No compost bins, clear undergrowth, no feeding the birds (like a supermarket for rats), wash out bins. Clear area around home. Rats are everywhere, just don't give them a reason to be in yours.

I live behind some old farm buildings so there are plenty of rats. Or were. Also in the countryside.
My next door neighbour has three cats. I have two ex ferals who spend all day outside...their choice they have a cat flap. They come in at night.
We have no more rats.

Stop feeding birds and get a cat.

Dont think you should be feeding the birds much now. You must keep on top of rats so you should get the rat posion down. They breed like crazy, if you dont control it you will be over run. Talk to your neighbours they will need to as well.
