AIBU to ask for bank holiday pub shift off for Arsenal?

I have a second job in a pub/restaurant that I work in around 6-10 hours a week on top of my full-time NHS role. I am paid fairly well but like everyone my CoL has gone up massively and I'm a single woman too. I also like expensive things/botox/nice holidays, etc. and my second job is also quite sociable. On the upcoming bank holiday Sunday there is a music and beer festival from 2pm which is likely to go on well into the early hours - we were told absolutely no holiday requests for that weekend. For context, I only usually do 11-4 Friday, Saturday, Sunday (usually 1 or 2 but never all 3). I get between £50-£100 a week which is nice to have.

I'm also a massive Arsenal fan. Have been my entire life. I know football isn't a big thing on MN but it can be substituted for any hobby that you love and feel passionate about. For the first time in 22 years, we may win the league with the game that's being played at 4pm ON BANK HOLIDAY SUNDAY. I have sent my boss (who I'd been friends with for a long time before I worked there and who knows how much it means to me) a pleading message saying that I would happily work the Friday/Saturday/Monday and/or until 3:30 on the Sunday but PLEASE could I have the Sunday night off (there are five or six other members of bar staff and we will be open from 11am serving food until 4pm - you couldn't fit all of us behind the bar). She's basically said sorry but nobody can have time off, but then said she's doing the shifts this week and can't promise anything...

I feel like she IBU to not make an allowance for something that hasn't happened for 22 years and I'm honestly tempted to just quit if she doesn't allow it. I can get another job fairly easily but probably not cash in hand/with as much usual flexibility. I just don't know what to do.

To add I probably am in a bit of a 'fuck it' mood right now as I've just started a new main job which feels full of completely incompetent people and it's pissing me off, also waiting on the results which will likely say my mum has a brain tumour so you know... shrugs

@TheNewGaard another great username! And I'll be sacked alright and probably blacklisted from the pub - which is a shame as the food is great (and I get staff discount)

@CollectingAllTheACEsI really hope you get the time off, sounds like you deserve it.
im the same about Wimbledon and always have it off work if I can. I’ve turned down offers if there is a match I want to watch and people are so weird about it. I don’t understand how people can’t get that people have different interests!

As a fellow lifelong Gooner I don't blame you one bit - and hope you don't get sacked or blacklisted! I would wait til the shifts come through and take it from there - either way, you know that you won't be at work that day!

As an aside, I'm up North too (but from London) and very lonely in Merseyside in my Arsenal supporting! If anyone is watching the match in Liverpool or knows any Arsenal supporter groups up this way, please hook a sister up! 😁x

@summerchild82 sadly I'm on the other side of the North or I would join you! Newcastle/Sunderland are my closest prem teams and weirdly I have more Mackem than Geordie friends... although my closest 'biggish' team is Boro so there are a lot of depressed locals round here today

Are you actually going to the game? If so then I would push harder but if you are just going to watch in a pub I’d probably just stick an air pod in!

They might win the Premier League but they won’t beat PSG in the Champions League final on 30 May 🤭 Sorry that’s no help but I love PSG ❤️

Me too!

No I'm not going (I wish - it's away anyway but struggle to get tickets at the best of times!). There's not a chance that I'd get away with wearing an AirPod and our phones have to be locked away downstairs (I'd need to hook my phone up to Sky Sports as the pub doesn't have it)

is there any chance she'd let you leave and come back. e.g. still work 11-3.30 (so the main part of the event), go watch the football, and come back at about 6pm? Or would you not be up for doing that?

If staff are in potentially 11am-4am the next day then surely they can't be working 17hr shifts, so I can't see why you couldn't do two split shifts instead of a longer one.

If she can't be flexible I'd quit. If you're getting taxed at a higher rate anyway it's not worth missing out on something that means so much to you. Hopefully it sounds like she is considering being flexible though.

SnappyQuoter · 13/05/2026 15:19

You said this job was cash in hand? So… you’re not paying tax on these earnings.

MalewhoisLaffinalltheway · 13/05/2026 15:22

Resign! The Gunners are far more important!

Up the Arse! 😂

CollectingAllTheACEs · 13/05/2026 15:26

@latetothefisting I suppose I could do that but the event starts at 2pm and will be full on all day - plus if we did win there's nothing that would bring me back down to earth with a bump than going back to work instead of celebrating!

@SnappyQuoter It's a combination - if I work over a set number of hours I get paid cash in hand, the rest goes through the books

So what happened @CollectingAllTheACEs

was your friend /boss nice when she gave you your shift rota hours yesterday ?

bltwithoutthet · 19/05/2026 22:00

hope you’re working tonight tbh

justasking111 · 19/05/2026 22:06

Remember years ago the boss bought a TV into work for the lads it was the cup final. He knew he'd be short staffed otherwise.

That has reminded me - in 1998 our manager allowed us to bring a tv into the office to watch the World Cup 🤣

I’m gutted I didn’t go and watch tonight’s game near the ground. It looks mental there now!

Me too but I'm 215 miles away! Coming down next Friday night so we can get in an Arsenal pub for opening time. My mum is coming down for the parade and I'm a bit scared of facing her when we've been out all night!

You’ll just have to get her drunk too!

It was meant to be for Sunday but I don't need it now since we already won the league! I actually backed down and agreed to work so that I can go to London for the Champions League final at the end of the month and need the weekend off...
