AIBU to ask people not to poop in new under stairs cloakroom?

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:46

We are just having a new cloakroom installed downstairs. AIBU to put a sign up saying ‘no poo loo’ or ‘if you plan to do a poo do it in the upstairs loo’?

My DH thinks it’s not reasonable. I just down like the idea of people doing a poop in there and then the macerator having to … anyway AIBU?

Everyone poos. Get over it.

missmollygreen · 17/05/2026 20:47

You can ask..
But at some point someone WILL poo in there. So I would just get over it quickly.

stichguru · 17/05/2026 20:48

Don't do this, some people struggle with things like this.

TeaPot496 · 17/05/2026 20:48

What about puking?

maybethisway · 17/05/2026 20:50

Why is it better for them to poo upstairs?

Octavia64 · 17/05/2026 20:50

Do you have elderly relatives?

some people can’t do stairs.

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:50

Oh god puking 🤮. Definitely no puking!

It’s going to happen at some stage, either because somebody doesn’t read the sign, or reads the sign and thinks it’s a joke, or you have an elderly / disabled guest who can’t manage stairs. You can try to uphold it for people who live in the house, but I suspect they will also ignore it whenever you’re out.

Tigerbalmshark · 17/05/2026 20:50

If you don’t want people to use it as a toilet, why are you actually installing it?

Genuine question - can’t it go anywhere else, and if not, is there any point in spending £10-15k in putting it in if you are going to be revolted by people using it?

Because it’s not a macerator.

Macerator toilets are awful and often clog if people do poops that are too big!

Put a proper toilet in so people can poo to their heart's content!

DoAWheelie · 17/05/2026 20:51

I once lived in a flat that only had one loo with a macerator. It was fine. They are built to cope. Just have some air freshener available or a window/vent.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 17/05/2026 20:51

Daft to police where people can poo. Totally stupid to put up a naff rhyming sign up about it

PashaMinaMio · 17/05/2026 20:51

Your husband is right.
Stop being silly.
Your visitor(s) might be embarrassed having to say they’re “going upstairs”, nod nod, wink wink.

Because it’s not a macerator.

Why have it installed if it’s not to be used?

maybethisway · 17/05/2026 20:52

keepswimming38 · 17/05/2026 20:50

Because it’s not a macerator.

Are you concerned it won’t work? What’s the issue with the macerator?

PrehistoricGarbageTruck · 17/05/2026 20:52

What's the issue with pooing in it? One of our toilets is a macerator and we don't have any restrictions on using it. Never had a single problem with it either!

GuineaPigWig · 17/05/2026 20:52

You can keep some corks next to the front door to offer guests. Right next to the blue plastic shoe covers I assume you have.

My daughter recently got sepsis and it’s affected her mobility. She would use upstairs loo in morning to poop though.

Who is likely to be pooing in your downstairs loo that isn’t part of your household or a very close friend/family member anyway? Do you have a lot of guests you don’t speak to? You could put the sign there but it seems a bit strange. Surely unless the toilet absolutely can’t cope with number 2s without causing some major plumbing issue, then when guests ask to use the loo give them a choice of downstairs or upstairs loo … surely the majority of people wouldn’t choose to do solids in a toilet mere feet away from their hosts?

LittlePetitePsychopath · 17/05/2026 20:53

No. It's a toilet. People who need the toilet will go to the nearest one. Nobody is going to go in, read that, and then run upstairs... for a start, they may as well wear a "I NEED A POO" banner.

People will wee, poo and puke in there. It's a toilet.

PrehistoricGarbageTruck · 17/05/2026 20:53

I would find it bizarre beyond belief that someone had installed an entire bathroom just for wees. A toilet that only does half the job is a bad choice for a bathroom.

I suspect it'll be fine handling more solid matter, though. That's what it's for!

And when she needs to poo in the afternoon?

Years ago in the house before this one we had a macerator in an en-suite that used to block constantly. We said never again but then this was the only option due to where it’s situated.

You need a sign up for macerator there fine but can’t handle ANYTHING but pee poo and paper
no wipes or sanitary products

tbh a macerator can handle shit better than normal toilet it’s all wizzed up and pumped
