Sugar free monster. Oh sorry, just saw you wanted caffeine free. I absolutely cannot get going in the morning without caffeine, because I already take drugs that slow me down!

I step outside as soon as I get up, and drink some water. Can’t explain why, but it wakes me up much more effectively than coffee even if it’s only for a couple of seconds.

I usually only manage a mouthful or two of water, but a few minutes later I feel really thirsty and can drink a couple of glassfuls. I might have a cup of rooibos if I want a hot drink but I don’t have that craving for a caffeine boost.

The mornings I don’t do this, I don’t manage to drink much water, and I tend to drink lots of teas and coffees.

Fruit juice?

Sugar overload as soon as you wake up? Not a good idea…

Water kept in the fridge with oranges and lemons cut into slices, but replace it every 3 or 4 days.

Liquorice tea! I buy chopped dried liquorice root and put it into an infuser then steep it in freshly boiled water.

It's delicious, healthy and I could drink gallons of it, but we sadly can only have max 3 tsp of the dried root a day or it stops being good for us and can cause health problems.

Warm to hot water with ginger and lemon or just warm water and a pinch of salt, I drink it outside in my back garden which wakes me up properly. Caffeine makes me sleepy!

(I suspect I am autistic) but I only drink water. I can’t stand the sensation and taste of warm/hot drinks, fizzy drinks, alcohol and any fruit juices.

I’ve started having an electrolyte hydration sachet. Like vibrate/hydrava sort of thing

My main issue is that I feel like I drink an absolutely insane amount of coffee and it must be bad for my body. I have at least 5 cups a day.
But now its got me thinking.. maybe instead of trying to find a replacement for something I clearly like, I could instead get myself some really nice coffee which means its so precious I only have one cup in the morning and really savour it??

decaf coffees? You could alternate them with real ones.

I don’t think multiple coffees a day is too bad for you though?

Why do you think coffee is "bad for your body"? Is it based on anything or just your guess?

Coffee is good for you, and as long as you don't find it makes you anxious or suffer from insomnia I would crack on. 5 a day is not an "insane" amount, by the way.

I drink Chicory. You can buy it in Holland and Barrett or on Amazon. I usually use three heaped teaspoons in a mug. Add whatever you would normally have in coffee. It tastes nice - I sometimes put Sweet Freedom caramel syrup in it to give an extra boost but it is fine without. I have been drinking this for about ten years as I can’t drink caffeine or coffee because of a stomach issue.

I've contemplated this a few times in Holland and Barret - if you don't mind me asking, what does it taste like, is it comparable to anything taste-wise?

I'm stingy and hate food waste so am always reluctant to try new things but would like a hot drink alternative!

EBearhug · 10/05/2026 00:03

I mostly just drink water. When it's really cold, I'll have a fruit tea (blackcurrant, lemon & ginger, liquorice) or mint tea. Hot Bovril (not for vegetarians.) Caffeine-free Coke, though not till the afternoon.

Colleagues have long and tediously detailed expensive coffee discussions, so that's definitely an option...

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/05/2026 00:03

You lost me at not getting excited about tea, tbh

Davros · 10/05/2026 13:35

I don’t like coffee and, after years wishing I did, I am now very happy I don’t like it as it seems such a tyranny for some people. I love tea but have conceded to Half-Caff at night
