Infected stitches

12 yr old DD had mole removed from toe 2 weeks ago. Stitches are now infected and she started on antibiotics Flucloxacillin yesterday. Wasn't seen by GP but sent pictures. Asked for nurse to change dressing but they said I could do it at home.
My concern is that it is worse today. Weeping and very wet, incredibly sore and painful. I appreciate that antibiotics haven't had time to work but I have sent the new pictures again to GP asking if this is something that needs to be seen and concerned about? I am changing it twice a day as its so wet.
My worry is sepsis.
Any thoughts please.

Id give the docs a call and tell them that. They will probably want to see it. better to be cautious. Did they give you any hibiscrub etc to clean it with?

I had the exact same thing last year on the sole of my foot. The interior stitches were the culprit I think it ended up as a hole that was really bad. No antibiotics as ended up abroad on holiday. I was really concerned and desperate and tried all the ointments including Fucidin and nothing was seemingly working. I found a chlorohexidene spray and used liberally, it completely and quickly saved me I would highly recommend finding one online. I now have a stash though no real need right now.

Urgent care first thing if you can't get a GP appt. Been through similar recently and got nasty alarming quickly.

Went to A&E who cleaned it and sent us away with a clean dressing on for the next 4 days. Nearly finished the antibiotics and went to change the dressing after 2 days because blood has seeped through and it's like this. Very wet and raw. She hasn't got a temperature and isn't feeling unwell, but this is obviously still infected. Because its between the toes it's hard to heal. Will go back to A&E first thing in morning with her but struggling as its now been 2.5 weeks. Stitches still not dissolved either

Did they swab it? I don't want to worry you but I once had MRSA and it was like that. A wet wound that took ages to heal.

Still waiting for the picture to load. No they didn't swab it. I asked about it mesa and staph but they said it was fine. I will push for a swab tomo. It looks like it's an ilcer now

Did she have blood tests?

Joco34 · 22/05/2026 07:51

No blood tests.

https://amzn.eu/d/0bsT7pIb this is similar to the one I used on a very similar looking wound. Mine was on the sole of my foot so equally difficult to heal and was deep and remained wet. I cant recommend this stuff enough! All the best.

who did the initial procedure? It's a post-op complication so should be them seeing and sorting.

Joco34 · 22/05/2026 21:00

Returned to hospital and Dr cleaned it, removed most of the stitches and did a swab. Has said to salt water bathe it regularly and leave it open without a dressing when we are home. Has prescribed different antibiotics. Was a plastic surgeon that operated, they havent mentioned about referring us back, we have a follow up in 4 weeks.
