AIBU to think open bakery items in M&S are unhygienic?

Went to m and s on the way home - it was busy. I was absolutely shocked at the bakery area and then nearer the front of the store a table with unpackaged loaves of bread ?

As it was after school there were children there and I saw 2 touch some of the pastries , people were looking at them talking and breathing all over them and one woman coughed 🤮 the loaves of bread at the other side were being picked up and put down , a child was moving them about, how can this be hygienic??! Why is the bakery area not covered in some way? I usually go to Waitrose and their bakery items are in a cabinet at least. M and s isn’t cheap so why are they not more hygienic!!!!

I haven’t been to an m and s in a while as usually go to Waitrose as it’s nearer and they have a cabinet with bakery goods in so I was a bit surprised today !

I dont buy any unwrapped bakery goods now, even in a cabinet with tongs people still touch them. M&s is particularly bad with the baguettes sticking out in a basket next to the tills.

Ive always thought this about the lidl bakery and never understood the love for it. I saw a girl drop a doughnut and a man told her to put it back because “no one saw” I bloody did! Dont know how people eat from them

therealduchess · 15/05/2026 18:41

Absolutely agree, and, more than once, I've seen people do gross stuff...saw a grown adult pick a doughnut up to inspect it before putting it back. And, once saw a kid licking those mini victoria sponge cakes 🤢

hellobaby24 · 15/05/2026 18:41

I saw a woman pick up several loaves, feel them squeeze them and then put them back and buy a packed loaf. Yuk

Starsaff · 15/05/2026 18:42

I was in a few years ago about to life one of there Victoria sponge muffins for a weekend treat. I reached down to get a bag and as went to reach for the muffin a large blue bottle fly had landed right on the buttercream icing on top of the muffin rubbing its legs together. I used to like their bakery but I couldn't unsee that and have never bought open items there or anywhere again.

If the world was suddenly plunged back to the dark ages , 90% of mumsnetters would die almost instantly

childoftkty · 15/05/2026 18:48

I literally can’t get bothered by it

Same here. It’s fine. We’re so much fussier about these things than other cultures.

Racist.

RobinEllacotStrike · 15/05/2026 18:49

I don’t go to M&S food much anymore )none in my town) but they do seem to be trying to go for a “country pantry” kind of vibe.

notnorman · 15/05/2026 18:50

One thing I liked about ‘Covid times‘ was that people actually washed their hands

I nearly bought a pastry there this week, saw it was £2.65 so went to Lidl. At £2.65 I think they could afford a bag

Ha yes, Lidl or Aldi for me too.

Kingfisherfree10 · 15/05/2026 17:56

I agree and have always found it off putting. I remember picking up the Sourdough bread with tongs, wrestling to get it into a bag without touching it only for the woman at the checkout to grab it with her sweaty hands that she had just picked up a raw chicken with?!

TBH even if it is packed behind the till, it is probably just as bad. A lady behind the deli in my local Morrisons is always scratching her scabby hands before cutting the cooked meats and doesn’t wash her hands before serving.

Edited

Unwrapped raw chicken is surely not allowed in M and S?

Crosorbled · 15/05/2026 18:57

I have always been very reluctant to buy bakery goods from open displays . I felt vindicated when spotting a man knock a bread roll on the floor, pick it up and return it to the display !

Beastieboys · 15/05/2026 18:59

Yeah I find this odd plus the bread in upright baskets (French sticks ) hanging out of bags at the top at hem of coat level AND telling you to use tongs to pick up loaves but pulling them out of the bags to scan with their bare hands at the checkout !

Absolutely agree, I don't buy from them for this reason.

Same here

And I have very low standards

TeresaMayspants · 15/05/2026 19:02

100 percent agree. I saw today- the bread on a table in the middle of the store. How many coats and handbags have brushed past it. 😱

Such a shame as they look delicious otherwise!

hallenbad · 15/05/2026 19:02

The fanciest bakeries where I live have everything open. I can’t help but think it’s not great for other reasons to have everything plastic wrapped

Pandersmum · 15/05/2026 19:03

I’ve never felt like buying the £8 sourdough on a open table at entrance of Gloucester service station …..

PinkNailPolish2026 · 15/05/2026 17:34

I don’t buy open bakery items from any supermarket, some people are feral near openly displayed baked goods. I’ve seen people in Lidl and Tesco pick things up and put them back too, the worst one was a child picking up donuts in Tesco and the mother telling them to put it back, utterly disgusting.

I’ve seen teenagers lick bakery items and put them back. I no longer buy these things

TheKeatingFive · 15/05/2026 17:55

The chances of catching anything problematic from a bakery item like this is minimal.

For me it’s not the “catching something” it’s the thought of people who haven’t washed their hands after going to the toilet picking up baked goods and then putting it down again, or coughing or sneezing in the vicinity, it’s just deeply unpleasant even if you won’t catch the bubonic plague.

Radyward · 15/05/2026 19:14

I cannot stand all the cellophane packaging which would be the go to if own baked goods arent allowed. So yes its a no to more packaging.i domt care if irs now seen as 'unhygienic" its been like that for at least 150 yrs and theres been no pain au chocolat crisis FGS

ReallyOtter · 15/05/2026 19:19

Regular Ovex and you're grand

Clariana · 15/05/2026 17:29

Same . I don’t know why anyone buys them. I noticed they suddenly had a vast majority of stuff unwrapped after Covid was perceived to be “over “ . Recently they have a lot of stuff wrapped again . So we must not be the only ones not buying it .

FishPie2 · 15/05/2026 19:21

Pandersmum · 15/05/2026 19:03

I’ve never felt like buying the £8 sourdough on a open table at entrance of Gloucester service station …..

Especially when I have seen people pick and poke at them and pull pieces off the top to taste them. Followed a woman from the toilets who didn't wash her hands then she went to the bread table to maul a few of them before walking round the the scones etc.to do the same.
I don't buy sourdough in M and S anymore for the same reason. My newly opened bakery keeps it all behind the counter and only the staff touch them with tongs to bag them.
