To pretend I cooked the restaurant food- dinner party

I’m hosting a dinner party for 7 guests tonight. I’m a truly shit cook, and my guests amongst them have loads of dietary requirements - vegan, gluten free and nut free, and one guest only likes Chinese or Italian cuisine.

i have also had to work late every day this week. I decided last night instead that I’d order from a vegan Chinese restaraunt today that clearly lists all nut free and gluten free dishes.

im embarrassed to admit ive not cooked myself, so aibu to put them into my own dishes and pass them off as my own cooking tonight?

Ha! I would totally do this. I have regularly done this for school bake sales when I've forgotten/ran out of time 😂 I didn't technically say I made them, just squashed them a bit/put them in my own tupperware to make them look like I'd done them. Someone asked me outright once and I just confessed as I can't lie properly.

Maybe serve it up in your serving dishes and say nothing unless someone outright asks you? Surely then if you just admit how busy and exhausted you've been people will understand?!

Then you are a fool.

Allergies. Sigh. Just for starters.

Just bleeding own it. That goes for the OP and you. I am honestly astonished at how many people think this might be okay.

Millymollymandy4 · 08/05/2026 17:02

I don’t think you’ll get away with it - take away Chinese is distinctive

it isn’t really a dinner party..

canuckup · 08/05/2026 17:02

Of course they'll be able to tell!

DeposedPresident · 08/05/2026 17:04

And can i just say- my older DS last year only thankfully has a peanut allergy. But at the end of the year - although being in a nut free school- a teacher made blondies with almond flour. Another child has a severe but allergy to all nuts and had to go to hospital.

Please- can I ask- for the hard of thinking at the back- don't bloody mess and muck around with food. be honest FFS.

Not really. In fact the time I did have to confess was when someone asked about ingredients.

Also, calling a stranger a fool because you don't agree with them is rude. Do better.

DeposedPresident · 08/05/2026 17:07

Did you cut out the ingredient list and stick it on the front of your tupperware container?

If not then you do better.

I am honestly speechless at your laugh emoji and your cavalier attitude. And I stand by what i said.

Millymollymandy4 · 08/05/2026 17:09

There is no way you’ll get away with it

Chinese food to take out tastes distinctively of msg and has a certain texture

it would be like ordering Macdonald’s and claiming they are homemade burgers

TheHillIsMine · 08/05/2026 17:09

Dual · 08/05/2026 12:38

Sounds silly maybe but I don’t want to be looked as an incompetent adult for failing to cook. Will they not think I’m lazy for having made nothing at all tonight? I’ve got vegan ice cream for dessert

Why do you care so much about what they think? There are a lot of requests in there, they should be grateful you're hosting them. Just ridiculous to be this stressed and to pretend you've made it.

Seniie · 08/05/2026 17:11

I’m a very good cook. You simply won’t be able to pass off Chinese takeaway as your own.

you would be able to pass off Italian restaurant food as your own, can’t you order Italian.

Overtheatlantic · 08/05/2026 17:11

They will know.

PuzzledObserver · 08/05/2026 17:13

Dual · 08/05/2026 13:49

thanks all,

what about if a compromise, I order the simple tofu dish and simple vegan chicken dish and just say I used a packet sauce mix to make the sauce? I can very easily make the base - it’s just ready made deep fried tofu and vegan chicken pieces from a shop, so it’s plausible?

the nut allergy suffer trusts restaraunt food - I’ve been out for dinner with him before. And I rang the restaurant to make sure they double check and they said they’re 100% confident the food will be nut free.

JUST. TELL. THEM.

Yes actually I did stick it on the lid.
I hope your day gets better 💐

OP- presumably you already know allergies since you have a list of dietary requirements. I'm assuming you have common sense so will already know to check for allergies with the place you're ordering from.

DeposedPresident · 08/05/2026 17:16

Oh0 but you said you squashed them and pretended they were yours.

Your story has changed. It might have helped if the version where you stuck it on the lid was in your first post.

And good for you- if you actually did that. Because that would have been sensible.

I would use my own serving dishes to look nice, but I would be open about the whole thing, and careful to check with the guests who have dietary restrictions.

RhiWrites · 08/05/2026 17:35

Say you had it catered. And then act surprised that they’d be surprised. It’s totally normal and expected! 😬

Stuck the list on the lid so I had it to hand when I was selling them because the majority of people just want to buy cake. Anyone with an allergy usually has the sense to ask before buying something- not going to go into anymore detail with some random on the internet who cannot even discuss something without name calling.

Honestly people who cannot discuss things without name calling and being rude ruin things like this it's such a shame.

Anyway, don't want to derail your post OP. I'm sure you will have a lovely evening regardless. Let us know how it goes!

GreyBudgie · 08/05/2026 12:56

Do jacket potatoes with bought sweet and sour sauce on tofu chucks or chicken for any carnivores. That way you can ensure it meets the allergy requirements. The possibility of contamination would be worse from a busy commercial kitchen I think.

Jacket fucking potatoes?! 😂🤣😂😅

Your menu suggestion is an abomination!!

Thestormishere · 08/05/2026 18:06

I’m a really great cook. Learned from the best frankly. Won’t name names. No way would I be able to make Chinese food that is comparable to restaurant bought food. Unless it’s a shitty restaurant of course.

If they do like cooking, and it’s unclear to what level given that you yourself say you don’t know about cooking, they’ll spot your lie and most likely think much less of you.

If this is the option definitely go with the jars op!! 🤣🤣

Lurkingandlearning · 08/05/2026 18:24

As you have never cooked for them before and they are your friends your cooking skills don’t matter to them. Lying to them might though.

Millymollymandy4 · 08/05/2026 18:29

You need to tell them becuase of the allergies and let the judge

xsquared · 08/05/2026 18:31

I don't get why you need to lie or tell half truths at all. It sounds like too much effort just to protect your ego.

You say you don't want to look like an incompetent cook, but surely that's better than being a known liar and untrustworthy.

If they do then they aren’t very good friends! Even the most accomplished cooks might well phone a takeaway for this lot!
Just tell you are looking forward to catching up and having a laugh and don’t want to spend time in the kitchen so will be ordering in.
Too much scope for things to go wrong if you lie.

Jllllllll · 08/05/2026 20:15

Don’t be embarrassed, they sound like quite a complicated bunch dietary wise. I’d just say I’ve ordered to suit everyone, Hope you enjoy!

PloddingAlong21 · 08/05/2026 20:20

If I had a nut allergy and you told me you cooked, I would trust it was safe.

Imagine if you didn’t tell them, cross contamination from the kitchen and a severe reaction.

tell them.
