This year, I’ve seen:

Pride: The Musical
Phantom of the Opera in London
Under Milk Wood
I also streamed National Theatre’s The Importance of Being Earnest at home, but not sure if it counts.

I also have these booked for this year:

Oliver! In London
Operation Mincemeat
Owain and Henry

How does stream plays compare to the real thing? My local theatre shows national theatre plays and I’ve been unsure whether it’s worth viewing them like that

It's really worth it. I've seen all sorts of great stuff as a live stream. You get so int it you pretty much forget. Off the top of my head I can think of Prima Facie, La Fille Mal Gardee, Woof Works (mentioned above), The Importance of Being Earnest with Ncuti Gatwa - and a load more
So affordable, and so handy if you don't have easy access to London theatres.

greentreeseverywhere · 11/05/2026 19:17

paddington (very kind christmas present!)
mean girls (on tour)
matilda (on tour)
thats it for this year unless something come up on kids week

There are threads on the Culture Vultures Board where people discuss shows they have seen! Culture vultures | Mumsnet

This year:
Playboy of the Western World - NT
Lost Atoms - Frantic Assembly
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry
Man and Boy - NT
The Book of Mormon
Summerfolk - NT
Ukraine Unbroken - Arcola
Teeth.n.Smiles
Liaison Dangereuse - NT
Inter Alia
My Uncle is Not Pablo Escobar - Brixton House

To come: The Tempest and Grace Pervades

A lot! But I never pay more than about £25 and some of these shows for £10.

I live in London so can get to shows at short notice so can use the NT Friday Rush, TodaysTix, and get discount tix for previews etc,

Wistfulwisteria · 11/05/2026 19:23

Moulin Rouge

seeing the Sherlock Holmes one at Regent’s Park in a couple of weeks and Chicago on broadway later in the year.

BusySittingDown · 11/05/2026 19:27

In October we saw Beetlejuice on Broadway, so not this year but I thought it was worth mentioning 😂.

This year I have seen:
Mean Girls
Matilda

I have booked:
Waitress
Legally Blonde

I'm hoping to get some more booked in.

pinkandteal · 11/05/2026 19:30

This year I’ve seen Back to the Future and Cabaret in London. Matt Willis was amazing as the Emcee.

Touring productions of Miss Saigon, Legally Blonde, Barnum.

Later this year I’ve booked Sweeney Todd, Operation Mincemeat (can’t wait for this!), Paddington, Choir of Man, Love Never Dies and Beetlejuice.

I don’t go on holidays, I see musicals instead 😂

SinuousTendrils · 11/05/2026 19:31

Henry V
The Resistable Rise of Arturo Ui - probably the best play I've seen.

Galaxylights · 11/05/2026 19:32

Tina turner. Absolutely wonderful show.

LoserWinner · 11/05/2026 19:33

Since January:
Playboy of the Western World
The Rat Trap
Arcadia
Indian Ink
Here there are Blueberries
HMS Pinafore
I’m Sorry Prime Minister
Mrs President
Lost Atoms
Iolanthe
16 Postcards
The Holy Rosenbergs
Shadowlands
Sweetmeats
Blink
Broken Glass
Lifeline
Invisible Me
This is not about me
Two
Mother Courage and her Children
An Ideal Husband

plus several operas, ballets and a couple of dozen music concerts.

BeardySchnauzer · 11/05/2026 19:36

Recently saw Grace pervades

was ok but I don’t get the impression David Hare likes/understands women.

PurpleFlower1983 · 11/05/2026 19:37

Prime Facie starring Jodie Comer, unbelievably amazing. That woman is an incredible actress.

With the kids:

Lion King, my 4 year old’s first West End show.
Starlight Express at Wembley Park
The BFG at Chichester

Later in the year:

Paddington (with the kids)
Dog Man: The Musical (with the kids)
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Starring Gillian Anderson
Peter Pan - local panto

There will probably be a few others.

