Apparently Starmer is furious because he was not told local elections had taken place yesterday.

He has ordered an enquiry into why the elections had gone ahead without his knowledge and will sack all civil servants in charge...

Ha tbf he did try to stop millions voting.

Are you mixing up migration and people on boats?

I am not standing up for a party, I am being realistic. I applaud most of Labours things they are doing because it's making the UK less appealing to make the journey for. I am applauding their increase in processing and removing failed asylum seekers, miles better than under the tories when it pretty much stopped completely. What I do understand is this is a very difficult problem to solve.

What I am most concerned about is people in the UK voting reform because of this issue, while we end up losing the things that are great about the UK. Our human rights, our sense of fairness. Reform don't like women, they don't like the NHS, they want to get rid of the Equalities act, which protects us women. I think all of these things should be taken into account rather than just the immigration problem - and immigration is NOT the cause of all the issues in the UK anyway.

So you can’t answer my question then….

@caringcarer thanks, so no services have been cut?

The Institute for Fiscal Studies announced Reform councils have delivered the lowest average council tax rises in the country. This is onsite of Worcestershire county council raising council taxes high.

I think it's in bad faith to describe an overall halving as 'tinkering at the edges'.

Not when there is a lot more that could be done. I am not being sarcastic.
I dislike Jenrick but he was right to call immigration ‘ a business’. There is a lot of self interest in having immigration managed in the way it is.
Quality not quantity. A focus change is needed.

I did. More than you answered mine.

And you need to understand difference between visa controlled immigration and asylum seekers.

So did you expect it to happen overnight? Really? OK.

Overnight? Labour has been in power for almost two years.

No you haven’t! I asked how he’d got the figures down by smashing the gangs when all he’s done is move migrants out of hotels and into barracks and local communities!

EasternStandard · 08/05/2026 11:21

Dragonscaledaisy · 08/05/2026 11:16

Starmer was the one claiming repeatedly Labour was going to 'smash the gangs'. No one else needs to provide a solution - they are the party in power and are expected to deliver on their promises. It really is very simple.

Yep. It’s Labour’s policy, why the pp aims their failure at anyone on here idk

caringcarer · 08/05/2026 11:21

In Worcestershire Reform inherited a £600 million debt from previous administration and the only way to avoid bankruptcy was to increase CT.

There’s no point arguing with people who don’t understand the realities of how systems work. They will find out the hard way that Reform actually have no policies (apart from privatise the NHS). Let them crow today; the FAFO will follow like it has with Trump voters.

A reduction of half is high quality, objectively.

I know the difference thanks! My own kids are mixed race and their dad is a legal migrant

He’s done badly in these elections and even members of his own party want him to go yet he stands there this morning telling everyone he’s staying put! He’s deluded

I don't disagree, @Flyingintotheunknown, but if he says anything else that'll start a leadership contest, and IMO the only reason there's not been one so far is that they know the alternatives are even worse

Dear god, what a position for the nation to be in ...

Yes. On one hand I really wish KS would resign. On the other, I’d worry more about who replaces him than KS remaining PM

I thought it was hilarious that in our local area we received two flyers - Labour and Reform. Labour’s was basically filled with all the many ways they’ve helped the local area over the past few years and what they will continue to do.

Reform’s was literally their five pledges to the constituency, none of which fit within the realms of a local council. Think it was end Net Zero, get the migrants out, British jobs for British people… Nothing about the local area at all. Turkeys and Christmas.

Where are you? The Reform leaflets I posted through letterboxes were all focused on a synopsis of person standing and what they have already done to help local community before becoming a councillor and a pledge to turn up to meetings, and cut out all unnecessary wastes of money.

Can you put a photo of one of these leaflets up please with all the national pledges because I've seen leaflets for 15 different wards and none have these national pledges on.

Peopleshouldhavetails · 08/05/2026 05:26

Nope - our Reform led council have increased our CT by 9% this year 😡

Previous administration left huge 300 million debt after years of mismanagement. 9 percent increase was to avoid bankruptcy.

Talk to most people here and it's all about immigration, look online on comment sections over many many a website and it's about immigration. They blame everything on immigration. Lack of housing, lack of good schools, lack of NHS and more. Sorry, those are the norms. It's not down to immigration is it? No. Is the truth insulting? Not my problem.

One of the issues our town and those around us have is the people being moved here by their councils at risk of making themselves homeless if they refuse.
Some of these people have social care needs for their children, which is a massive expense in a town where resources are already incredibly stretched. I don't know who covers this expense but the perception is that we do.
We don't have the infrastructure to help people to integrate. We don't have the sure start centres, youth clubs etc. What we are is a close knit town that has suffered year on year through lack of opportunities for young people.

People of all colours and nationalities are being moved but it is of course none white people who are the visible face of this in a town whose demographic has changed drastically since 2020. This gets lumps in with immigration. If the relocation up here had been more organic I don't think people would perceive so many issues and the voting might have gone differently.

They got in because the Tories gifted it to them for so many reasons. Not just smash the gangs.

Why do you think Labour is performing so terribly?

A reduction from a huge amount does not mean that the amount of half is right.

Voters believe Starmer has little or no respect for them

Three quarters of voters believe Sir Keir Starmer’s Government has little or no respect for them, a poll has shown.

A survey by More in Common and the UCL Policy Lab, released on the day of the local election results, found 44 per cent of Britons agreed with the statement: “The Government doesn’t respect people like me at all.”

A further 31 per cent said Sir Keir’s administration only “respects people like me a little”.

Half of all voters (50 per cent) described the Labour Government as “chaotic”, nearly twice as many as the number who said the same about the previous Tory administration under Rishi Sunak when prompted to compare the two.
The Prime Minister’s priorities are also seen as out of step with those of the public.

Monty36 · 08/05/2026 11:39

Starmer and Labour completely messed up. A huge majority. What do they do? Lark about getting free dresses, specs, concert tickets. Give the NHS a pay rise but without any agreements to hold them to. Mandelson. Reeves as Chancellor started badly with the Winter fuel allowance and hasn’t recovered since then.
And endless droning on about consulting people. They had years to consult people. To decide what they would do. You don’t get into power and then say we will consult people. Weak and terrified to make decisions is how they come across.

ClaudiaWankleman · 08/05/2026 11:46

Monty36 · 08/05/2026 11:32

A reduction from a huge amount does not mean that the amount of half is right.

But we are talking about actions, not absolute numbers. When you said 'tinkering' you were referring to the actions, not the results. You can't change the goalposts.

There is so much going wrong with our Labour government at the moment I don't think we need to stack up bad faith arguments on top of that. It's disingenuous.

Dweetfidilove · 08/05/2026 11:48

OneTealShaker · 08/05/2026 01:30

I wonder if people who insult voters by calling them stupid ever learn. Clearly didn’t learn from the Brexit vote.

Insulting voters will never win them around to your way of thinking.

Aaaah, Brexit. I learnt a lot from that, and it's one of the primary reasons I couldn't vote Reform.

I won't call Reform voters stupid, but I'll wait to see if they learnt something from Brexit that I missed.
It's going to be a bumpy ride for the next 6 years at least; as I have a feeling they'll bag the next GE too. Looking forward to the amazing things they'll do 👌🏾.
