This year, I’ve seen:

Pride: The Musical
Phantom of the Opera in London
Under Milk Wood
I also streamed National Theatre’s The Importance of Being Earnest at home, but not sure if it counts.

I also have these booked for this year:

Oliver! In London
Operation Mincemeat
Owain and Henry

Touring production of Miss Saigon earlier this year. Les Miserables on Saturday in the West End - seen it numerous times - just love it. Got tickets for A Man for All Seasons with Martin Shaw in the autumn

The Tempest

To Kill a Mockingbird

Witness for the Prosecution

Saw Road at the Royal Exchange. It was OK, patchy. Interesting use of the theatre outside the auditorium.

Tickets for a couple of other things later this year.

You do know this thread is about to be inundated by people telling you they can’t afford theatre and you’re a tone deaf elitist, don’t you?

Edited

I saw Road at the exchange as well.
I loved how they made use of the whole auditorium.

My mum and I do our best to see at least one musical each year. We’ve been to Priscilla Queen of the Desert this year and we also have Cats booked for December.

I also volunteer in a local am-dram theatre although I’ve recently had a break due to medical reasons. But through there I’ve watched our dress rehearsals of Steel Magnolias and The Diary of Anne Frank this year. Our next production is the youth group doing The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and the next adult production is The Full Monty so I’m hoping I can get along to support both of those. We have 39 Steps and Frankenstein coming later in the year (I should hopefully be back helping by Frankenstein at the latest) then our panto is Dick Whittington so quite a mix of shows.

tilypu · 11/05/2026 18:31

Prima Facie and One Day.

Also went to Murder Trial: Death of a Landlord, which I think counts.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 11/05/2026 18:38

So far...

Ballet Shoes
Operation Mincemeat
Moulin Rouge (again)
Mary Queen of Scots (ballet)
Mayerling

Coming up...

La Fille Mal Gardée
Flamenco Gala at Sadlers Wells
Matthew Bourne's new "Carman" ballet

I gave up smoking last year which is how I can afford tickets.

How does stream plays compare to the real thing? My local theatre shows national theatre plays and I’ve been unsure whether it’s worth viewing them like that

AllaMova · 11/05/2026 18:44

weareallcats · 11/05/2026 17:54

Henry V and The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui at the RSC - very lucky to be local. Nothing in London yet this year - I’d like to see Cabaret.

Upcoming I have more RSC - The Tempest, The Cherry Orchard, The Mad King, Middlemarch. Also The Car Man (Matthew Bourne).

I’m desperate to see The Cherry Orchard. I really hope it tours next year, but I doubt it will. 🤞🏽

Edit: Sorry, pressed send too soon.

It’s nowhere near as good as the real thing, but it’s well worth it if it’s the only way you can watch the play.

We loved The Importance of Being Earnest, but I wasn’t fully engrossed in the show because I watched it at home.

Theatre is an experience shared between the cast and audience, so we miss that element via steaming.

I really enjoy them. They are reasonably cheap at our community cinema, seats are comfortable and it’s very local so we can get to them mid week after work. I often see things that I probably wouldn’t have thought to see at the theatre, so it is broadening the range of plays I see

CatkinToadflax · 11/05/2026 18:51

Paddington
Hamlet streamed into local cinema
Ballet Shoes streamed at home
Various local am dram shows as DS is a young actor. We have a lot of great stuff on in our town that can be of a very high standard in spite of being amateur.

TorroFerney · 11/05/2026 18:55

Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club- excellent
Macbeth (Bolton Octagon) excellent performance and venue. went for the teenager as it's on the GCSE exam but loved it it
Road at the Royal Exchange Manchester - enjoyed it
Priscilla Queen of the Desert Manchester - the entire party thought it was awful. Peter Duncan (blue Peter ) cannot act.

Seeing later in the year - Othello at the Royal Exchange and we are going to London in August so will book to see something - teenager will want Hamilton but we've seen it a few times.

PoppySaidYesIKnow · 11/05/2026 18:56

Mary Poppins
The Beekeeper of AleppO
Miss Saigon
Macbeth
The Signalman
Going to watch To Kill a Mockingbird this weekend.

Agree, I have seen two Macbeths and Vanya with Andrew Scott and I thought they were really good. I saw them at our local Everyman, not cheap but I suppose half way between cinema and theatre.

Didntask · 11/05/2026 18:59

Went to see The Lion King again a little while ago, was just as wonderful as the first time 😊

I saw Road. I liked standing to Jonny Vegas at the bar - it dragged a bit at the end and I wasn't invested in the teenagers in the bed - I wanted the end to come for them!!

Bedroomdilemmas113 · 11/05/2026 19:00

Miss Saigon
Moulin Rouge
The Bodyguard
Devil Wears Prada
Choir of Man
Mary Poppins
Mean Girls

Possibly a couple of others that I have forgotten, I go a lot.

Timeforatincture · 11/05/2026 19:04

I like the live shows in the cinema. It's cheaper and you get a much better view of the performance than you'd get in the cheap seats.
