AIBU to complain after Amazon opened the door and my cat escaped?

HelloDenise · Yesterday 23:32

I had an email from Amazon saying that a package had been delivered. No photo. When I got home I found the back door open, the package inside the door and the cat gone.

YANBU to complain to Amazon! I’m so sorry. I hope you find your cat x

BarbarianBabs · Yesterday 23:36

I’d say YABU. if your door can be opened by Amazon delivery person it isn’t secure. I’d suggest locking your door in future.

im assuming you don’t mean a porch?

I did forget to lock the door yes but that doesn't mean the Amazon person is entitled to open it. It's making me wonder if they try doors regularly.

It's not a porch. It opens straight into the sitting room.

The cat turned up when he realised he hadn't had his supper.

Oh great - so glad your cat came back ❤️ would definitely advise locking your front door from now on!

CoverLikelyZebra · Yesterday 23:53

Yabu for leaving the back door unlocked. But given you did so, your parcel was safer inside your house than out so anazon delivery person did the best possible job to get thr parcel.safely into your possession.

tiramisugelato · Yesterday 23:54

How do you know it was the Amazon man who let the cat out?

NotThisRecordNotThisRecord · Yesterday 23:56

You'd rather he had left the parcel outside, thereby attracting thieves who would swiftly realise you leave your house unlocked?

Tamtim · Yesterday 23:58

Someone up thread said you’re unreasonable for leaving your door unlocked. What? Leaving a door unlocked does not entitle anyone to open it! Yes, you should complain to Amazon. I doubt delivery drivers are told in training to let themselves into peoples homes.

It's the back door. It's not overlooked.

Are you and others seriously telling me it's fine for an Amazon driver to open my door, put a package in and walk away leaving the door open? The best case scenario is he or she attempted to shut the door but didn't close it properly and it blew open.

My question wasn't am I unreasonable for forgetting to lock the door, btw.

I had to go through the chat function to complain.

I'm sure he'll know better than to try to keep your parcel intact, out of the weather and out of view next time. It'll be slung into the street gutter outside your house the usual way.

That is a very Chatbot AI response from them

Blondeshavemorefun · Today 00:17

sounds like he didn’t enter it - just open the door (yes wrong) to put your Parcel safe inside

lock door next time

glad cat came back when hungry

is it an indoors cat ?

Monzo1ss · Today 00:18

The thing is, how do you know it was the Amazon driver that left the door open, is there cctv? Because, if the door was left unlocked anyone could have done that.

NotThisRecordNotThisRecord · Today 00:24

Including, if he's as smart as my old cat, the cat himself.

It was a sunny dry day and has been all day long. It's not rained at all. It's an enclosed back that has a wall and is accessed through a gate. Like a walled garden. Not somewhere that's overlooked or easily accessible. You'd have to be 7' tall or on stilts to be casually walking by and looking over the top.

I don't have a street gutter.

I don't think the cat brought the package in!

Lock your door. Not Amazon's fault

Maray1967 · Today 00:27

Lock your doors!!!

I’d hit the roof with DS if he left our doors unlocked.

No, the delivery driver should not have opened your door, but my first response would have been to kick myself up for leaving my door unlocked.

NotThisRecordNotThisRecord · Today 00:31

The door was probably open when Amazon man turned up.

MyGirlJ · Today 00:45

Amazon drivers do regularly open doors to leave parcels. It's happened to me twice where instead of leaving inside the porch (as per delivery instructions) they' e opened the inner door and left the package in my hallway. First time my husband had gone out, hadn't locked the inner door, and the dog tried to bite the delivery guy who suddenly appeared in the hall. Second time, I'd only nipped home to use the loo. Was sat on the toilet with the door wide open (luckily not quite in view from the front door) when the door opened and it was Amazon delivery again. I'm now exceptionally careful to make sure the internal door is locked, even when im home, if i'm expecting a delivery from them. They're bloody cheeky.

BudgetBuster · Today 02:39

The fact the door was left wide open (which isnt in your OP), makes me wonder did you accidentally leave it open yourself?

Zanatdy · Today 02:50

Pretty surprised that people find it unacceptable that delivery drivers are trying people’s doors and putting parcels inside. An enclosed porch is one thing, but opening their back door, no. OP could have been naked in the kitchen or having wild sex on the worktop. OP is entitled to privacy in her own home and delivering a parcel does not give the driver any entitlement to go inside. Glad to see the company agrees.

Of course it’s the usual MN posters who will always argue the opposite. Everyone would have said YABU if you had posted and said amazon didn’t deliver your parcel and you’re annoyed as they could have tried the back door and left it inside.

OP said at best perhaps the driver tried to close it and it could have blown open. She did not say the door was left wide open all day.

SonyaLoosemore · Today 05:25

Thank goodness your cat is OK. Of course a delivery driver should not have opened the door, but I have seen several posts on here complaining that they do this.

rwalker · Today 05:30

I wouldn’t waste your time and energy

nothing can change what happened and more to the point it’s very unlikely anything will and can happen off the back of your complaint

you’ll get an apology nobody will be remotely bothered about and possibly a goodwill voucher

what do you think will happen if you complain
