AIBU to think open bakery items in M&S are unhygienic?

Went to m and s on the way home - it was busy. I was absolutely shocked at the bakery area and then nearer the front of the store a table with unpackaged loaves of bread ?

As it was after school there were children there and I saw 2 touch some of the pastries , people were looking at them talking and breathing all over them and one woman coughed 🤮 the loaves of bread at the other side were being picked up and put down , a child was moving them about, how can this be hygienic??! Why is the bakery area not covered in some way? I usually go to Waitrose and their bakery items are in a cabinet at least. M and s isn’t cheap so why are they not more hygienic!!!!

I dont buy those items for that very reason. Witnessed people pick up bread ( not wrapped end ) and put it it back. Those germs! Who the hell is handling your food before you eat it?? 70% of people don't wash their hands after a visit to the loo.

The problem I have with this sort of attitude is the hyper-focus on something that probably isn't that bad (the M&S bakery / dogs in cafés / kids making mince pies) while totally overlooking (or deliberately ignoring) the fact that they'll merrily type away on a keyboard or handle their phone without washing their hands afterwards, or happily put their phone on their face.

Phones and keyboards (and handbags, and money, and sponges and dishcloths, and TV controllers, and light switches, and many other things you handle all the time without washing your hands) are, most of the time, genuinely filthy. The M&S bakery is a sterile operating theatre by comparison. So I'll continue to enjoy my croissant!

Yep. People pawing those McDonalds ordering screens all day long… If I’m going there, my order is made at the counter with a staff member. I’ll eat an M&S croissant, though!

Spaghettioverload · 18/05/2026 18:21

Yeah it’s gross. I went to a service station where they have all the delicious cakes stacked upon tables and saw a toddler licking and touching them all.

Some of the items you list as 'genuinly filthy' have only been handled by the person who owns them, not the great unwashed public.

But in any case, I dont think anyone is telling you or anyone else not to enjoy your M&S bread....it's your own choice, just as it;s mine not to eat the much-mauled mince pies.😏

It’s open in most supermarkets, I’m still alive. I’d rather open and no plastic myself

hahabahbag · 18/05/2026 18:36

@Gowlett you can order on your phone at McDonald’s

@hahabahbag

yeah… I care more about my health than I do about avoiding plastic 🤷‍♀️

I find this baffling because most of you will put a cock in your mouth.

I can’t live worrying about this shit. There’s likely worse in your restaurant food constantly, even in top end places let alone the rest.

Yes, that's all very interesting, but do you eat M&S unwrapped breads and cake?

I’ve never ordered anything on my phone, while in an actual restaurant. Or used self service checkouts, if a staff member is on the tills. Nothing against tech, just prefer to interact when out.

I don't think most of us would put a penis that had been man handled by the public, coughed and sneezed on in our mouth? I mean you do you but it's a weird link to make....

I tend not to eat my phone, keyboard, dishcloth, remote control, light switches.
Many of those things are ones that only me and my family touch.
I think most people have a natural aversion to things that may harm them - shit, vomit, blood and take care to avoid injecting them.
I DO take items from the open bakery, but am careful - no flies, items that look sad and lonely, items than have clearly been prodded.

No but I would bet that you touch your keyboard then touch your face. Put your phone on your face for calls. Wipe dishcloths over utensils which you'll then use to eat. And so on and so forth.

I agree and have always found it off putting. I remember picking up the Sourdough bread with tongs, wrestling to get it into a bag without touching it only for the woman at the checkout to grab it with her sweaty hands that she had just picked up a raw chicken with?!

TBH even if it is packed behind the till, it is probably just as bad. A lady behind the deli in my local Morrisons is always scratching her scabby hands before cutting the cooked meats and doesn’t wash her hands before serving.

Edited

Why would the checkout woman have been handling raw chicken?

Did you have have it killed and plucked before she handled your sourdough. No she didn't.

Noseylittlemoo · 18/05/2026 21:30

I feel like I live in a different universe to some of the people here.
I don't really buy things that often from the M and S bakery because we have a small independent bakery where I live nothing to do with the hygiene aspect. I prefer to buy loose fruit and vegetables rather than those wrapped in tons of plastic . I also would also rather have a homemade cake or baked item than a supermarket packaged cake full of unknown ingredients. At work all the homemade goodies get snapped up in the lunch room first and if your not quick enough you get left with a custard cream or similar disappointment. On the rare occasions that there is anything left at the end of a day we try to cover it not for hygiene reasons but so that it will not go dry/soft for the next day!

Yes. But touching my face with something that only I have touched isn't the same as ingesting a donut that has snot on it.
I don't wipe dish cloths over utensils and then use them to eat. I wash up (using a dishcloth/sponge), rinse under hot water and then leave to dry.

Fizbosshoes · 18/05/2026 21:38

It might not be true but in my mind stuff that is "out" will be fresher than something sealed in plastic. (Ive probably fallen for their marketing plan - well done M and S!)
I havent really given any thought whether anyone has coughed/breathed/sneezed/farted/squeezed/licked the bread or cake. Maybe if I had seen someone do something disgusting it would put me off but until then I'll live in ignorance and enjoy an M and S baguette!

HRTQueen · 18/05/2026 21:40

Probably

but taste good so I don’t give it a second thought
