Link to spreadsheet of Labour MPS calling for resignation - https://x.com/GuidoFawkes/status/2053925699824574889

Streeting has to make his move now, Starmer will never be this weak and he has the chance to go now.

Burnham might be more likely to win, but he is not in, and where exactly is a safe seat by election they could parachute him in for? (nowhere)

So - Streeting will never have a better chance of being PM, he pulls the trigger NOW or he never pulls it at all.

I did say on Thursday that I thought it would be Friday or Monday.... Tuesday is a pretty good guess.

This is a quiet Bat People moment... That Speech... not worth remembering...

I remember Boris Johnson ‘ digging in’ for a while as well a few years ago. He was even drawing up new budget plans. He finally went , but it took a day or more I think before he finally left.
I think it’s a bad look to try and carry on. I can see why they do though.

It’s the EU reset. He wants to go down in history as repairing the UKs relationship with the EU.

Brussels will tear him a new one, if he survives today.

He’s weak and they know it.

SapphOhNo · 12/05/2026 09:27

I think Beth Rigby’s question hit the nail on the head. The UK feels close to ungovernable because no politician wants to level with the public that things are genuinely difficult and there are no quick fixes after years of low growth, avoidable but predictable damage from Brexit, underinvestment, and global instability. Every debate gets reduced to slogans instead of practical reality.

The EU “reset” also needs defining properly. Having a closer relationship with Europe isn’t some betrayal, as it will undoubtedly be labelled by client right-wing media, Reform, and the usual grifters, but it’s basic economic and geopolitical common sense. The US under Trump has shown it’s not a consistently reliable ally, while Europe is still our biggest trading partner and closest neighbours. A customs union or deeper alignment would help reduce trade barriers and economic damage without reopening the full “rejoin” debate. The irony is that the people screaming “betrayal” rarely explain how permanent economic friction with our largest market is somehow patriotic.

Interestingly, that's "Rupert Lowe's number one line, it's going to be really hard, sorry, but we have to and I'm the only one to tell you the truth"

John McDonnell, the Labour leftwinger and shadow chancellor under Jeremy Corbyn, has accused Wes Streeting, the health secretary, of launching a “coup” against Keir Starmer. He posted this on social media this morning.

I called for time for serious discussion, no precipitous coup & fully democratic process if leadership election.Instead Wes Streeting has launched coup for fear of a democratic process & whilst candidates are blocked. Handing leadership to Mandelson’s protege is gift to Reform

Yeah, but the problem is that Rupert Lowe and Restore Britain’s approach to “telling hard truths” seems to boil down to culture war grievance, mass deportations, hostility to immigration, and pretending Britain’s economic problems can be solved by anger and nationalism alone

Saying “things are hard” isn’t automatically brave or honest if the actual solutions being offered are simplistic, economically damaging, or politically impossible. It’s easy to sound truthful when you diagnose public frustration much harder to offer serious answers that don’t just scapegoat minorities, international institutions, or migrants for every structural problem the country has.

That is a hefty briefing against. There’ll be more if it’s Streeting v Burnham / left v right of party.

Still polling at 10% despite never appearing on any national or local media.

They won all ten seats they contested in the locals the other day. He is clearly speaking to some people successfully.

Briefing like that will really damage Labour as people from left and right want their side and run with it. But it’s kind of inevitable.

If they do this I'll never hope for anything again. I'm livid with these irresponsible MPs - what on earth are they thinking. I have voted Labour all my life, we wait 14 long years for another government and then this is what they do - basically gifting the country to Reform. If I lived somewhere that arrogant fuck Burnham tried to parachute into I would vote for the looney party in the by-election.

Well said.Very much my line of thinking at the moment....

Probably also true

I am genuinely hoping for a snap election on the basis of 2 party is dead, we need PR, that happens, we get a second election based on PR and then everyone in the country feels they have a voice and it's heard, Restore all the way to the Greens.

Then we compromise on the way to run the place

And I hate every one of those despicable, self serving, unintelligent MPs. I am so tired of our MPs being motivated by self interest.

It is not Starmer.

It is the Labour Party + global economy + history.

It does not matter who runs the Labour Party, it will not form the majority govt after the next general election. God knows who will, but guaranteed it will be worse than the present government.

And god help any one earning over £25k if Burnham gets in. But mini-me Farage is a million times worse. Look at what his hero has done to the American economy. But more importantly how he’s eviscerated democratic institutions.

And god help any one earning over £25k if Burnham gets in.

Why?

MyFellowScroller · 12/05/2026 09:44

It’s the EU reset. He wants to go down in history as repairing the UKs relationship with the EU.
Do you think that he really believes he could do this? Not that he will get the chance but could UK, under different management get a meaningful deal from EU?
We know they want €7Bn as an entry fee to the Defence contracts. Germany and France are very much against 'cherry picking' a few aspects of the EU. Starmer, Labour and even the left wingers here on MN are sounding a bit desperate in trying to unwind Brexit.
That will not help us get an affordable deal.

Absolutely and he needs the deal more than Brussels does.

I really do believe that this is will be his legacy and he ain’t going nowhere until he locks in the framework for the reset.

My wish is that he doesn’t survive today.

I don't think we'll have a general election until 4.5 years into the term but do support PR - even if it brings in parties who I fundamentally disagree with (restore/reform).

Not entirely sure that will cut it….as in save Starmer.
