Link to spreadsheet of Labour MPS calling for resignation - https://x.com/GuidoFawkes/status/2053925699824574889

Streeting has to make his move now, Starmer will never be this weak and he has the chance to go now.

Burnham might be more likely to win, but he is not in, and where exactly is a safe seat by election they could parachute him in for? (nowhere)

So - Streeting will never have a better chance of being PM, he pulls the trigger NOW or he never pulls it at all.

I did say on Thursday that I thought it would be Friday or Monday.... Tuesday is a pretty good guess.

This is a quiet Bat People moment... That Speech... not worth remembering...

There could be a by election that Andy Burnham has to win with a fair to huge majority ( ideally ) to be an MP and be sworn in to Westminster and then he can decide if he wants to run to be PM. Won’t the people in this constituency think this is a bit off and say no ?..
It’s a long shot isn’t it and very transparent. Everyone will know it’s only being done for one reason and not for the good of wherever he is standing. A lot of people won’t vote or vote against him.
Anyway, it’s clear that by not allowing him to stand earlier this year has come back to bite the PM.
Who’d be a politician. I can imagine there are lots of heads in hands going on today somewhere. Or drinking. What a week it’s been.

Swiftie1878 · 14/05/2026 17:31

Sorry, it’s Makerfield, not Macclesfield. Misheard.

Another poster here reminded me that Andy Burnham came second to Jeremy Corbyn all those years ago. I don’t know what that says, but I suspect nothing good

igelkott2026 · 14/05/2026 17:41

If Burnham wins the seat, Starmer can stand down 6 months before the next GE and assuming he's elected as leader, Burnham can take them into it. I don't know how popular he actually is, but it would be a far better idea than a GE now.

That was because a load of new people joined Labour and voted for Corbyn just for fun. I think they've tightened their rules since then.

The leadership challenge, if there is one, is a totally different issue from a GE. One does not lead to the other.

Third time lucky for AB then if it all goes to plan..
It took Nigel Farage seven attempts to become an MP , so it may work for him. Still a long way to go and a by election to get through. People might not be that forgiving and go Green. Interesting times.

You’re comparing two different things: standing to become party leader (in AB’s case) and standing to become an MP (in Nigel Farage’s case).

I suppose I was just making the point that people in politics don’t give up on what they want really. They have to play the long game sometimes to get it

Oh, I see - sorry I misunderstood. I wonder whether the constituency might vote Reform? I have a hunch it might.

feellikeanalien · 14/05/2026 18:48

Well I've just been listening to a discussion onTimes radio and apparently the MP who is standing down had a 6000 majority but in the recent local elections the councils in in both parts of the constituency went to Reform. They also came second in the GE.

I have a nasty feeling that Labour may have shot themselves in the foot here.

Burnham could stand and lose and Labour could also lose the mayoralty in Manchester.

The country really doesn't need this and ironically the latest growth figures show that for the latest period we had the strongest growth in the G7 including on a per capita basis.

I can't believe all the good news coming out today about the economy growing, NHS cutting waiting lists, strongest growth in the G7 - shame it didn't all come out before the local elections!

I think your worries are well-founded and may come true.

I’ve not heard we’ve had the strongest G7 growth figures on a per capita basis. It was only 0.3% growth and may well be revised down, so it’s nothing to shout about. That makes it all the more ridiculous we’re selling it as ‘the highest G7 growth per capita’. Surely everyone can see how desperate we are??

I don’t think either bit of news gives much cause for celebration, to be honest.

That’s not Labpur shooting themselves. In the foot. That’s Burnham shooting them in the foot. Resigning MP headed Mc Sweeney’s think tank.

0.6

It was 0.3% growth, not 0.6%.

From the Guardian: “Chancellor says ‘now not the time to put economic stability at risk’ as ONS records 0.3% growth in first month of Iran war.”

I don’t think 0.3% growth is much growth at all, and I’m expecting the ONS will revise it down, as they did at least twice for previous months. I also don’t think the NHS target is that impressive, as it’s not particularly ambitious, and the performance of 10 hospital trusts actually got worse rather than improving.

I am a Labour voter, I want the government to succeed and I think KS has his heart in the right place, but I just don’t think these particular pieces of news are that impressive.

0.6% in the first three months of the year.

Who here thinks WS was a good Health Secretary? I don’t think he was that effective, personally.
