AIBU to worry about eating defrosted kippers after 48 hours?

I’m just looking for some reassurance really.

I defrosted some kippers in the fridge and didn’t realise they were meant to be eaten within 24 hours. They ended up being in the fridge for about 48 hours after defrosting.

They looked and smelt completely fine, so I cooked them thoroughly in a kedgeree and ate them.

I only realised afterwards that I’d gone over the recommended time and now I’m a bit worried I’ve done something unsafe.
Also it said eat within a month and it’s been shortly over that since freezing.

Has anyone done similar or know how risky this actually is? I know the guidance is there for a reason, but wondering if I’ve overreacted or if I should be keeping an eye out for anything.

Thanks in advance 🙂

I think you’ll be fine. I use dates as a guide but if something looks and smells ok I eat it. My thinking is when I was growing up use by dates etc weren’t a thing.

Bit difficult to assess with kippers

Just a bit panicky now - I feel a bit stupid.

They were kept in the fridge

I’m sure you will be fine. Don’t panic!

Worrymonsters · 09/05/2026 21:56

My DH thinks they’ll be fine as they’re smoked so they’d be preserved.

I was just going to say smoking is a preservative

BauhausOfEliott · 09/05/2026 22:19

Smoked fish lasts for ages. It will be absolutely fine.

You'll be fine but if you die please come back and let us know so we don't take the risk.

ColdAsAWitches · 09/05/2026 23:49

You'll be fine.

I don't even know why kippers would be frozen. They are smoked to preserve them, they don't need freezing.
