AIBU to complain after Amazon opened the door and my cat escaped?

I had an email from Amazon saying that a package had been delivered. No photo. When I got home I found the back door open, the package inside the door and the cat gone.

@Witchonenowbob You said about me a few posts ago "... She's prone to error"

How far in was the parcel? Is it possible the door was open (as you left unlocked) and they just put it inside the door or is it too far in for that?

I'm still very bemused why so many people seem to be happy to have strangers walk into their own house when they're not there and that it seems to be normal. I'm totally missing something here.

Same with the excuse of minimum wage. That doesn't entitle someone to do this.

I know someone who works at an Amazon depot. Not near me, but I'm going to ask her what she thinks.

Did he walk in? Or open the door and put the parcel down?

What difference does it make what your friend thinks?

Are the safe place instructions 'outside' the back door or 'by' the back door?

If the door was open might have thought best to put it indoors rather than leave outside by an open door

Lock your door. Not Amazon's fault

of course its amazons responsibility. The driver works for them,no delivery person should open your door,

Someone above says it doesn't matter what my friend thinks. The post in which I quoted their response was from an Amazon operations manager who I told about this incident this morning. Not one of my friends, though I do know her.

The responses on this thread are wild!

Leaving your door unlocked does not mean that delivery drivers have permission to open it.

I don't want strangers opening my door.

It’s a friend! Why else would the message end in kisses!

It makes no difference, no one at Amazon actually cares about the door or your cat! You’re not going to het the driver reprimanded or make Amazon review their delivery methods, they don’t care about purchaser 235224631 because they’ve got loads of other purchasers.

Well don’t order from Amazon then?

Indeed. Bordering on nasty, if not there already.

FWIW, the person who works for Amazon is the niece of a colleague who I think was attempting to be kind by finishing the message with two kisses.

I wasn't actually complaining to her simply asking her opinion on what happened.

I dont know if you missed my previous post, but I told you Amazon's response to me when it happened. It is not ok.

I did see that and it was shocking what happened. There's no way they should be opening doors and coming into houses. I didn't lock the door on this occasion but I didn't leave it open. It's not impossible that it couldn't have blown open but unlikely as it was a calm day and I would have closed it properly to keep the cat inside. What's more likely is the Amazon employee didn't close the door properly.

What people don't seem to understand is that they shouldn't be trying doors at all. They didn't provide any photo either.

Well providing a pic of your kitchen table isn't the done thing! 😂

FernsInValley · 14/05/2026 00:34

I'm just glad that you weren't a victim of a crime. Could easily have happened. And also glad our door automatically locks when shut!
Eta And happy your cat came home for dinner of course!😺

Amazon are a nightmare for letting animals out, I’ve lost count of the amount of times they’ve left my garden gate wide open meaning my dogs are free to get onto the main road. I’ve complained and if anything that just made them do it more. I now minimise the amount of Amazon orders I make for this reason.
