Yes, I know it's always been a right-wing rag, but it used to be a lot more fun and interesting for stories about people I had actually heard of, royals, health stuff, and human-interest stories.

However, these days I find very little I want to click on. The royal coverage is all "Kate, saint who walks on water" and "Meghan, bad witch who should be burned at the stake." I also like Kate better than Meghan, but their coverage is a joke. The sycophancy over Kate is to such a degree that surely it must be written ironically.

I look at the home page and the sidebar, and 90 percent of the people named, I have never heard of.

The health stuff is all warnings about dire conditions that are really rare in the real world. It used to be useful information, but now it's just endless scaremongering. I see the headlines and I just roll my eyes.

The really interesting human-interest stories have gone. Now the stories are all about someone I've never heard of snubbing someone else I've never heard of on social media. Really inconsequential stuff.

My bar for mindless scrolling really isn't high, but the DM has managed to bore me into not really reading it anymore. I used to read many of their articles. Nowadays, i look at the front page still, but less, and don't find much I want to click on. I expect the next stage will be just not ever looking at it.

Also, much of it's behind a paywall with really misleading headlines to get you to sign up. There's no way I'm paying for that trash, so I use an archiving site, but often it doesn't work. And less and less can I be bothered to go through the process anyway.

If you used to enjoy the site, do you also find that it seems to have gone so downhill that it's almost as if they don't want readers anymore?

The Liz Jones Diary is a guilty pleasure.

It's probably the only newspaper site I actually read - I used to read The Guardian but that went mental about 10 years ago.

TheChicDreamer · 20/05/2026 21:03

It’s dire. Utter misogynistic trash and actually quite sinister in its sensationalist propaganda which the hard of thinking seem to lap up as gospel.
Do yourself a favour OP and stop feeding into its power by clicking on its links.

WirralWool · 20/05/2026 21:06

The irony is that the DM used to hate her and made atrocious claims about her - “Waity Katie” who conspired with her evil mother to trap Prince William. They were vile to her for years.

Well, that's the point, I barely find anything I want to click on anymore.

I'm fed up with her too, because she can't get on with anyone. Always the same. Fighting with exes etc.

The only one worth reading still is Jan Moir. She writes about people I've heard of and has a wonderfully funny turn of phrase. But one occasional columnist does not a newspaper make.

I’ve given up with it as about 80% of it’s behind a paywall now.

TheGardenPond · 20/05/2026 21:14

I voted YABU for ever clicking on it in the first place.

Sartre · 20/05/2026 21:16

Something has to be up the hill to go down it…

MynameisnotJohn · 20/05/2026 21:16

Ugh haven’t bothered for ages since it was all MAIL+. And unedited US and Australian news fillers. It’s was impossible even last year and doesn’t sound like it’s improved.

EasilyPleased · 20/05/2026 21:16

The DM has always functioned on so basic a level I’m not sure ‘downhill’ is possible.

You can use the site archive.ph to see paywall articles. I read Jan Moir's article today about Meghan and Harry, and it was hilarious. But good pieces are very rare on that site now.

When was it ever at the top of the hill? Dreadful rag, full of gossip about non-slebs I've never heard of, and care even less about.

(Happy to admit I'm an old git)

cestlavielife · 20/05/2026 21:18

Yabu because it has always been like that.

Calibre · 20/05/2026 21:18

I didn't realise it was possible for it to go any more downhill

I know! It used to be my guilty pleasure a few years ago, but now there's nothing in there to read, really, unless you're interested in minutiae about under-25s who you've never heard of.

It’s always been dire. I read the guardian online. Haven’t read DM for years. It just doesn’t exist for me.

Nah, it was much better about ten years ago. I mean, the politics have always been dodgy, but they had interesting health and human-interest stories. Now it's so boring there's almost nothing I want to read.

It's so bad now that it seems whoever's in charge is determined to drive it into the ground. I mean, I used to be a heavy reader of its non-political coverage, and now I glance at the home page and glaze over in seconds.

I read the Guardian mostly, too, for anything serious. I just noticed that I used to enjoy their lighter-hearted coverage, but they don't even have that anymore. It's so bad that it's like sabotage from within. Their viewership must surely be going down and down.

The daily mail isn’t even fit for toilet paper. The shit they print shouldn’t be allowed, ditto the telegraph. They’re a disgrace with their blatant disregard for accuracy and truth and their bullying ways. They’ve always disgusted me, not just recently

canuckup · 20/05/2026 21:26

Well it was never uphill really

It's amazing for the sleb photos

Venezuela and that Price lad?? I cannot get enough. Living in a caravan but dad 'gifted' them 5 million 😂

Is Liz Jones still going?

I have to admit Ive not bought a paper for over 20 years but I used to love the Mail on Sunday and the Liz Jones page was my guilty pleasure as well

Who was the man on the train? I have to admit never being up on who's who, so I never got her not so subtle clues

Propagandalf · 20/05/2026 21:29

I stay away from the news. Sick to death of hearing about Trump, Starmer and Putin all of the time and their needless warmongering.

I swear it wasn't like this back in the 90s.
