Link to spreadsheet of Labour MPS calling for resignation - https://x.com/GuidoFawkes/status/2053925699824574889

Streeting has to make his move now, Starmer will never be this weak and he has the chance to go now.

Burnham might be more likely to win, but he is not in, and where exactly is a safe seat by election they could parachute him in for? (nowhere)

So - Streeting will never have a better chance of being PM, he pulls the trigger NOW or he never pulls it at all.

I did say on Thursday that I thought it would be Friday or Monday.... Tuesday is a pretty good guess.

This is a quiet Bat People moment... That Speech... not worth remembering...

If I had been told that clearly by my boss, how shit I was doing a job I’d probably leave in shame at night without telling anybody

Really? I don’t believe you. Most people make sure they secure the job, do better or move on. What no one does nearly ever is move aside because your junior colleague tells you to.

ByGraptharsHammer · 14/05/2026 14:11

Anyway, this probably tells you the Labour picture and why Starmer didn’t fall on his sword.

If I were the PM I’d get the other cabinet members together at a meeting and ask them if they are going to resign or if they back me. At least get some ‘ ducks in a row ‘ as it can’t be easy to find out who is against you and who is for you without some blunt talking to see what support you have left. Usually others follow a resignation , but I can’t see the Chancellor doing anything at all and that would be a blow for him if she stepped aside now ( for Starmer, I’m sure others might be cheering that on)
Call their bluff I suppose I’m saying. Not sure how it works though. He needs a few allies to carry on doesn’t he. They all have the ability to back stab. Seen it all before. It’s just sad it’s another party in power with all the same old infighting that the conservatives have had not that long ago.

Looks like Streeting has blown up his career for nothing:

I think they want Burnham back in place. They being everyone bar Starmer allies.

I don’t think @SingleSexSpacesInSchools knows what they’re talking about here, because they’ve never had a proper job.

Exactly. I’m pretty sure Starmer knew that and so did Streeting who thought his coronation strategy would avoid these problems

No one knows if that’s the case. His letter points to wanting a broad range of people. He’s right to want this, there’s no point in pushing through without mandate, he’d have mutiny again.

ByGraptharsHammer · 14/05/2026 14:19

I really didn’t take that element of the letter seriously. What he meant was, I don’t want a one on one contest with you that I know will lose (see poll above).

the80sweregreat · 14/05/2026 14:21

Maybe Streeting knows the resident Doctors will carry on striking and wanting more money and thought ‘ I can’t do that anymore’ ? Someone just said this on lbc just now and it rang true to me , even if it’s only musings.

Up to you. There’s no point in Streeting going for it without others as he probably would lose. Now it’s up to Burnham and whether he wants to make a move. And others.

Quite a few in the cabinet and unions have said he needs to be out before the next GE, the way they’ll drag it out they may as well crack on rather than have all this ammunition against the current leader. It’s easy for everyone to point at his loss of authority over many in his party.

He’ll try to stay on but eventually Burnham will go for it, and he does poll better.

ByGraptharsHammer · 14/05/2026 14:27

The letter is the admission that Streeting does not have the numbers, but would very much like a job in Cabinet with whoever the next leader is, which will now not be him.

Great as long as it happens and there’s a change. It’s going to take ages looking at their manoeuvres.

Why do you think this? I didn’t get that feeling from the letter.

ByGraptharsHammer · 14/05/2026 14:33

I wouldn’t get excited. The amount of manoeuvres being made by Labour top brass probably means that this admittedly disengenous plea for a broad conversation will not happen.

Streeting is on the right of the Labour Party and a Blairite. That makes him a minority in Labour and ironically more aligned with Starmer (and he has just burned his bridges permanently there). The numbers for him as a leader with the Labour membership are not good (see poll above).

Thus the letter says, I accept that I will have to revise my beliefs after the broad conversation and fit in with the next leader (likely more the left than me). It’s a well written letter, but makes a silks purse out of a sows ear. He did not have the numbers. He could not get his coronation. He was humiliated by his PM yesterday. He is saying he is still prepared to contribute his skills after Starmer is gone.

Anyway, my take, there will be others. His gambit has failed.

I still don’t understand how that shows WS doesn’t have the numbers of MPs needed to back him.

That’s my inference. If he had, he could have started the contest legitimately.

This was a bit like Boris who told everyone he had the numbers but couldn’t beat Rishi Sunak. People will tell you what you want to hear. Streeting could have moved but didn’t. 94 MPs saying they don’t like KS is not what he needed.

I never said had to I said will be forced to by the strength of public opinion. Labour are sunk they cannot last three years it will not happen.

There will be no early GE. Labour waited 14 years for power. They won’t just surrender it now. Last week’s results show they’d lose, badly.

I agree they will not call an early GE

But Labour have form of self destructing and they are pretty much doing that right now,

thankfully this is potentially three years before the next GE so could all be forgiven and forgotten by many voters
