ID'd for laxatives at 30

neveraskingtime · 09/05/2026 19:42

Why do I need ID to buy laxatives? I am so constipated and bloated. I tried to explain to the clerk that I'm 30 and have a buy to let mortgage.

Shop assistants and delivery drivers will tend to stick to the letter of the law and not take the risk of being flexible or using common sense.
When I replaced a breadknife recently, I had to prove that I was over 18 (despite the "silver highlights" and walking aid), and give my year of birth, at which the delivery driver had the gallantry to feign astonishment.
On a practical note, as you pursue your quest for relief, you might like to try strong coffee.

xanthomelana · 09/05/2026 21:28

If it makes you feel better you have to be 12 to buy Christmas crackers and 16 for party poppers.

Sharp objects = bad
Heavy blunt objects = okay

The laws around selling things are crazy sometimes.

Jamieson90 · 09/05/2026 22:17

I work in a shop.

Is it fun asking someone who is clearly older than 18 but who looks under 25 for ID to buy something like a Redbull? No.

You know what's even less fun? Listening to people bitch and kick off at staff who are only doing their job, like we don't hear it every single day....

You know what's even less fun than that? Failing a test purchase. Sorry, I'll just face a fine and prosecution oh and losing my job because you made the choice not to have ID.

It's 2026, everyone asks for ID these days...

This is bullshit. People can and do lose their jobs when they get it wrong.
For me, as I have got older, I find it very hard to judge age. It is always best to ask for ID than to lose your job.

We have so much stuff to do on a shift that I just want to serve you and get you on your way. The last thing I want is an argument over ID.

Do you know what the consequences are for failing a test purchase? Maybe do some research and you'll see it from the other side. If you can't be bothered to do that then the TLDR is that it really, really sucks.

Finally, you're an adult, you know there's a chance you might be ID'd when purchasing ARS (Age Restricted Sales).

You made the choice not to have ID.

Instead of taking personal responsibility you're now blaming and moaning at others.

Choices were made.

When people make a test purchase, and they’re clearly well over the required age, do you still fail the test if you haven’t asked for ID

Shops send test purchasers in between the age of 18 and 25 and if you don't ask your in trouble. Police send in under 18s and if you don't ask then your in serious trouble

Maybe take it as a compliment that you look younger than you are... and carry ID.

alpenguin · 09/05/2026 22:55

I was ID’d for a lottery ticket at 40 and alcohol at 42. Perimenopausal spots clearly doing their job well! This stuff happened doesn’t anymore sadly. Just take your driving licence or go to Asda for senakot off the shelf. They dontID anyone at my local asda

CelticSilver · 09/05/2026 22:59

I was age checked for buying some little cocktail forks. It would've taken about a year to stab someone to death with one. Also, I'm 50 🤷‍♂️

Yeah as Youalright said, there are two types.

Both are potential job at risk discipinary actions but if you fail one by police / trading standards then the young person will be under 18 and you're not simply breaking company policy but actually breaking the law and commiting a criminal offence. In all my time in retail I've never seen that go well. The authorities take a very dim view of that and rightfully so really.

Allthesnowallthetime · 09/05/2026 23:02

I had similar in Lidl recently. For a garlic crusher.

I don't know what damage they thought I could do with a garlic crusher.

I was trying to highlight that I am way past ID age.

I was a teenage anorexic buying so many laxatives I had to steal them….not everyone is taking them cos they can’t go for a shit!

You must have some form of ID if you have a mortgage?

Ah, you aren't in the UK then. Here everyone who applies for a mortgage / buys a property needs ID. It's to do with preventing money laundering.

I hope you are feeling less congested and shouty now.

The company does 'test purchases' so they send in under 25's to attempt to purchase the restricted items. Some of the test purchasers are 23 /24.

If the cashier 'fails' and does not request ID it is taken extremely seriously & disciplinary action.

It's very hard to judge age just on looking at someone's face quickly & some people could be anything from 17 to 30.

It's not unlikely for people to be asked for ID well into their 30's . (I was ID'd at 40!)

There was a big campaign to make laxatives age restricted due to the number of teenage girls misusing them in the mistaken belief they helped with weight loss.

If you were as rude to my staff as you've been on here then you would not be purchasing anything let alone the laxatives.