SomethingFun · 11/05/2026 19:47

Freaky Friday
Singing in the Rain
Horrible Histories musical
Priscilla
Percy Jackson the musical
The Boy at the Back of the Class

Coming up:
Karate Kid - the musical
Midsummer Murders
Six
The spy who came in from the cold
Annie
Mallory Towers
High School Musical
Cats
Paddington

Apart from Paddington most of these shows are £35-50 a ticket which is reasonable for a show imho. Priscilla and Karate Kid were £15 for the stalls. I’ve done the theatre at the cinema but I thought £20 was a lot for a recording when it’s £5 to see a film.

LlamaDuke · 11/05/2026 19:51

I've seen:
Top Hat
Murder at Midnight
Choir of Man
Operation Mincemeat
Hercules

Yet to see:
The Constant Wife
Thespians
Midsomer Murders
High Society
Jersey Boys
Present Laughter
Comedy of Spies
Hay Fever
Sinatra the Musical

I know that seems like a lot (which it is), but it's our 30th wedding anniversary this year and we're doing this instead of a party or big holiday. We had a very low key wedding when we got married that suited our families rather than us, and we've never really had much money to treat ourselves until the last couple of years, so chose our 30th to push the boat out a bit and see what we wanted.

Mind you, we could've gone away somewhere really fancy for a week for the small fortune we've spent on tickets!

Hoork · 11/05/2026 19:55

Emma

Bambi1609 · 11/05/2026 19:55

Seen:

Prince of Egypt
Stranger things
Greatest showman
Choir of man
Christmas Carol goes wrong

Booked:
High life
Thespians
Paddington
Beetlejuice
Hunger games
Something Rotten
Karate Kid
Hamilton with Leslie Odom
Piff and Pop
Six
Operation mincemeat
Back to the future.

We are big theatre fans and get tickets or vouchers for birthdays/Christmas/anniversary/mothers and fathers day which helps with the costs along with being signed up to a couple of membership schemes

Uniaccomm · 11/05/2026 17:27

Just Kinky Boots (which was just fabulous). Hoping cheaper tickets might become available for Jesus Christ Superstar as the weeks go on.

Have you seen they have released on stage standing tickets and some front row seats which are more reasonable?

Not sure how many are left but there were a fairly few yesterday. The standing is about 25 and I think the front row had some 60 ones. Not cheaper but better!

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 11/05/2026 19:59

Seen;
Six
Macbeth
We will rock you (amdram but amazing)
Blues Brothers

Booked;
Six (dd loves it)

Hoping for
Lion king

There are cheaper ways to see things, book early, sears higher up and not in the stalls. We did Harry Potter twice at £25/seat/show for front row on one of the higher areas. Great views and much more affordable.

GoodkneeBadKnee · 11/05/2026 20:01

In the past 12 months I've seen
Devil wears Prada (twice)
Kinky Boots
Hercules
Book of Mormon
Matilda
The great Gatsby

tapdancingmum · 11/05/2026 20:02

The Hunger Games, Mama Mia and The Lion King so far. We have tickets for the opening night of Jesus Christ Superstar and I am beyond excited for that.

Hoping to see Six at our local theatre in July as well. I suppose I better book some tickets.

NBParking · 11/05/2026 20:03

Six and Wicked

GoodkneeBadKnee · 11/05/2026 20:03

Also have seen in the past 2 years
Six
Burlesque
Jersey Boys
Moulin Rouge
Choir of Man
Hamilton

jdb9803 · 11/05/2026 20:06

Notgonnalieaboutthis · 11/05/2026 17:24

None. The ticket prices make it impossible.

Depends where you sit - I pay less than £20 a ticket so a cheap night out

impostacosta · 11/05/2026 20:08

Six
The bodyguard
Tina
Matilda

Booked over rest of year…..
Moulin Rouge
Miss Saigon
Rocky Horror

Early next year so far booked..
Everbodys Talking About Jamie

We live in the north west, Manchester and Liverpool are both easy enough to get to and surprisingly Blackpool usually has a good line up. I always book in advance and only ever buy the cheap seats so generally only pay £40-50 in total for the pair.

impostacosta · 11/05/2026 20:09

GoodkneeBadKnee · 11/05/2026 20:01

In the past 12 months I've seen
Devil wears Prada (twice)
Kinky Boots
Hercules
Book of Mormon

The great Gatsby

How was Hercules? I love the film but it’s only on in London so I’m going to have to wait until I’m in London
