To think social media made everyone think their opinion is important?

Some views are uninformed, recycled or just loud. AIBU to think silence is underrated?

before social media it was the talk at the pubs, personally i love to chat with anyone however whats puzzling is when noone or hardly anyone studies the complexity of various issues,

InterestingDuck · 10/05/2026 19:13

I think (some) people have always thought their opinions were important - social media now gives them another place to air them, with a potentially wider audience.

Yourangduckie · 10/05/2026 19:34

I voted YABU because I don't think social media has made everyone think that. There has always been people who think their views are more important than others. I like that social media gives everyone a voice whether I agree with their opinions or not, I certainly wouldn't look down my noise at people who may not have a grasp of things or as I see frequently repeat soundbites from the media because I realise that everyone in society has different levels of education and understanding for many, many different reasons.

Yes and misinformation is spread like wildfire while those who spout rubbish find their opinions being confirmed and read world-wide (unlike what used to take place in the pub which was confined to smaller groups)

I’ve always enjoyed hearing different perspectives on things, but I find someone super opinionated annoying and quite close-minded.

I think this is why I prefer reading/participating in forums or long-form content because maybe it’s less sensational than short-form content like TikTok and tends to usually be more thought out.

i dont mind opinionated people as long as they know their topics they talk about in depth

I think it's important that people's views and opinions are not silenced, even if they are uninformed and I completely disagree with them.

Plus with enough discussion, many people's views change over time.

Brightbluesomething · 10/05/2026 20:27

If you support free speech then you have to accept that people will have different views, some of them you won’t agree with, and some of them will be loud. Scrolling past what you disagree with is an option though.

lljkk · 10/05/2026 20:32

I don't think it's new that some people are convinced that their opinions are important. Always been the case that many people like to air their opinions. Agree that it's refreshing to be reminded that we don't need to have an opinion about most things.

ClockClocCloClC · 10/05/2026 20:32

Yep. Social media is now the favoured home of the modern-day pub bore and self-important windbag.

I’ve seen people I know, ordinary people, post long announcements like their public figures.

Still, whatever gets you through the day.
