to think this is a strange advert even by 1984 standards?

I can't see what they were thinking when they made this advert. The man on it just seems threatening and the atmosphere in the house seems tense. Did it cause sales of British pork to rise?

I don't read him as threatening. Just a boring twat 😂 The kid looks relaxed and the woman just looks bored IMO.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/05/2026 19:05

Agreed with pp. not threatening just a typical bloke of his time used to having a traditional SAHW.

Elbowpatch · 13/05/2026 19:06

I vaguely remember it from the 80s. It’s just a typical 80s advert.

What were you expecting? Dancing pigs?

LiviaDrusillaAugusta · 13/05/2026 19:06

Not threatening. Just the trope of the father being a grumpy git

MandingoAteMyBaby · 13/05/2026 19:08

I guess you haven’t got what it takes.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 13/05/2026 19:10

@Elbowpatch

Yes! Bring back the dancing pigs!
Or was that the Danish Bacon advert? 🤔

CaptainMyCaptain · 13/05/2026 19:21

I cant see that at all @OonaStubbs

PassTheCranberrySauce · 13/05/2026 19:21

This advert makes me howl with laughter. DS1 has started creeping up behind me going, ‘the wife’s got plenty!’ in a nonspecific northern accent.

Shall we try it again a bit lighter? NO.

Comedycook · 13/05/2026 19:26

I think it's trying to show him as extremely proud of her in front of guests and a bit smug that she's his wife...but yeah I get what you mean

TheBloomingDahlia · 13/05/2026 19:36

The other two look happy enough but the dad could’ve cracked a smile or two. I know what you mean OP, a bit of a weird and serious vibe

OnSecondThoughts · 13/05/2026 19:37

Its a bit unnerving, but nothing compared to those skinhead Weetabix men, telling you that you better eat your Weetabix...if you know what's good for you. We were bullied by our breakfast back in those days!

Allonthesametrain · 13/05/2026 19:38

Remember it vaguely, didn't think much of it other than pork goes a long way. I don't think we actually properly listened as kids unless it was particularly engaging.

Tryanalogue · 13/05/2026 19:47

I thought it was bizarre when I saw it back then.

Then I took up a job that involved welding and a burn on my hand definitely smelt of pork, so maybe they were on to something.
