My favourite Greek yoghurt travels by refrigerated lorry all the way from Greece

Embarrassed to admit that I never thought about this before. My favourite brand was not available online this week and the substitute - also Greek’ - had travelled many miles overland through the Balkans, Europe and ferry etc - to reach me. Turns out that’s what my normal v delicious and well known branded yoghurt does every week, because it can’t be called Greek if it isn’t made, packaged etc in Greece. So I’m thinking, there must be a UK-equivalent Greek-style’ yoghurt that is just as delicious but without all the miles?

Afterwards yes. If you restrain yourself from eating it all in one go!!

And what about salt? Do you add that?

Thanks btw - I've been trying to work out how to do this for a while.

Greek style is made with a different process (ie much more processed) and doesn't have any of the gut health (which we now know affects all organs and processes) benefits. Some of it is actively shite, with thickeners which fuck with the microbiome.

I don't know about this particular case so might be talking out of my arse - but I've often been struck by how something which sounds really bad (ie the carbon footprint of the importing) is often not as bad as it sounds at first when set aside the 'true' cost of the alternative.

So in this case, it would be really useful to hear about the carbon footprint of the industrialised processes of the massive food conglomerates who produce 'greek style', against that of the travel plus the possibly less brutal carbon costs of the 'real' Greek yoghurt.

What’s the good stuff in actual Greek yoghurt? Isn’t it all made of milk?

I think it's the little bugsy things - probiotics that live in it.

Apparently the shortage is down to a viral Instagram/tictoc post about yogurt bowls. It's out of stock in my local Tesco in Devon for the last few weeks

Fucking instagram! Ruins everything!!

I am a big fan of flavour but I dont add anything until after its solid and then mash it up with stuff, whatever you like. Salt, pepper, herbs, garlic. The more 'wet' stuff you put in like herbs and garlic, the shorter the shelf life I think.

Lancashire Farms Greek style yoghurt is divine. I buy it in tesco in a big tub.

I second this and find it really good value.

It’s really straightforward to make “Greek” yogurt. Make it the usual way then strain it through and old pillow case. Bingo. Yoghurt for life.

Oh christ. I’ve just realised I’m an actual yoghurt weaver 🧘‍♀️

I may have just found another use for my Liz Earle muslins.

I love Fage but the normal one has been unavailable in Sainsbury’s for a few weeks now

Funnily enough I couldn’t get mine in Tesco yesterday and had to slum it in Asda to get some.

SapphireSeptember · 19/05/2026 23:04

Lancashire farms Greek style yoghurt is amazing. It's so thick it's ridiculous and I love it. Their natural yoghurt is the same consistency as Greek style yoghurt from the supermarket. I buy both because DS won't eat the thick stuff.

Tim's dairy is great. It's made by the Timotheou family in the UK, if that makes it feel more authentic.

I agree, the Tims yoghurt is excellent and a very good substitute if you want to avoid the miles for environmental reasons.

Savoury yoghurt bowls have been everywhere and I’m fully into it!

notnorman · 19/05/2026 23:28

M and s do an amazing 10% one

Find me a GreeK Style yoghurt with 10.3g Protein per 100g & 0% Fat & that tastes delish then.
Don’t think you’ll find any. Another Fage fan here & now I know why I can’t get any atm!

This is nice. 11.5g protein
£1.95 for 450g
I had it as a substitute on my shopping and liked it

No these are both Greek yoghurt, not Greek style.

So you don’t have an argument with what I’m saying as we are talking about completely different things !

I believe 'Greek style' is often not strained and manufactured in the same way that makes the real Greek stuff so good nutritionally, and also includes lots of added sugar.

If anyone knows of uk produced this doesn't apply to I'd be grateful to know of a nearer source.

Yeo valley. Organic, nothing added and it's delicious. You need the thick Greek recipe strained one in the big white and blue tubs.

Wow that’s so much cheaper I would def try & great protein amount but don’t have Sainsbury’s near me alas.

I’m sure a few supermarkets are doing similar now so probably worth a look in whichever is your closest. I know Aldi do one which is labelled 55g protein, it’s not fat free but the calories aren’t far off. From memory it’s about 68 cals per 100g and 11g ish of protein

OhThePotential · 20/05/2026 00:14

I don’t like real Greek Yoghurt, and I think I’ve tried them all.

For me M&S or Tesco Greek style yoghurt are both perfect . They have to be full fat though, the fat free ones are disgusting. I don’t care about any nutritional differences, its plain yoghurt that tastes great, is cheap, plentiful and made in the UK. That’s more than good enough for me.

Yeo Valley is nice too but I stopped buying that when they put the price up and made the tub smaller by 150grams 🫤

overwhelmedinagoodway · 20/05/2026 00:15

Now this is just silly. So when you go for an Indian curry, it’s not Indian because it’s not made in India ?

Also think about the poor sheep in Greece. I wouldn't buy it for this reason. Not exactly renowned for high animal welfare practices.

can you expand on this?

Having a sleepless night and I came across this thread.I've now been downstairs for a bowl of Tim's yogurt with fresh raspberries.I shall blame MN for the nighttime snacking 😆😆
PS I get Tim's from Ocado
