettuce).

WhistPie · 21/05/2026 10:30

Ready-made omelette? Dear god, what has this site become?

The remains of last Sunday's roast chicken, cold, should suffice.

Glitterbiscuits · 21/05/2026 10:30

Thanks Nigella.

OFiddleDeeDee · 21/05/2026 10:32

If anyone can tell me where to actually find a salad in the UK that actually consists of more than one salad leaf and half of a tomato, I would be impressed.

DoAWheelie · 21/05/2026 10:40

I tend to stick to things I can cook in an air fryer during summer as it doesn't generate the same amount of excess heat as an oven or hob.

I still do my Sunday roasts but served with garlic and herb infused butter instead of gravy as gravy feels weird in summer.

corkscissorschalk · 21/05/2026 10:42

You obviously aren’t unreasonable to say that there’s more to summer food than salads, but you definitely are unreasonable to promote a “ready made” Spanish omelette.

Gigglegiggle · 21/05/2026 10:43

So no to salads & BBQs, yes to picky bits?

Got it.

This is why we need the 😄 emoji

I offer, for the table, drained tuna (brine, not oil) mixed with tinned white beans, sliced red pepper, splash of olive oil, squeeze of lemon juice, ground black pepper over the top, lots of fresh coriander. Fresh bread to accompany/mop it up with.
(I also bung raw garlic and ginger in too, but you need an asbestos-lined mouth and access to toothbrushes and mouthwash.)

@InterestedDad37
Like the sound of that, thanks

My house for a start. Most restaurants? Are you posting from 1979? Although even then you would have had a boiled egg and some bright pink ham.

SafeAndStranded · 21/05/2026 10:58

We get so few hot days in this country that theres no way I'm coming in from the garden and fucking about with a frittata.

Your attempt at insulting me is low IQ, try harder. If you're not as rude in person, happily accept your invitation.

Do you not get out much?

mondaytosunday · 21/05/2026 11:03

@WhistPieshe means tortillas and that’s how they sell them in Spain too. It’s not like an English omelette!
Yes OP there’s tons of hot weather food. I personally like gazpacho soup, tortillas and bread and Adele toon of cured meats. I love salad though so have these a lot year round. I suppose I wouldn’t be having a roast but last night o dud have shepherds pie which I guess would be considered cold weather food. Stir fries are good as loads of veg. Yesterday I ate out and had deep fried stuffed marrow flowers! And you can’t beat a good old sandwich!

If you can’t make a salad yourself then Marks and Spencer’s have lots.

No, I'm a hermit and just make arbitrary comments so people like you can make passive aggressive statements to feel cool online. You're welcome.

Where is it that you are getting one salad leaf and half a tomato?

Copt Oak Markfield for one and all pubs. Most restaurant salads are pathetically small and lazily prepared, in favour of chips and peas, so make my own at home. M&S make nice salads but can't ever find one out. Happy for suggestions.

Takeaway pizza in the park. Mmm.

But I do also love a good salad. Summer, winter, whenever.

ButterYellowFlowers · 21/05/2026 11:17

People can eat what they want. It’s cultural to eat certain foods in certain seasons and weathers - for the British this means salads and BBQ in sunshine. Just like for Koreans and Japanese it means cold noodles and Bingsu!

During the heatwave a couple of years ago I put my air fryer in the garden so it wouldn't heat up the kitchen.

TotalBaloney · 21/05/2026 11:24

Ah fab thanks, I had no idea! All these years I’ve been munching on lettuce and tomatoes the minute the temp goes over 20 degrees, and I could have been eating ready made omelettes instead! My mind is truly blown.
