To ask my family for empty products for the boots recycling scheme?

I’m trying to save up for a large electronic item, in part using the boots recycling scheme.

I live alone, so don’t generate that many empties. I texted my family group chat to ask if they could put them to one side and I’d pick them up, if they were okay with that.

My sister in law is outraged and has said I’m cheating the system as it’s designed to only work with what you use up. My argument is that it’s basically just one family’s worth of empties. They don’t use the scheme, so nobody is missing out. AIBU?

I didn’t know about this scheme! Definitely going to explore

I now recall others on MN saying the whole scheme was a pain to use and clunky, or they had their points removed! I also find it cheeky that you only get the points when you spend even more money there!

A question- how do they know you have physically put the scanned items in the recycling bin and not taken them home to scan next month? 🤔

I’ve accrued quite a few points - perhaps I’d better spend them. I recycle 3 times ish a month.

I bet she’s a joyless fun sucker.

Tell her to unclench and start recycling!

Outranged my arse!

Whoisthatgirl89 · 19/05/2026 22:50

That’s a bizarre response from her! My mum always gives her mine although tbh my pile is overflowing. Collected £100 plus of points and then bought a ‘free’ posh perfume - when it was sale time too! Now back at £95 of points…what to spend this on!

YellowDaffodil25 · 19/05/2026 22:52

Totally bizarre response from her, why does she care whether you use other people’s items if they aren’t using the scheme?!

YANBU at all.

I’m guessing they keep a log of what should be in the bin, because you scan a QR code to drop off, so they compare the contents of the bin?

@merlotandcheese i think that’s be a lot of time and effort. They just want people spending there really ? Tbh it works - I used to get toothpaste etc in supermarket shop. Never went in Boots, now I spend £40 ish a month.
