To be annoyed with MIL's almost out of date chicken?

Last night, about 4pm, MIL turns up while I was out with a pack of chicken breasts with the use by date of yesterday, puts them in our fridge and says they have to be eaten today (yesterday) as it's the last day. DH tells me when I get home that there's chicken in the fridge that must be eaten tonight.
I'm like, OK.... But I have stuff I had planned for dinner tonight and all week in fact, and I've got my own use-by dates on the stuff I bought and the week's dinners planned accordingly and now you're going to throw that all out of whack because we have to eat MIL's chicken instead, because of her poor planning and/or reluctance to throw out her own shit, you acting like her food waste bin?
But DH thinks we should be grateful?
Who's side are you on?

You don't have to eat it. I'd have either frozen or cooked at the time and then put in fridge to use the next day. I get not wanting to change what you already had planned at the last minute But it's not a big issue worth a fight surely.

FeliciaFancybottom · 18/05/2026 10:04

You seem determined to make this a big deal so, put the chicken breasts in a paper bag, get in the car and drive to her house, set the bag on fire and throw it at her front door, all the while shouting, "I don't want your fucking chicken".
That should show her.

You don’t have room in the freezer for two chicken breasts?

Did I say how many?

Doesn't seem like a needing to take sides issue. Awaiting backstory of why your MIL is just awful and constantly ruins your life.

Absolutely this.
These things have a tendency to get ramped up until people start agreeing with the OP.

Mapleunicorn · 18/05/2026 10:04

This is such a non issue there must be a backstory with your MIL. Cook them and use them for sandwiches in the week.

Personally I would see this as her not wanting to waste food and thinking maybe you might have a use rather than binning it. I wouldn’t see it as an attempt to scupper your meal plan. But then again I like my MIL.

TipsyLaird · 18/05/2026 10:04

Do neither of you own a freezer?

VillageMilton · 18/05/2026 10:05

So you don't like your MIL Big deal. Join the zillions of other precious DILs on this site with their petty, imagined grievances.

And they wonder why men work so much unpaid overtime.

I freeze things on the last day, and it's never been an issue

The entre contents of my freezer is yellow/orange sticker meat or fish.

No she didn't, she just wanted somewhere to dump her chicken.

Don't be ridiculous.

I'm awaiting the next post saying your MIL doesn't have a bin

Rizzz · 18/05/2026 10:07

MrCollinsandhisboiledpotatoes · 18/05/2026 09:59

You can't stick things in the freezer on the last day, can you? I thought yours supposed to do that the day you buy them?
Anyway, got no room in the freezer

Yes you can, or at least I've been doing it for over 50 years with no problems.

But either way, this is a mountain/molehill situation and not something I'd get annoyed about.

If you don't want them, bin them.

If your DH wants them, he can cook them 🤷‍♂️

Tartanarmy2 · 18/05/2026 10:09

Did you really need to ask Mumsnet? Blimey, some people just love drama. Bonkers

Spiffingdarling88 · 18/05/2026 10:11

You can freeze it on the last day, if you have no space just bake them off and you get another 3-4 days.

TheSeventh · 18/05/2026 10:12

Cook it, it will then last another week the fridge

Something to do though innit? 😁

I'm on a train, I'm bored, and started thinking about MIL and her bloody chicken and how I am now cooking something different tonight because I cooked her chicken last night and I also gave my own chicken and now we're going to have chicken twice in one week, plus leftover chicken sandwiches and that's a lot of bloody chicken.

So I made an AIBU. It's annoying, but I'm not seeeething.

Are you always this aggressive and suspicious? The woman gave you chicken. That was in date. Up to you what you do with it, but it's not as if this is some kind of difficult dilemma. Really is a mountain out of a tiny molehill.

Read a book! Look out the window! Listen to a podcast! Stop resenting chicken!

thebabessavedme · 18/05/2026 10:15

I buy yellow ticket meat all the time and then freeze it, perfectly fine..

We often have what I describe as 'yellow tickettastic dinners if I buy the whole meal on them

Stop Resenting Chicken sounds like it could be a podcast itself

ineededanewnameitsbeentoolong · 18/05/2026 10:16

Just put it in a pan, stick in oven for 30 min - sandwich fillers/soup for next week

She didn't really give me chicken though, she came round and dumped chicken she didn't want in my fridge without asking the person who does the shopping and the food planning. Which is kind of annoying.
It's like when my own mum is always trying to palm off bits of crockery and furniture on me. It's annoying. Not like world-shattering annoying but annoying.

Yes you are being unreasonable. If she'd wanted to dump it her bin would have been much more convenient. All you need to do is cook it today. I'm sure your meal plan won't be ruined by having chicken sandwiches instead of ....

Tell your husband to beat her away with a big stick next time she comes round your house offering free food.

WirralWool · 18/05/2026 10:17

What an evil woman, bringing you chicken! I’d have just cooked it in the oven and eaten it on sandwiches or a salad for lunch today.

Chicken twice in one week? Wow! How will you cope?

I’ll call DCoroner now for you.
