To value respect above love in a relationship?

This might sound unconventional but it’s how I’ve come to see things.

For me, respect sits at the top of my relationship priorities, then practical compatibility (including finances) and then love. It’s not that love doesn’t matter - it absolutely does, but I’ve found that without respect and a shared approach to practical things, love on its own isn’t enough to sustain a healthy relationship. This is just what works for me, based on experience.

AIBU to see it this way?

There’s no real love without respect.

Yeah but I don't want relationship with someone I don't love regardless of the respect and practical compatibility 💁I'll take all 3 or nothing

You can’t have love without respect though.

Blimms · 19/05/2026 17:33

I think you need both

FeliciaFancybottom · 19/05/2026 17:33

Love and respect go hand in hand in my marriage.

I’d say love & respect sit evenly in priorities. No amount of respect or practical compatibility would make a relationship worthwhile with no love, equally no amount of love & practicality would be worth it without respect.
