AIBU to think open bakery items in M&S are unhygienic?

Went to m and s on the way home - it was busy. I was absolutely shocked at the bakery area and then nearer the front of the store a table with unpackaged loaves of bread ?

As it was after school there were children there and I saw 2 touch some of the pastries , people were looking at them talking and breathing all over them and one woman coughed 🤮 the loaves of bread at the other side were being picked up and put down , a child was moving them about, how can this be hygienic??! Why is the bakery area not covered in some way? I usually go to Waitrose and their bakery items are in a cabinet at least. M and s isn’t cheap so why are they not more hygienic!!!!

For me it’s not the “catching something” it’s the thought of people who haven’t washed their hands after going to the toilet picking up baked goods and then putting it down again, or coughing or sneezing in the vicinity, it’s just deeply unpleasant even if you won’t catch the bubonic plague.

Suit yourself. I think people's lives are greatly enhanced by being less concerned about things like this.

TBH I’m surprised it’s allowed any more under food hygiene laws.

Waitrose are just as bad. People have 0 hygiene standards these days.

I’m immune suppressed and I just can’t risk buying from the bakery. Some m&s stores will freshly cook items if you’re immune suppressed and ask, they did for me when I was just days out of hospital post transplant, but generally it’s not something which is available.

Same here. Our Co-Op and Booths also sell unwrapped/uncovered bread/rolls etc and we won't buy them which is a shame as they look good. But not worth the risk.

What do you all think is happening to the packaged bakery items before they're wrapped in plastic? Do you really think they go from oven to bag without being touched? 😂😂😂

Personally I don’t find my life enhanced by people coughing over a doughnut and then me eating it, but you do you.

Have you seen LIDL?

in the absolute height of Covid I saw a man lift a pastry and bread roll with his hands and SET THEM DIRECTLY ON THE CONVEYOR BELT.

Jk987 · 15/05/2026 19:23

Their chocolate chip cookies are divine though 😋

This type of bread is made in a factory by people dressed appropriately who don't cough and sneeze all over it and who wash their hands after going to the toilet.

Whataflippincircus · 15/05/2026 19:26

It’s not just M & S. I once saw a woman squeezing several loaves in Sainsburys. I told her off.

I won’t buy any bakery item that’s open to being touched.

verabarbleen · 15/05/2026 19:27

I went to Gail’s bakery and absolutely everything was just on a table completely open with flies buzzing round it 😭 no one else seemed to care! It’s rank . Years ago I was in a coffee shop and a man was standing over the muffins this was before they had glass in front of them , as he was ordering a big bit of snot dropped from
his nose 😭

I often buy stuff from the M&S bakery and I'm still alive, so meh.

The risk is definitely worth it

PistachioTiramisu · 15/05/2026 19:27

I agree - I won't buy any bakery items from M&S or Waitrose, or Lidl for that matter. All the same with open counters with kids coughing and handling the food.

HoldMyWine · 15/05/2026 19:30

I am with you , I don’t like open bakery. I was in Costa the other day and there was a blue bottle fly landing on all the croissants etc; I wanted an almond croissant but had to have a slice of Victoria sponge as it was under a cloche.

Yes i agree , the one near my has big pretzels on 'hooks' in the bakery dept and they are low and totally exposed and touchable.
I think they have sacrificed hygiene for aesthetics !

in my store their half wrapped sour dough baguettes stood up in low baskets are at arse height...yuk

I haven’t been to an m and s in a while as usually go to Waitrose as it’s nearer and they have a cabinet with bakery goods in so I was a bit surprised today !

Isn’t she just!

There are hygiene laws in place in factories and staff have to wearing protective clothing and will have been through food handling/hygiene training.

The average shopper in M&S won't have either.

You also don't get snotty nosed, dirty handed kids in food factories.

Flowerpower70 · 15/05/2026 19:37

Absolutely agree, I don't buy from them for this reason. I have seen blu bottles flying round them and an old lady pick one up only to drop it on floor pick it up with bare hands and put it back to select another. Took said item to staff member who shrugged said nothing and put it aside. Seen them coughed and sneezed over and there's no date on them either.

desperatemum1234 · 15/05/2026 19:38

I’ve thought this as well - and at our local m&s the bakery section is at the back, not the front - but still!

Tickingcrocodile · 15/05/2026 19:39

Most supermarket bakery sections are open. I've bought several things and never had any ill effects. Mind you, I do spend every day around 30 children who wipe their noses and then give me a hug so.my germ threshold is probably quite high.

personally I find any 'risks' taken to be entirely worth it

Notasbigasithink · 15/05/2026 19:41

The trolly handles are probably less hygienic and most people dont wash or sanitise their hands before touching their face etc

Gowlett · 15/05/2026 19:41

I buy them all the time, doesn’t bother me.

Even if someone’s toddler licked my donut.

Paytovote · 15/05/2026 19:41

Bought a loaf today. Was delicious 😂

tabbycatcuddles · 15/05/2026 19:42

I buy my kids treats for m&s bakery every week but then they do also lick bus windows.

They're never ill, though.

ButterYellowFlowers · 15/05/2026 19:43

Great let’s cover every single thing ever in plastic because people don’t have immune systems

Corvidsarethebest · 15/05/2026 19:44

I hope none of you eat out!
